Malware bytes deadlock during "scan for updates"

Recommended Posts

Malwarebytes tries to do a scan. It is hung for almost 40 minutes on "scan for updates". Stopping / breakoff /abort controls are not responsive.
This does happen at system startup every time. Slowing the entire computer down to a crawl. Opening a simple text file does takle 60+ seconds when MB is active.
With MB not started opening any file is instant.
Now it's updateing 45 minutes. A few days ago a complete scan did take 1 minute 50 seconds.

Hello @Callahan

Please try the following and let us know if it resolves your issue or not

Can you please do the following?

  • Download the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  • In your Downloads folder, open the mb-support-x.x.x.xxx.exe file
  • In the User Account Control pop-up window, click Yes to continue the installation
  • Run the MBST Support Tool
  • In the left navigation pane of the Malwarebytes Support Tool, click Advanced
  • In the Advanced Options, click the CLEAN button and follow the onscreen instructions to reinstall Malwarebytes
  • NOTE: Please have patience as it can take a while to remove and reinstall. The computer will restart to complete

After the restart please do the following

  • Run the MBST Support Tool
  • In the left navigation pane of the Malwarebytes Support Tool, click Advanced
  • In the Advanced Options, click Gather Logs. A status diagram displays the tool is Getting logs from your machine
  • A zip file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your desktop, please upload that file on your next reply

Thank you

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks for your answer, and sorry for the late response. My computer was horribly slow the past few days.
The entire issue seems to have been caused by Win 10 updates. This is a fresh install on an aging system, and it seems the DL and installing of all the required updates did somehow disrupt Malwarebytes to an extent it would deadlock the system.
Now the Win 10 downloads have stopped and Malwarebytes works perfectly again.
