Malicious version of MalwareBytes?

GalenM

Recommended Posts

A person I now believe to be a scammer installed a version of MalwareBytes on my computer. It displays as MalwareBytes Pro.

is it possible that he installed a malicious version that could be a “back door” to my computer.

should I remove this version and install a clean version?

Hello @GalenM and :welcome:

A Pro edition of Malwarebytes for Windows has not existed for many years and a legitimate license would also be required to activate it and call it Pro. If it is an older edition, it is also missing years worth of upgrades, fixes and features. Also, Malwarebytes would not be spelled with a capitalized "B".

The current release edition is version 4.5.0.152 - CU 1.0.1538 and if it has been legitimately activated it is deemed to be "Premium".

Can you please Run Farbar Recovery Scan Tool to gather logs.

Then, please attach (do not paste) the FRST.txt and Addition.txt files that were produced to your next reply and a thorough analysis can be started.

Thank you.

Hello @GalenM

Please gather the following logs for us and we'll review and let you know what we find.

To begin, please do the following so that we may take a closer look at your installation for troubleshooting:

NOTE: The tools and the information obtained are safe and not harmful to your privacy or your computer, please allow the programs to run if blocked by your system.

  • Download the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  • In your Downloads folder, open the mb-support-x.x.x.xxx.exe file
  • In the User Account Control pop-up window, click Yes to continue the installation
  • Run the MBST Support Tool
  • In the left navigation pane of the Malwarebytes Support Tool, click Advanced
  • In the Advanced Options, click Gather Logs. A status diagram displays the tool is Getting logs from your machine
  • A zip file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your desktop, please upload that file on your next reply

Thank you
