Possible Malware on my PC

Recommended Posts

Hello Ive attached the required logs to the post. Short story is I dl'd a few games from itch.io as they have a lot of free indie games. I may have gotten some malware from one of the games because shortly afterwards essentially I could not use my mouse. I could move the pointer but the right and left click buttons did not work. I checked to see if it was a hardware issue, tried it on another machine and its not. What I tried that did work: booting into safe mode the mouse operates, selecting safe boot or selective start up in system configuration allowed the mouse to work but with no access to the internet. Finally, I sys restored to a previous date disabled the Logitech Gaming Software then updated the LGS software and the mouse now functions normally. I am just a little suspicious that it happened after using an exe. from the aforementioned site. Everything seems fine but Id like to double check if any one can help. All the requested logs are attached to my post.

Cheers.

I couldn't figure out how to edit my first post so I am replying to add some things I forgot to mention. From what I have read Itch.io is a legit site but sometime malware slips through the cracks. They provide a space for indie developers to upload their games and some of the developers well are unscrupulous. Also, all of the

"Malwarebytes Service service failed to start due to the following error:
Access is denied."

messages are from trying to scan Mbam in safemode. It works on a normal boot. I thought it used to work in safemode but does not seem to want to on my system.

Hello @Farengar

I see you have Panda Dome antivirus installed. That might be causing some of  your issues in your current Event Logs including our program

Please temporarily disable the real-time protection from Panda Dome antivirus and run the following scan.

Let me have you run a different scanner to double-check. I don't expect it to find anything, but no harm in checking.

I would suggest a free scan with the ESET Online Scanner

Go to https://download.eset.com/com/eset/tools/online_scanner/latest/esetonlinescanner.exe

  • It will start a download of "esetonlinescanner.exe"
  • Save the file to your system, such as the Downloads folder, or else to the Desktop.
  • Go to the saved file, and double click it to get it started.
  • When presented with the initial ESET options, click on "Computer Scan".
  • Next, when prompted by Windows, allow it to start by clicking Yes
  • When prompted for scan type, Click on Full scan
  • Look at & tick  ( select )   the radio selection "Enable ESET to detect and quarantine potentially unwanted applications"   and click on the Start scan button.
  • Have patience.  The entire process may take an hour or more. There is an initial update download.
  • There is a progress window display.
  • You should ignore all prompts to get the ESET antivirus software program.   ( e.g. their standard program).   You do not need to buy or get or install anything else.
  • When the scan is completed, if something was found, it will show a screen with the number of detected items.  If so, click the button marked “View detected results”.
  • Click The blue “Save scan log” to save the log.
  • If something was removed and you know it is a false finding, you may click on the blue ”Restore cleaned files”  ( in blue, at the bottom).
  • Press Continue when all done.  You should click to off the offer for “periodic scanning”.

Note: If you do need to do a File Restore from ESET please follow the directions below

[KB2915] Restore files quarantined by the ESET Online Scanner version 3

https://support.eset.com/en/kb2915-restore-files-quarantined-by-the-eset-online-scanner

Thanks

Hello, I ran the Eset online scanner and it quarantined two items one was in the recycle bin and the second was a file in the Panda Dome software both most like like false positives. Ive attached the log.

Also, just for the hell of it I ran the  Microsoft Safety Scanner and it found nothing. Ive attached the log too. If you did not detect anything malicious in all of those logs it probably is a software issue with the Logitech Gaming Software, but I had never experienced anything like that and I have had that software for years. Appreciate the help.

Let's go ahead and do some resets of a couple of the core system programs and clean removal and reinstall of Malwarebytes.

If that does not help we can run a generic clean-up script that is often helpful for many users.

Can you please do the following?

