Hello @msgdew and :welcome:

An entry in the Windows® Hosts file is preventing Malwarebytes for Windows (MB4) from contacting the Malwarebytes license server.

Please permanently remove the following Windows® %WinDir%\System32\Drivers\Etc\Hosts file entry:

127.0.0.1  keystone.mwbsys.com

Or, you may use the instructions on resetting the Windows® Hosts file that can be found in How to reset the Hosts file back to the default.

When completed, please restart Windows® and resume using MB4. Then, please reply to this topic with that system's status.

Thank you.

Took 2 days but finally got this fixed, seems trying to get MB to work properly was a lot more painful than expected.

That hosts entry is only there on users computers who try to block the Malwarebytes activation server.

Your log showed only one hosts entry.

Hello @msgdew

Please get me some logs and I'll take a deeper look into your issue.

To begin, please do the following so that we may take a closer look at your installation for troubleshooting:

NOTE: The tools and the information obtained are safe and not harmful to your privacy or your computer, please allow the programs to run if blocked by your system.

  • Download the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  • In your Downloads folder, open the mb-support-x.x.x.xxx.exe file
  • In the User Account Control pop-up window, click Yes to continue the installation
  • Run the MBST Support Tool
  • In the left navigation pane of the Malwarebytes Support Tool, click Advanced
  • In the Advanced Options, click Gather Logs. A status diagram displays the tool is Getting logs from your machine
  • A zip file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your desktop, please upload that file on your next reply

Thank you

No problem, thank you for the update @msgdew

A couple of things you can try if the issue does return.

Try a factory reset of your router

How To Reset Your Router
https://setuprouter.com/networking/how-to-reset-your-router/

If that does not help then you can try the following method below

Use our MBST tool to do a System Repair

  • Download the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  • In your Downloads folder, open the mb-support-x.x.x.xxx.exe file
  • In the User Account Control pop-up window, click Yes to continue the installation
  • Run the MBST Support Tool
  • In the left navigation pane of the Malwarebytes Support Tool, click Advanced
  • In the Advanced Options, place a checkmark on all of the Repair System entries.
  • Then click on the Repair System button and allow it to run and restart the system.

After the restart please do the following

  • Run the MBST Support Tool again.
  • In the left navigation pane of the Malwarebytes Support Tool, click Advanced
  • In the Advanced Options, click the CLEAN button and follow the onscreen instructions to reinstall Malwarebytes
  • NOTE: Please have patience as it can take a while to remove and reinstall. The computer will restart to complete

After the restart please do the following

  • Run the MBST Support Tool again.
  • In the left navigation pane of the Malwarebytes Support Tool, click Advanced
  • In the Advanced Options, click Gather Logs. A status diagram displays the tool is Getting logs from your machine
  • A zip file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your desktop, please upload that file on your next reply

Thank you
