Malwarebytes doesn't install fully and now I can't uninstall it.

Recommended Posts

I just downloaded the free version of malwarebytes from

After double clicking the .exe a progress bar pops up, but the installation doesn't complete, it just disappears without any 'finish' message. The installation seems incomplete but somehow Malwarebytes has been detected by windows 10 as a default browser, and thus the windows defender has been turned off as a result. The thing is the Malwarebytes app doesn't work on my PC, and I can't do anything with it.

When I tried to uninstall it from programs and features it says I don't have the privilege to uninstall it since it requires admin permission. My account is Administrator account, though. And when I tried to access the malwarebytes folder from my program files, it also denies me access, says I need to be an administrator to access. I doubled checked and I'm sure my account is administrator.

Also now my windows defender settings lists Malwarebytes as the default antivirus, but when I click 'open app' it doesn't do anything. The Malwarebytes folder in programs files has 0 bytes and 0 folders in it but I can't access or delete it. I also can't delete malwarebytes from programs and features tool. I also cannot find it on registry.

So did I just install a malware or what's happening here?

I'm sorry the software isn't working properly but we'll do our best to help.

To begin, Please do the following so that we may take a closer look at your installation for troubleshooting:

NOTE: The tools and the information obtained is safe and not harmful to your privacy or your computer, please allow the programs to run if blocked by your system.

  • Download the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  • In your Downloads folder, open the mb-support-x.x.x.xxx.exe file
  • In the User Account Control pop-up window, click Yes to continue the installation
  • Run the MBST Support Tool
  • In the left navigation pane of the Malwarebytes Support Tool, click Advanced
  • In the Advanced Options, click Gather Logs. A status diagram displays the tool is Getting logs from your machine
  • A zip file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your desktop, please upload that file on your next reply
