How about posting in all of your communications channels,  a tip sheet explaining how to use Malwarebytes to ensure that a desirable downloadable program on a website, is going to be safe to download and subsequently run? For example,

  • Is it safe to even click on the download link? Couldn’t the link itself trigger installation of malware?
  • As the installer downloads, or after it has downloaded, does MWB automatically scan it for malware?
  • Some such downloads are merely utility .exe programs that, in turn, trigger a second download of the actual program installer package. Does MWB ensure that both the utility.exe and the final installer package, are free of malware?
  • After the program is installed, should the user again run a MWB scan on it, and/or scan their entire computer, to detect any malware that may have been installed during the ‘install’?
  • Does MWB recommend rebooting and rerunning MWB scans during the installation stages?  i.e.,
    • Should the user reboot and rerun a MWB scan after downloading the utility.exe installer?
    • Should they reboot again and rerun a MWB scan after running the utililty.exe installer

  • There is no way any program would have that knowledge. There are over 6 billion indexed web pages on the Internet with links and programs by the millions changing every day.
  • As the installer downloads, or after it has downloaded, does MWB automatically scan it for malware?
  • We do scan for some known bad programs but any time you download software you're not certain of you should scan it with Malwarebytes and if really concerned upload it to https://virustotal.com and have them scan it.
  • Some such downloads are merely utility .exe programs that, in turn, trigger a second download of the actual program installer package. Does MWB ensure that both the utility.exe and the final installer package, are free of malware?
  • What the program is has little relevance to the potential threat and as above all downloaded files should be scanned manually as well and if still concerned also scan online at VirusTotal
  • After the program is installed, should the user again run a MWB scan on it, and/or scan their entire computer, to detect any malware that may have been installed during the ‘install’?
  • If you're using the paid version with real-time protection then Malwarebytes will do a scan during the installation and should not require one after the install in most cases. If using the Free version then yes you should scan after install as well.
  • Does MWB recommend rebooting and rerunning MWB scans during the installation stages?  i.e., No, rebooting after an install could potentially allow an infection or rootkit to get installed. Scans should be done before any reboot
    • Should the user reboot and rerun a MWB scan after downloading the utility.exe installer? See above. No, do not reboot until after scanning
    • Should they reboot again and rerun a MWB scan after running the utililty.exe installer  See above. No, do not reboot until after scanning

You should always be alert and aware of downloading any program as there can always be a risk of possible infection or threat.

You can review the following for tips to help prevent infection

Thank you
