Malware protection high disk usage spikes

Recommended Posts

Fully updated Malwarebytes on Windows 10 21H1 (also fully updated) and I am seeing Malware Protection cause big cpu spikes but only on machines with hard disk drives (hdd), anyone else see this?  Seen it on a desktop and laptop

Will try to create a ticket from one of the relatives machines that is seeing it (the machine slows to a crawl when the bug hits, so grabbing logs could take a few hours, the prompt to enter a pin can take 6 minutes to show after a cold boot).  Wondered if anyone has already create a ticket or has found what is triggering the disk usage spike.

Hi,

Thanks for posting in the Malwarebytes for Windows Help forum.

If you are having technical issues with our Windows product, please do the following:

Malwarebytes Support Tool - Advanced Options

This feature is designed for the following reasons:

  • For use when you are on the forums and need to provide logs for assistance
  • For use when you don't need or want to create a ticket with Malwarebytes
  • For use when you want to perform local troubleshooting on your own

How to use the Advanced Options:

Spoiler
  1. Download Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Double-click mb-support-X.X.X.XXXX.exe to run the program
    • You may be prompted by User Account Control (UAC) to allow changes to be made to your computer. Click Yes to consent.
  3. Place a checkmark next to Accept License Agreement and click Next
  4. Navigate to the Advanced tab
  5. The Advanced menu page contains four categories:
    • Gather Logs: Collects troubleshooting information from the computer. As part of this process, Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) is run to perform a complete diagnosis. The information is saved to a file on the Desktop named mbst-grab-results.zip and can be added as an email attachment or uploaded to a forum post to assist with troubleshooting the issue at hand.
    • Clean: Performs an automated uninstallation of all Malwarebytes products installed to the computer and prompts to install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows afterwards. The Premium license key is backed up and reinstated. All user configurations and other data are removed. This process requires a reboot.
    •  Repair System: Includes various system-related repairs in case a Windows service is not functioning correctly that Malwarebytes for Windows is dependent on. It is not recommended to use any Repair System options unless instructed by a Malwarebytes Support agent.
    • Anonymously help the community by providing usage and threat statistics: Unchecking this option will prevent Malwarebytes Support Tool from sending anonymous telemetry data on usage of the program.
  6. To provide logs for review click the Gather Logs button
  7. Upon completion, click OK
  8. A file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your Desktop
  9. Please attach the file in your next reply.
  10. To uninstall all Malwarebytes Products, click the Clean button.
  11. Click the Yes button to proceed.
  12. Save all your work and click OK when you are ready to reboot.
  13. After the reboot, you will have the option to re-install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows.
  14. Select Yes to install Malwarebytes.
  15. Malwarebytes for Windows will open once the installation completes successfully.

Even the tool is spiking disk usage (around 20MB/s sometimes), watching it via activity monitor. Here are the logs attached.  From what I can tell one of the recent Malwarebytes updates caused the Malware Protection disk usage spike (already had August 2021 updates ready to install and did the restart of after the logs were grabbed).

I would also consider upgrading to an SSD as well. It would help with the high disk usage during Windows updates.

"This computer is pending a restart."  I know I stated that when I mentioned the pending update for August 2021 updates.  The disk spikes have been going on for more than a month.  The disk usage spikes are 89% from Malware Protection in Malwarebytes (Microsoft Defender is not having the same kind of spikes).  I think they first started back in June or April 2021 (on 2 different machines I help people with).  The Malwarebytes updates did not require a restart (unless a bug in the updater missed that for the pending file renaming).

Malwarebytes 4.4.4.126 (update package 1.0.44113  component package 1.0.1413)

The other part is nothing anyone can fix here is the NTFS file system is buggy with disk fragmentation (the bug is around 20 years old and is NTFS), not sure when the switch to ReFS will happen for desktop Windows.  The fragmentation even hits SSDs (not as bad as HDDs but still can cause hangs and slow downs).

