Virus created issue where all apps forgot their directories.

Recommended Posts

Ok so I got a virus, I believe I fixed it, and if required I can do more scans and show the logs. However, the virus seems to have completely removed the directories of many apps. They are all still there in program files, but most of them just seem to not remember what to do. Scratch that, I just checked once more and it seems more like the program files were moved or something, because I cant seem to find the folder cotaining the executable app itself. I dont have malwerabytes premium But I do have Mcaffeee and it keeps saying a new virus has been stopped every 2 to 3 minutes, with a similar name called vguuu.exe suggesting that it is redownloading itself. So if anyone can provide assistance that would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, sounds good. Just let it run and remove what it finds. Then post back the log and I'll check back with you in a little while

Here are the logs, however it Is getting pretty late in my time zone so I might hit the hay for a while so if you post the next step I can do it tomorrow morning, and you don't need to wait for me. I thank you in advance for helping me I have found it reassuring that this community is one of the most helpful people I've ever met.

Log looks good. Let me have you run the following when you can and I'll take a look at the new logs when you do post them.

If possible run from Normal Mode.

Please run the following steps and post back the logs as an attachment when ready.
Temporarily disable your antivirus or other security software first. Make sure to turn it back on once the scans are completed.
Temporarily disable Microsoft SmartScreen to download the software below if needed. Make sure to turn it back on once the scans are completed.
If you still have trouble downloading the software please click on Reveal Hidden Contents below for examples of how to allow the download.

When downloading with some browsers you may see a different style of screens that may block FRST from downloading. The program is safe and used hundreds of times a week by many users.

  • If no detections were found click on the Save results drop-down, then the Export to TXT  button, and save the file as a Text file to your desktop or other location you can find and attach that log on your next reply.
  • If there were detections then once the quarantine has completed click on the View report button, Then click the Export drop-down, then the Export to TXT  button, and save the file as a Text file to your desktop or other location you can find and attach that log on your next reply.

Then click the Export drop-down, then the Export to TXT  button, and save the file as a Text file to your desktop or other location you can find and attach that log on your next reply.

Also another thing I noticed is that the applications are all still there, its just that most of my applications have turned into .REQG files making them no longer an .EXE file so thats why its not working properly, and renaming it back to .exe doesnt change it into an application file either.

It's is very possible that they may have remote access

I have not studied that specific one as it's new but my guess is that you're correct. At this time you will not be able to recover your data.

Probably the best, safest thing to do is reinstall Windows but make sure you remove the current partition as a format alone could potentially leave an onboard attack, rare these days but was common years ago.

If you do have important data you want to try to recover then set the hard driver aside in the hopes that someday in the future  a key may be released.

Greg has an excellent article on doing a clean install of Windows. I don't agree with him about keeping, using an Online Account but that is my own personal preference. I don't share any data with any other accounts, or computers and I don't sync data, etc. I want my computer 100% standalone as possible and I'll deal with any issues or concerns about keeping data in sync for use elsewhere.

After the clean install please see the following with information to help you better protect your system. Using imaging backup software to an external USB drive is also highly suggested. Had you done that already you'd be able to restore back in a few minutes.

Ok I reset my computer, and you can close this forum now. I tried to put some unaffected apps in appdata in a usb to transfer, however I guess they deleted everything in that as well. My computers working fine now, but I lost everything, I guess I now know to be more careful Thank you for your time.

Not such much a matter of only being careful. Backing up your data is very important, as you can now see. If it had been backed up properly you could have recovered from this mess within minutes almost as though nothing happened.

I'll go ahead and close your topic then and wish you well. Note, a Reset is not even close to the same as doing a Clean install but the choice is yours.

Take care and stay safe out there

Cheers
