How can I remove this annoying and possibly dangerous notification from appearing every few seconds? I have a 2015 MacBook Pro running 10.15.7. This happened when I inadvertently clicked on a website that was malicious and now it won't go away. I scanned it with Malwarebytes to no avail and I also have BitDefender and ClamXAV running.  HELP PLEASE😩

These are "notifications" from your browser. Please check your browser notfication settings of all of your browsers.

This will give you an idea of what you are experiencing. Even though this refers to Chrome, many browsers have the issue.

Push notifications feature in Chromium based browsers (which includes MS Edge).  Please see if the instructions in this Malwarebytes Labs article help or not.

Also

Stop seeing requests for permission to send you notifications in Safari: Choose Safari > Preferences, click Websites, then click Notifications. Deselect “Allow ...

Please let us know how it goes and if the issue still persists.

Thanks

Thank you Porthos, This occurs even when my Safari browser is not engaged or quit. It seems to be system wide. Where do I look for it's origin? I don't even want to accidentally click on it triggering some system wide problem. By the way I am using 15.2 version of Safari. I will let you know if that works.

Thanks👌

That's normal. Once you approve that site's being able to send notifications, they can send them whether the browser is running or not.

@Porthos explained that.

That's highly doubtful. I suspect the most that could happen if you click is that your browser would open to a potentially malicious site where you would have to do something else to cause any problem.

If you continue to have issues reporting please send me a PM and let me know.

I think it was because @Porthos was in the process of deleting that post at the same time I attempted to report.

As Porthos mentioned, this looks like a notification that can appear if you give a website the ability to push a notification to your browser. However, there are a couple things that concern me here. With such notifications, I would expect to see 1) the relevant web browser icon, and 2) the domain name of the site sending the notification. I'm not sure whether #2 might have changed recently with a macOS update, but the fact that the notification is showing an icon that looks like System Preferences is weird. Perhaps that's because you're using Safari, but Safari is closed?

Can you open Safari, choose Preferences from the Safari menu, then click the Websites icon in the toolbar of the preferences window. Next, choose Notifications in the scrolling list on the left side of the window. Check all the sites there, and make sure they are all set to Deny (unless you specifically want notifications from a specific site).

Does that solve the problem?

Hello treed. I did solve the problem with the help of Porthos' suggestion by deleting the above notification from Safari's "Websites", "Notifications" list in Safari's Preferences. When it was gone I didn't notice any malfunction anywhere else. I hope that is that 🤨. Yes, Safari was closed when it appeared, go figure! The "(gear wheel) Turn On Your Antivirus, Click Here To Run McAfee" notification  was the one that appeared after clicking on the suspicious web site. But it is gone now with no effect on system. BTW I am running the latest updated 10.15.7.

Again thanks to the Malwarebytes Staff for helping!

I'm glad to hear that's resolved. Be very careful in the future not to allow unknown sites to send you notifications... in fact, it's probably advisable to uncheck the box labeled "Allow websites to ask for permission to send notifications" at the bottom of the window shown in my screenshot above. That will effectively prevent this technique... and, I mean, who wants notifications from websites anyway? It seemed like a good idea at the time, but the reality is quite different from the imagined potential. 😄