Grabbing logs again (doing a Quick Assist with one of the machines (Microsoft assumes all users have SSDs as it timed out waiting on the updates that had a cleaning up stage this time, so it timed out))

There are no other pending restarts, that is just Edge (already updated it (it does not require a computer restart)) also Edge on Windows 10 is x64 so those are old left overs Microsoft has not cleaned up, and the other is a strange bug I noticed (already ran the Flash Player removal tool months ago but some reason the Flash Player update service was still installed.  As I mentioned this is seen on more than one machine and seen it for months.  What I noticed in testing is turning off the Malware Protection the disk usage spikes by Malwarebytes stopped (the disk usage spikes caused the entire system to slow down).

Pending file changes are done by restarts.

How does that have anything to do with the bug reproducing for months on 2 different machines?  The machine has been restarted 10+ times since the bug was first noticed.  So that pending restart has nothing to due with this bug and that might just be a Microsoft bug with them updating Edge (it has been x64 bit for a few years so those would be a Microsoft bug that is a few years old where it is not cleaning out the old x86 temp).  The Malwarebytes bug is so bad the machines become unusable (as disk usage is 100% for 15 to 20+ minutes)

Hello @Chas4

Let's see if doing a bit of clean up work helps correct the issue for you.

Please go to Control Panel, Programs, Programs and Features and uninstall the following

Bonjour

Then restart the computer.

As you can see, your system is experiencing multiple faults. Hopefully some clean up work can correct many or most of these issues.

Description:

I'd like to have you do the following generic clean-up.

Please download the attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop or location where you ran FRST from.
NOTE. It's important that both files, FRST or FRST64, and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

Please make sure you disable any real time antivirus or security software before running this script. Once completed make sure you re-enable it.

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on this particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system that cannot be undone.

Run FRST or FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.
If the tool needs a restart please make sure you let the system restart normally and let the tool complete its run after restart.
The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt) or wherever you ran FRST from. Please attach or post it to your next reply.

Note: If the tool warned you about an outdated version please download and run the updated version.

NOTE-1:  This fix will run a scan to check that all Microsoft operating system files are valid and not corrupt and attempt to correct any invalid files. It will also run a disk check on the restart to ensure disk integrity. Depending on the speed of your computer this fix may take 30 minutes or more.

NOTE-2: As part of this fix all temporary files will be removed. If you have any open web pages that have not been bookmarked please make sure you bookmark them now as all open applications will be automatically closed. Also, make sure you know the passwords for all websites as cookies will also be removed. The use of an external password manager is highly recommended instead of using your browser to store passwords.

NOTE-3: As part of this fix the network will be reset to defaults as well as the firewall will be reset to defaults

The following directories are emptied:

  • Windows Temp
  • Users Temp folders
  • Edge, IE, FF, Chrome and Opera caches, HTML5 storages, Cookies and History
  • Recently opened files cache
  • Flash Player cache
  • Java cache
  • Steam HTML cache
  • Explorer thumbnail and icon cache
  • BITS transfer queue (qmgr*.dat files)
  • Recycle Bin

Important: items are permanently deleted. They are not moved to quarantine. If you have any questions or concerns please ask before running this fix.

The system will be rebooted after the fix has run.

fixlist.txt

After doing the cleanup above then I'd like to do a clean removal and reinstall of Malwarebytes.

Can you please do the following?

  • Download the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  • In your Downloads folder, open the mb-support-x.x.x.xxx.exe file
  • In the User Account Control pop-up window, click Yes to continue the installation
  • Run the MBST Support Tool
  • In the left navigation pane of the Malwarebytes Support Tool, click Advanced
  • In the Advanced Options, click the CLEAN button and follow the onscreen instructions to reinstall Malwarebytes
  • NOTE: Please have patience as it can take a while to remove and reinstall. The computer will restart to complete

After the restart please do the following

  • Run the MBST Support Tool
  • In the left navigation pane of the Malwarebytes Support Tool, click Advanced
  • In the Advanced Options, click Gather Logs. A status diagram displays the tool is Getting logs from your machine
  • A zip file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your desktop, please upload that file on your next reply

Thank you

@AdvancedSetup Not sure why the Open Source code from Apple that HP (BMW also use in their software for programing the cars) for printers & scanners would cause issues as on has been on the machine longer than Malwarebytes.  The disk usage spikes have been in the last few versions of Malwarebytes.