  • Download the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  • In your Downloads folder, open the mb-support-x.x.x.xxx.exe file
  • In the User Account Control pop-up window, click Yes to continue the installation
  • Run the MBST Support Tool
  • In the left navigation pane of the Malwarebytes Support Tool, click Advanced
  • In the Advanced Options, place a checkmark on all of the Repair System entries.
  • Then click on the Repair System button and allow it to run and restart the system.

image.png

After the restart please do the following

  • Run the MBST Support Tool again.
  • In the left navigation pane of the Malwarebytes Support Tool, click Advanced
  • In the Advanced Options, click the CLEAN button and follow the onscreen instructions to reinstall Malwarebytes
  • NOTE: Please have patience as it can take a while to remove and reinstall. The computer will restart to complete

    image.png

After the restart please do the following

  • Run the MBST Support Tool one more time.
  • In the left navigation pane of the Malwarebytes Support Tool, click Advanced
  • In the Advanced Options, click Gather Logs. A status diagram displays the tool is Getting logs from your machine
  • A zip file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to the All Users' desktop, please upload that file on your next reply

Thank you

The initial problem was the left and right mouse buttons were disabled, that I fixed by updating the logitech software and reverting to a system restore point. That was just highly unusual and it coincided with the dl of free game software. Also, I was having trouble running MBAM and that made me suspicious too.

Basically my machine runs fine I just wanted to double check for malware. I have noticed there are less errors in Administrative Events log after some of procedures you had me do. If you think everything looks fine then I trust you. If you suggest some more procedures I am more than willing to do them.

Okay, since we've reinstalled all of the Malwarebytes software and rebuilt WMI please run the following three steps

Please run the following steps and post back the logs as an attachment when ready.
Temporarily disable your antivirus or other security software first. Make sure to turn it back on once the scans are completed.
Temporarily disable Microsoft SmartScreen to download software below if needed. Make sure to turn it back on once the scans are completed.
If you still have trouble downloading the software please click on Reveal Hidden Contents below for examples of how to allow the download.

When downloading with some browsers you may see a different style of screens that may block FRST from downloading. The program is safe and used hundreds of times a week by many users.

STEP 01

  • If you already have Malwarebytes installed then open Malwarebytes and click on the Scan button. It will automatically check for updates and run a Threat Scan.
  • If you don't have Malwarebytes installed yet please download it from here and install it.
  • Once installed then open Malwarebytes and select Scan and let it run.
  • Once the scan is completed make sure you have it quarantine any detections it finds.
  • If no detections were found click on the Save results drop-down, then the Export to TXT  button, and save the file as a Text file to your desktop or other location you can find and attach that log on your next reply.
  • If there were detections then once the quarantine has completed click on the View report button, Then click the Export drop-down, then the Export to TXT  button, and save the file as a Text file to your desktop or other location you can find and attach that log on your next reply.
  • If the computer restarted to quarantine you can access the logs from the Detection History, then the History tab. Highlight the most recent scan and double-click to open it. Then click the Export drop-down, then the Export to TXT  button, and save the file as a Text file to your desktop or other location you can find and attach that log on your next reply.
  • If Malwarebytes won't run then please skip to the next step and let me know in your next reply that the scanner would not run.

STEP 02

Please download AdwCleaner by Malwarebytes and save the file to your Desktop.

  • Double-click to run the program
  • Accept the End User License Agreement.
  • Wait until the database is updated.
  • Click Scan Now.
  • When finished, if items are found please click Quarantine.
  • Your PC should reboot now if any items were found.
  • After reboot, a log file will be opened. Attach or Copy its content into your next reply.

RESTART THE COMPUTER Before running Step 3

STEP 03
Please download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens, click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). If you've, run the tool before you need to place a check mark here each time
  • Please attach the Additions.txt log to your reply as well.
  • On your next reply, you should be attaching frst.txt and additions.txt to your post, every time.

Thanks

Otherwise, the logs are not showing any obvious signs of an infection at this time.

Is there anything else I can assist you with then at this time?

Thank you @Farengar

I did a system restore since the adware scan removed the program AI suite II, its software that came with the motherboard that controls fans monitors heat etc. That being said none of hte three scans we did found anything aside from AI suite II so the restore point was at ~ 6am 12/4 so I assume it did not revert anything we did. That being said I still have the option to revert the restore point if you think that would we wise. I suppose I could just reinstall the AI suite II software. Thoughts?

You should be able to restore from quarantine from within AdwCleaner I believe. But on the other hand you might want to check your motherboard support site and see if they have a newer version and install that. I check for updates to mine every once in a while. Often though I don't run their tools as they rarely offer much benefit once the system is working well.

I was just curious

The system looks to be clean. Is there anything else I can do to assist you at this time?
