Now MBAM wants a microsoft security update

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have been a customer of MBAM since before July 2015 when I saw a need to get/pay for the Real Time Security protection. It has worked flawlessly, a couple hiccups over the years but that was resolved quickly. Great Job!

I got MBAM/Malwarebytes and kicked microsoft security farce to the curb. Now MBAM wants a microsoft security update in order to update Malwarebytes after years without without microsoft updates. Please...Forget that!!!

Will the ' Malwarebytes Legacy download' give complete Win 7 protection without Microsoft ?

Are the definitions going to Consistently be complete like it has been, crushing ransomware and other viruses ?

Thanks

Spoiler
  1. Download Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Double-click mb-support-X.X.X.XXXX.exe to run the program
    • You may be prompted by User Account Control (UAC) to allow changes to be made to your computer. Click Yes to consent.

  4. Navigate to the Advanced tab
  5. The Advanced menu page contains four categories:
    • Gather Logs: Collects troubleshooting information from the computer. As part of this process, Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) is run to perform a complete diagnosis. The information is saved to a file on the Desktop named mbst-grab-results.zip and can be added as an email attachment or uploaded to a forum post to assist with troubleshooting the issue at hand.
    • Clean: Performs an automated uninstallation of all Malwarebytes products installed to the computer and prompts to install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows afterwards. The Premium license key is backed up and reinstated. All user configurations and other data are removed. This process requires a reboot.
    •  Repair System: Includes various system-related repairs in case a Windows service is not functioning correctly that Malwarebytes for Windows is dependent on. It is not recommended to use any Repair System options unless instructed by a Malwarebytes Support agent.
    • Anonymously help the community by providing usage and threat statistics: Unchecking this option will prevent Malwarebytes Support Tool from sending anonymous telemetry data on usage of the program.
  6. To provide logs for review click the Gather Logs button
  7. Upon completion, click OK
  8. A file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your Desktop
  9. Please attach the file in your next reply.
  10. To uninstall all Malwarebytes Products, click the Clean button.
  11. Click the Yes button to proceed.
  12. Save all your work and click OK when you are ready to reboot.
  13. After the reboot, you will have the option to re-install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows.
  14. Select Yes to install Malwarebytes.
  15. Malwarebytes for Windows will open once the installation completes successfully.

I refuse to tinker with code to complete Malwarebytes security.

Does Malwarebytes have plans to fix this to be complete for windows 7 ?

or is their complete windows 7 support dead ?

Thanks

As long as you update Win 7 fully you can still receive program and feature enhancements.

Windows 2019-09 Security Update for Windows devices running Malwarebytes home products <<<<<<This is the issue you have as of now.

All future versions will never be compatible with your system as it is. The following section is the big part. Most software developers will have to comply with  TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 standards.

Give Windows 7 time and it will be as unusable as Win 98 Windows XP in the future.

Quote

Enable TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 (applies to both x86 and x64)

Update to enable TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 as default secure protocols in WinHTTP in Windows
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3140245/update-to-enable-tls-1-1-and-tls-1-2-as-default-secure-protocols-in-wi

Download the following MSI installer to add the DefaultSecureProtocols registry subkey automatically which is required for the TLS 1.1 TLS 1.2 update
https://download.microsoft.com/download/0/6/5/0658B1A7-6D2E-474F-BC2C-D69E5B9E9A68/MicrosoftEasyFix51044.msi

You can manually create the Registry entries if the MSI file is not available. Copy the following code to NOTEPAD and save it as a .REG file.
You will need to place the file Save-As name in quotes to create a .REG file instead of a .TXT file such as:  "enable_TLS.reg"

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\TLS 1.1\Client]
"DisabledByDefault"=dword:00000000
"Enabled"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\TLS 1.2\Client]
"DisabledByDefault"=dword:00000000
"Enabled"=dword:00000001

After you've updated the Registry entry you can then install these updates

The files for the actual Update to enable TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 from the article above

Malwarebytes is committed to continue support for Windows 7 for as long as Microsoft allows us to. This stand means that we'll continue offering our core anti-malware protection to the best of our ability, given technical limitations.

Hello @murph

Even if Malwarebytes was up and running with the latest version it is not designed to protect you against internal code exploits of the operating system. That is what Microsoft does for many years is update their operating system for exploits and bugs.

You can still typically install Windows 10 for free on many older systems and then it is covered by Microsoft and would work with current new software as well

We did not make this SHA-2 requirement. Microsoft and other big vendors like Google decided that the older security ciphers were too weak and dangerous for the computer to continue to use and this now requires at least two updates.
We provide a link for that update which should be quick and easy but we also provide instructions to update Windows 7 as far as it can be before Microsoft stopped supporting it, you don't need to do the full set but many have done it.

Our main article about this issue is here

Windows 2019-09 Security Update for Windows devices running Malwarebytes home products
https://support.malwarebytes.com/hc/en-us/articles/1500004670861

The link in our article points out this update from Microsoft - you need to install both updates. Below are links for both x86 32-bit and x64 64-bit depending on if you're using Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system.
You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

STEP 1

2019-09 Security Update for Windows 7 for x86-based Systems (KB4474419)
http://download.windowsupdate.com/c/msdownload/update/software/secu/2019/09/windows6.1-kb4474419-v3-x86_0f687d50402790f340087c576886501b3223bec6.msu

2019-09 Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4474419)
http://download.windowsupdate.com/c/msdownload/update/software/secu/2019/09/windows6.1-kb4474419-v3-x64_b5614c6cea5cb4e198717789633dca16308ef79c.msu

RESTART THE COMPUTER and then do step 2

STEP 2

2019-03 Servicing Stack Update for Windows 7 for x86-based Systems (KB4490628)
http://download.windowsupdate.com/c/msdownload/update/software/secu/2019/03/windows6.1-kb4490628-x86_3cdb3df55b9cd7ef7fcb24fc4e237ea287ad0992.msu

2019-03 Servicing Stack Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4490628)
http://download.windowsupdate.com/c/msdownload/update/software/secu/2019/03/windows6.1-kb4490628-x64_d3de52d6987f7c8bdc2c015dca69eac96047c76e.msu

That should be all there is to it and the latest version of Malwarebytes will install on your system again.