6 hours ago, AdvancedSetup said:

That looks to be the built in search indexer for Windows, the Edge hang was due to Malwarebytes disk usage spike (all other programs near a crawl).   The Microsoft Store app has had the same bug as the settings with it having silent crashes for 6 years (since pre RTM builds of Windows 10).  The Google Drive error means Google f*cked up their Windows client badly as they killed off the back and sync client and started Drive again (that install is barley a few weeks old).

Looks like you found a security bug in Google's software (that is the crash handler for Chromium based apps including Google Drive).

Everything on the computers (one is a laptop another is a desktop and both the culprit for the system hangs is Malwarebytes Malware Protection disk usage spikes no way to grab logs during the spike as Malware Protection has a very high priority)  grind to a halt when Malwarebytes Malware Protection Disk usage spikes and that also causes errors. (I tried a disable of the Malware Protection and the computer returned to normal which points to a bug in Malware Protect (most likely on machines with HDD drives).  Also Windows Defender Was renamed Microsoft Defender a while back.

This is also  bug in Windows 10 since pre RTM builds as Microsoft Update and Microsoft Defender might try to update the same file at the same time without checking to see if the definitions are being updated (the updater is kinda slow and does have a slight CPU spike).

This below (since the editor is glitchy with the quotes) might be from a Microsoft Update bug, from what I can tell aepic.dll is a Windows System file.

The Adobe Acrobat Update Service service terminated unexpectedly  <-- I killed the process as there was no update for Adobe that day and I was trying to free up resources for the machine to do the monthly updates (.net takes a while to install, and NTFS has a 20+ year old bug with disk fragmentation and it causing all sorts of performance issues even on SSDs (I have seen it)).

What do the logs say about Malwarebytes itself or was it not able to pull any logs due to the disk usage bug in Malwarebytes (both Malwarebytes and Windows are fully updated)?

I'm not blaming any specific item or feature. I'm trying to help you clean up the computer in general. If you're not interested then that's okay, at the very least try using the Clean Removal and reinstall of our program, though I doubt that will help you all that much but who knows, it might.

As for if it's an issue due to a mechanical hard drive I might consider it if your logs were clean but with that many errors I wouldn't. I'd clean up the errors first. I'll mention it to our QA team and see what they have to say, as for myself I've not used a mechanical drive for Windows in probably at least 8 years and I don't think it's even possible in the past 3 years to buy a computer online that comes with a mechanical drive unless you hunt it down or go really bargain basement shopping. The mechanical drive today has been relegated to data storage not the main Windows drive. Point being I personally have access to several systems, but none of them use a mechanical drive so I'd have to check with QA.

Thank you

@AdvancedSetup It is still very easy to buy a Windows machine with a HDD (they cost less than SSDs), rather than online where you have to pay for shipping and other things you can go into a store (if there is one nearby).  I am not sure which version of Malwarebytes the Malware Protection bug hit with the disk usage spike (another machine I seen it on has not been on much at all in the past few months but I saw the same lock ups (both machines Malwarebytes is sharing the anonymous feedback.  The errors are to be expected on about every Windows 10 machine (Windows 10 has a lot of the same bugs for over 6 years, I am one of the founding members of the Windows Insider program so I saw some of the same bugs back in the pre RTM builds, yes I did send feedback in the Feedback Hub).  When you are trying to get updates to install and there is a resource issue, I try to kill some processes that are not going to be needed to free up disk usage availability or ones I know will not be grabbing any updates to free if resources and not interfere.  Have the team contact Google about their security lapses with the current version of Google Drive on that file that is not signed right.  Some others like the Garmin Express is just a bug in the updater (it still updates fine just).

I'm not disputing if you have the issue or not. All I can do is report it to QA. I see no other posts from other users having the same issue. Have you seen any posted in the past few months you can share?

I have no mechanical drives period as I explained. I've replaced mine not quite but nearly a decade ago.

I have no way to test your idea or feedback myself so I will report it

Thank you again

Malwarebytes for Windows 4.4.5 might have fixed it (tho a strange bug during the installer is that it knocked off (the device could not connect to anything on the internet) network connections for the device until after the required reboot).
