Hi!

For a few days now everytime I start or restart my PC, when I open Malwarebytes the new feature called "security advisor" informs me that I have Windows Defender Firewall OFF.

Once I click the button "view details" it opens the Windows Firewall page in windows where I can see that everything is TURNED ON as I've set it like this for ages now. As soon as I close the Firewall page/window, Malwarebytes suddenly tells me I am now protected and everything is OK. Now this is really silly it doesn't detect the firewall as being on. I haven't touched any firewall setting in ages.

Can you please tell me how to fix this bug? I remember there was a repair / uninstall and reinstall tool for Malwarebytes, could you provide me the link to the updated version of this tool? I can't seem to find it. Maybe something is not working properly detecting it in time.

Thanks for helping me out.

Hi,

Thanks for posting in the Malwarebytes for Windows Help forum.

If you are having technical issues with our Windows product, please do the following:

Malwarebytes Support Tool - Advanced Options

This feature is designed for the following reasons:

  • For use when you are on the forums and need to provide logs for assistance
  • For use when you don't need or want to create a ticket with Malwarebytes
  • For use when you want to perform local troubleshooting on your own

How to use the Advanced Options:

Spoiler
  1. Download Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Double-click mb-support-X.X.X.XXXX.exe to run the program
    • You may be prompted by User Account Control (UAC) to allow changes to be made to your computer. Click Yes to consent.
  3. Place a checkmark next to Accept License Agreement and click Next
  4. Navigate to the Advanced tab
  5. The Advanced menu page contains four categories:
    • Gather Logs: Collects troubleshooting information from the computer. As part of this process, Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) is run to perform a complete diagnosis. The information is saved to a file on the Desktop named mbst-grab-results.zip and can be added as an email attachment or uploaded to a forum post to assist with troubleshooting the issue at hand.
    • Clean: Performs an automated uninstallation of all Malwarebytes products installed to the computer and prompts to install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows afterwards. The Premium license key is backed up and reinstated. All user configurations and other data are removed. This process requires a reboot.
    •  Repair System: Includes various system-related repairs in case a Windows service is not functioning correctly that Malwarebytes for Windows is dependent on. It is not recommended to use any Repair System options unless instructed by a Malwarebytes Support agent.
    • Anonymously help the community by providing usage and threat statistics: Unchecking this option will prevent Malwarebytes Support Tool from sending anonymous telemetry data on usage of the program.
  6. To provide logs for review click the Gather Logs button
  7. Upon completion, click OK
  8. A file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your Desktop
  9. Please attach the file in your next reply.
  10. To uninstall all Malwarebytes Products, click the Clean button.
  11. Click the Yes button to proceed.
  12. Save all your work and click OK when you are ready to reboot.
  13. After the reboot, you will have the option to re-install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows.
  14. Select Yes to install Malwarebytes.
  15. Malwarebytes for Windows will open once the installation completes successfully.

Please do the following Uninstall and reinstall using the Malwarebytes Support Tool

Please close all browsers and programs before running the tool. Right click and quit MB from the system tray also.

Hello, I will start the support tool and return with an answer if this fixed it or not. Thank you!

I also noticed some others are reporting the same issue here in this thread, the last post from Friday has exactly same behavior as I have but I am on Windows 10 with all updates installed.

I have used the Malwarebytes Support Tool to clean uninstall Malwarebytes and to reinstall it back.

One problem though, it also prompted me to install Malwarebytes Privacy which I did not pay for ask for without giving me the permission to refuse installing this VPN software.

I do not use VPN at all because it's not really necessary in my situation so after reinstalling Malwarebytes I restarted PC and uninstalled Malwarebytes Privacy and Tunnel Driver afterwards.

I  have checked if the false warning that I am not full protected still shows up after a restart and it is no longer showing up wrongly. It is showing that I am fully protected without telling me to check firewall settings like it was before. That is for now. I will return tomorrow with a reply in case the bug reappears.

Thank you!

Hello @CristianCP thank you for taking the time to report this issue. I can confirm the problem that you've reported regarding the firewall status is a bug that we're aware of. We hope to have this resolved in one of our upcoming updates. Thanks!

Hello!

Good to know that you have identified this bug and a fix is on the way. In the meanwhile, today after that clean install from yesterday the bug showed up again. Same behavior, clicking "view details" then "view settings" makes everything "green" and "fully protected".

Screens so you can see the bug in action from me.

Thanks, looking forward for the fix.

I have the same issue.

After a restart MBAM reports "Careful, you're not fully protected" (clicking "View details" then reports that Windows firewall is off although it's definitely on). If I simply just wait a few minutes without doing anything the message automatically changes to "Great job! You're fully protected" (without opening Windows Firewall).
