esp2022 Posted December 21, 2021 ID:1493972 Share Posted December 21, 2021 I updated malwarebytes and now my computer is totally messed up.Browsers will open but I can't browse because nothing but the home page opens. In Chrome I can't type anything in the search/url field and none of my bookmarks will open. It is like a virus itself has taken over. Opera is the same. In Firefox I can type and click links but no pages will open. Edge won't even open. Local apps on the computer work but it's useless for online work. I went into my control panel and uninstalled Malwarebytes then restarted but that did nothing to help. What can I do?

It was the usual update notification on my desktop. Now I wonder... With all the crazyness around here and Christmas coming I may have been distracted so it could have been different though it seemed to run just the same way as updates usually do. I had Malwarebytes installed so I guess it would have caught it is it contained a virus.

esp2022 Posted December 22, 2021 Author ID:1494096 Share Posted December 22, 2021 Thank you, I will do this once the full scan completes (it's been running for over 9 hours now) - this will be tomorrow. I will have to download the tool onto a memory stick to get it onto the computer in question.
Solution esp2022 Posted December 22, 2021 Author Solution ID:1494175 Share Posted December 22, 2021 The scan found 3 high severity threats: HackTool:Win32/Ketgen BrowserModifier:Win32/Xeelyak SoftwareBundler:Win32/Dlhelper I got those all cleaned out. I think they came from and old Macromedia Flash download that was hiding in an attached storage drive. That file was stored there for a while though and I had no problems until the latest Malwarebytes update. Everything works now so the problem is fixed. Thanks for all your replies.
