Install/Run MB in safe mode?

Recommended Posts

I just Googled amazon and clicked the first link that came up. The browser opened to a window showing a big warning about identity theft, and a stilted voice told me to call the Microsoft support number on my screen. I shut the computer down using task manager.

I'd like to start it the computer in safe mode and run Malwarebytes. I'm not actually sure I have it installed. If it turn out it is not installed is it possible to run it from a flash drive or install it while I'm in safe mode?

On a side note I believe a pay for an MB subscription for 4 computers. Is it possible to find out how many I have installed, and what computer they are on?

Hi,

Thanks for posting in the Malwarebytes for Windows Help forum.

If you are having technical issues with our Windows product, please do the following:

Malwarebytes Support Tool - Advanced Options

This feature is designed for the following reasons:

  • For use when you are on the forums and need to provide logs for assistance
  • For use when you don't need or want to create a ticket with Malwarebytes
  • For use when you want to perform local troubleshooting on your own

How to use the Advanced Options:

Spoiler
  1. Download Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Double-click mb-support-X.X.X.XXXX.exe to run the program
    • You may be prompted by User Account Control (UAC) to allow changes to be made to your computer. Click Yes to consent.
  3. Place a checkmark next to Accept License Agreement and click Next
  4. Navigate to the Advanced tab
  5. The Advanced menu page contains four categories:
    • Gather Logs: Collects troubleshooting information from the computer. As part of this process, Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) is run to perform a complete diagnosis. The information is saved to a file on the Desktop named mbst-grab-results.zip and can be added as an email attachment or uploaded to a forum post to assist with troubleshooting the issue at hand.
    • Clean: Performs an automated uninstallation of all Malwarebytes products installed to the computer and prompts to install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows afterwards. The Premium license key is backed up and reinstated. All user configurations and other data are removed. This process requires a reboot.
    •  Repair System: Includes various system-related repairs in case a Windows service is not functioning correctly that Malwarebytes for Windows is dependent on. It is not recommended to use any Repair System options unless instructed by a Malwarebytes Support agent.
    • Anonymously help the community by providing usage and threat statistics: Unchecking this option will prevent Malwarebytes Support Tool from sending anonymous telemetry data on usage of the program.
  6. To provide logs for review click the Gather Logs button
  7. Upon completion, click OK
  8. A file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your Desktop
  9. Please attach the file in your next reply.
  10. To uninstall all Malwarebytes Products, click the Clean button.
  11. Click the Yes button to proceed.
  12. Save all your work and click OK when you are ready to reboot.
  13. After the reboot, you will have the option to re-install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows.
  14. Select Yes to install Malwarebytes.
  15. Malwarebytes for Windows will open once the installation completes successfully.

This can be avoided by using both Malwarebytes Browser Guard and Ublock origin in your browser.

Not needed, Those warnings are just a form of advertisements that redirect you to that scam page. As long as you do not follow the instructions and call the provided number and let the scammer remotely access your computer you are fine.

Thanks Porthos!

I thought it was probably just the Website trying to phish for personal info., or get me to allow remote desktop access.  I guess I'll just boot normally and check if MB is properly installed.

It took a bit for me to figure out how to get back into my account. It looks like I have 2 of 4 premium subscriptions I haven't been using.  I may have forgotten to reinstall MB when I changed the system drive on my gamming PC a few months ago.

I haven't had any virus or malware issues for years. It looks like MB includes anti-virus now. I've always used another AV program along with MB.  Is it alright to use Malwarebytes Premium for both anti-virus and anti-malware?

This is what it wanted. Be sure to when opening the browser to choose to start a new session not restore session.

Also consider my advice here

If Windows 10, I use it along with Windows Security (Defender). To enable Defender to work alongside MB you need to change the following setting to off.

I was"t about to restore the page I was on. I cleared that when I shut the computer down. Guess I should have mentioned that.

Malewarebytes was installed, but it was an older version. It ran but didn't show any problems. I updated it and installed Browser Guard, and Ublock. I just ran another scan. It also came up clean.

This is an old computer. When Win 10 came out their were issues with game comparability. So I went with win 7. I ran Norton, provided by Comcast until comcast said they installed a firewall in the router that made AV software unnecessary. I installed Avast with MB, and planned to do the win 10 upgrade. I just keep putting it off. It's definitely time.

Please  refer to this support article which lists several known applications which conflict with the Web Protection in Malwarebytes currently, which includes Avast.

I haven't had any of the issues mentioned. Thanks for the info.

I bought a Win 10 License Key a while back. I plan to install that this weekend.

The upgrade to windows 10 from 7 is still free.

I had heard that but I could never get it to install. I finally worked through all the update issues today. You are right it never asked for the license key. Oh well, I'm due to build another computer soon. Maybe I'll use it then.

Though I can get Windows 10 to work I too have purchased licenses before so that I can run the Pro version without any hassle. Not knowing if or when Microsoft might make it possible that you can't install and activate.

For all I know in a week or two it may ask me for a license key. With the windows media creation tool running from my Win 7 Pro system disk M.2 SSD it automatically installed Win 10 Pro without a key. It is working for now.

My difficulties were probably due to registry issues. As I said I have tried to upgrade several times. Originally I didn't have the disc space on my 512GB ssd.  I moved as much as I could to a standard SSD.  Some of the programs didn't allow me to select an install directory so I ended up moving them manually and reconnecting the start menu items. The programs worked. No guarantees I didn't mess up the registry. Eventually I swapped my 512GB Plextor SSD for a 1TB Samsung. I had all kinds of trouble cloning the old drive onto the new one, and getting it to boot. I've heard there issues with windows licenses and changing hardware.

Sorry that got so long winded. I just wanted to give some background.

What finally worked for me was uninstalling Avast, uninstalling Visual Studio, turning off all the non-Microsoft services, and deleting the old $Windows.-WS from the previous install.

The computer is basically working. My web cam isn't recognized. I have a directory I don't think I need on my C drive, that has Windows6.1-KB2685811-x64.cab in it . I know there will be a few more issues to work through. I can handle that. This forum is about getting Malwarebytes working so I don't want to take up any more of you time.

Thank you for all of your help!

If you need further help please post some logs @Droidling

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system.
You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply as well.

Thank you
