Svchost.exe with Parent Process MsMpEng.exe

I've noticed Process Create alerts from Sysmon for c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe with a parent process of C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Platform\4.18.2105.4-0\MsMpEng.exe. Initial research leads me to believe this could  be malicious. I ran a Malwarebytes  scan but it did not detect any threats. Can someone please review and let me know if this is worth investigating further?

 The Microsoft Safety Scanner is a free Microsoft stand-alone virus scanner that can be used to scan for & remove malware or potentially unwanted software from a system. 

  • The download links & the how-to-run-the tool are at this link at Microsoft 



  • Select "FULL " scan from scan options.

Let me know the result of this.

Hi Maurice, here's the results of the scan. It looks like no infection was found which is great. However, I do recall there being several threats found throughout the scan - last time I checked there were 4. Is that something I need to look into, or not?

Thanks very much for the Safety Scanner log. That is a excellent result.

But anyhow, later on, I will lead you thru a manual run of Microsoft Defender.  At this point here, I am providing a custom script to be run with the FRST64  tool.

The main goal of this script is to remove a Task that calls a powershell script called WACInstall  that is odd-looking in that it is in a TEMP sub-folder.


NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on this particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system that cannot be undone.

Please download the attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the D:  Downloads folder



NOTE. It's important that both files,  FRST64, and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.



Run FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.

If the tool needs a restart please make sure you let the system restart normally and let the tool complete its run after restart.

The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt) or wherever you ran FRST from. Please attach or post it to your next reply.


Note: If the tool warned you about an outdated version please download and run the updated version.


NOTE-1: This fix will run a scan to check that all Microsoft operating system files are valid and not corrupt and attempt to correct any invalid files.   It will re-enable Microsoft Defender.

Depending on the speed of your computer this fix may take 30 minutes or more.


NOTE-2: As part of this fix all temporary files will be removed. If you have any open web pages that have not been bookmarked please make sure you bookmark them now as all open applications will be automatically closed. Also, make sure you know the passwords for all websites as cookies will also be removed. The use of an external password manager is highly recommended instead of using your browser to store passwords.


The following directories are emptied:

  • Windows Temp
  • Users Temp folders
  • Edge, IE, FF, Chrome and Opera caches, HTML5 storages, Cookies and History
  • Recently opened files cache
  • Flash Player cache
  • Java cache
  • Steam HTML cache
  • Explorer thumbnail and icon cache
  • BITS transfer queue (qmgr*.dat files)
  • Recycle Bin

Important: items are permanently deleted. They are not moved to quarantine. If you have any questions or concerns please ask before running this fix.


The system will be rebooted after the fix has run.

Kindly attach Fixlog.txt with next reply.   Plus, provide me a good idea as to Hos is this system.

I would like to suggest that you do a manual scan with Microsoft Defender antivirus.

From the Start menu, select Settings, then select Update and Security.

Next, look at the left-side menu & select Windows Security



Next, In Windows Security section:  Click on the grey button Open Windows Security




Now, click on the shield Virus and threat protection

By the way, when you see a green check-mark on your display, it means a good status  and that  protection is on.





 On the next display,  look at all the options.   Look down the list and see "Check for Updates" which I have highlighted with a blue icon.

You can click on that to have the system check for updates for Windows Defender.

Please also note that the Scan options (all) can be displayed by clicking on Scan options.  ( You can do Quick, Full, or Custom).
