whatsapp malware on iOS

today for the first time i received a scam whatsapp message on my iphone. The message was text only and contained no links. I tried blocking without opening the conversation but the conversation opened anyway. I did not click on anything but checked the profile photo. 

is it possible to be infected with anything just by opening the message or can it just be ignored? i have never received a message such as this before.

Thanks for your help and advice Nathan. I have archived the chat - i can leave it alone? It's not possible for the message to do any harm without me interacting with it any further? like i said i opened the conversation to read the message but certainly did not click on anything.

Will do. But just to confirm: it is not possible to infect my iphone with malware by simply receiving a whatsapp text message?

No.  Not unless you clicked a link and explicitly accepted to install something.  Even then, Apple is so locked down, your phone would also need to be "jailbroken".
