Malwarebytes 4.4.10 premium causes a BSOD on Windows 10 when my VPN launches.

The blue screen reports that there is a problem with NETIO.SYS

Resolved by disabling Malwarebytes Real-Time Protection.

I had my VPN set to launch on startup. That was fun...

Please do the following so that we may take a closer look at your installation for troubleshooting:

NOTE: The tools and the information obtained is safe and not harmful to your privacy or your computer, please allow the programs to run if blocked by your system.

  • Download the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  • In your Downloads folder, open the mb-support-x.x.x.xxx.exe file
  • In the User Account Control pop-up window, click Yes to continue the installation
  • Run the MBST Support Tool
  • In the left navigation pane of the Malwarebytes Support Tool, click Advanced
  • In the Advanced Options, click Gather Logs. A status diagram displays the tool is Getting logs from your machine
  • A zip file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your desktop, please upload that file on your next reply

Thanks

Were you using PIA?

That's correct.

I had no luck finding information on the issue by googling the BSOD error.
The issue is resolved for me but imo a fair amount of luck was involved: PIA has been running at startup on my machine for a long time, likewise Malwarebytes has also been installed for a long time. The only change as far as I can tell was the initiation of the premium mode trial for Malwarebytes. The issue began as soon as I rebooted my machine after running Malwarebytes recently.

I'm hoping this information saves a few headaches for anyone searching along similar lines to me in the future.

Be aware that the trial gets reactivated from time to time after full version updates.

I appreciate you letting me know that, thanks.

If I get some free time it's probably not a bad idea to see if I can reliably connect to my VPN's endpoint in a way that doesn't conflict with Malwarebytes.

I uninstalled Malwarebytes and the issue resolved.

Of course that worked. PIA and Malwarebytes are known not to play well together.

Please refer to this support article which lists several known applications which conflict with the Web Protection in Malwarebytes currently, which includes Private Internet Access.

I'm not sure I understand why the issue very suddenly began. Again.

The machine has been rebooted several times without issue, and no recent configuration changes have been made.

Malwarebytes automatic protections were disabled as per the linked support article.

Please create a new log with the support tool

Is there a simple way to remove personal information from the output?

I'd prefer to not post information containing my username / real name and I'm a bit busy to sort through each file looking for instances.

The issue is resolved for me: the system was able to boot after removing Malwarebytes.

Then it seems to be the end of it. Bottom line is you cannot, in you situation use PIA and Malwarebytes. The WEB protection in the trial/paid version is the main conflict with PIA.

The machine was actually running fine & rebooting properly with both PIA + Malwarebytes installed for a while. I have no idea what specifically caused that to no longer be the case today.

Either way, my main concern in posting here is to provide information for anyone who might be in the same situation in the future.

You were in free mode, NO web protection is active. No conflict.

The trial was re- enabled by the new version. Web protection then came on and conflict.

That's not my interpretation of this screenshot. I could be wrong, I'm not an expert on such matters.

I would have guessed that the update re-enabled the real-time features I had previously disabled. If that were the case, perhaps that's the sort of thing that ought to be noted in the support article.

Looking at your screenshot,

Malwarebytes is fully active because of the trial and that is the reason for the conflict and your blue screens.

You can deactivate the Premium Trial. Deactivate Premium Trial in Malwarebytes for Windows

Before you deactivate turn off the trial please turm this off.
