Malwarebytes folders tampered by malware

Recommended Posts

Hello. At the outset I should mention I'm not a computer geek (but my system was never infected before until now) and that this is going to be a long post.

My pc, HP Zbook g5 x360(Windows 10 home) was infected with some kind of malware. I am not sure what it was but several unwanted programs(like remote assistance) were allowed through my firewall. I tried to run windows defender(including offline scans which crashed) and Malwarebytes but they didn't detect anything. I tried to manually uninstall some suspected programs like (your phone, your account etc. that I never installed) but it backfired and locked me out of my system. I recovered my data and reset my pc several times but to no avail. Now I know that the infected files are not only in the system folders, but also in Malwarebytes and system recovery folders.

I would like to mention that I downloaded a file probably from a wrong HP support assistant website (Check the file on downloaded from the download button.

 https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html

I suspect this because after I reset my system and installed this file my system started behaving strangely (like showing glitches on the screen, I didn't have administrative rights to stop suspicious programs that I never installed and again to find the same list of programs that were allowed through my firewall)

So I borrowed a friend's PC(MSI : unsure about model : Windows 10 home) to create a recovery usb drive to clean windows installation. Not only did the clean windows fail and become non-functional, the recovery drive also got infected. I tried to format it with my friend's laptop and now his PC is also infected.

Here I am coming to the actual problem. I plugged in the infected recovery drive to my friends laptop to format it [at around 3am 04/06/2021] and immediately found the same programs such as your phone, your account running on his laptop. So I opened the locations of these files and sorted them by last modified and Malwarebytes was the first folder that was modified exactly around the same time and date I inserted my drive. Unfortunately I was not able capture a picture of it but I have attached the other modified files on system32 folder. Now more modifications have occurred as the malware forced a restart on the system.

I tried to reinstall Malwarebytes using the Malwarebytes Support Tool Version 1.8.4.896 provided in one of the support forums but that couldn't clean the version initially but later it gave a success message and a bunch of logs and reports that I have attached here. Unfortunately I cant upload the zipped folder of malwarebytes itself since it is larger than the limit allowed here. I suspect that either malwarebytes folder has been tampered with or that malwarebytes is overlooking the malware in the PC. Most of the scans have returned no threats so I suspect that malwarebytes program itself has been replaces. I have 2 malwarebytes folders (C/Program Files and another in C/Program Data. Attempting to repair system using the Support Tool gives an error that: the registry back up has failed, however when i continue, it prompts a system restart but nothing changes after the restart. Now the malware has replaced all the browsers with new ones probably collecting all my browsing data and more. Further I have all my data in the system with no back-up.

Please let me know and support me to get rid of the malware on my PC and my friend's pc which is also now infected. I apologize for the rant I am not sure of what information i need to give exactly.
Thanks in advance.

Hello @Nike1234

If you're talking about this $Windows.~BT folder that is normal

https://www.howtogeek.com/268667/what-is-the-windows.bt-folder-and-can-you-delete-it/

Let me have you run the following please.

Please run the following steps and post back the logs as an attachment when ready.
Temporarily disable your antivirus or other security software first. Make sure to turn it back on once the scans are completed.
Temporarily disable Microsoft SmartScreen to download software below if needed. Make sure to turn it back on once the scans are completed.
If you still have trouble downloading the software please click on Reveal Hidden Contents below for examples of how to allow the download.

Spoiler

When downloading with some browsers you may see a different style of screens that may block FRST from downloading. The program is safe and used hundreds of times a week by many users.

STEP 01

  • If you already have Malwarebytes installed then open Malwarebytes and click on the Scan button. It will automatically check for updates and run a Threat Scan.
  • If you don't have Malwarebytes installed yet please download it from here and install it.
  • Once installed then open Malwarebytes and select Scan and let it run.
  • Once the scan is completed make sure you have it quarantine any detections it finds.
  • If no detections were found click on the Save results drop-down, then the Export to TXT  button, and save the file as a Text file to your desktop or other location you can find and attach that log on your next reply.
  • If there were detections then once the quarantine has completed click on the View report button, Then click the Export drop-down, then the Export to TXT  button, and save the file as a Text file to your desktop or other location you can find and attach that log on your next reply.
  • If the computer restarted to quarantine you can access the logs from the Detection History, then the History tab. Highlight the most recent scan and double-click to open it. Then click the Export drop-down, then the Export to TXT  button, and save the file as a Text file to your desktop or other location you can find and attach that log on your next reply.
  • If Malwarebytes won't run then please skip to the next step and let me know in your next reply that the scanner would not run.

STEP 02

Please download AdwCleaner by Malwarebytes and save the file to your Desktop.

  • Double-click to run the program
  • Accept the End User License Agreement.
  • Wait until the database is updated.
  • Click Scan Now.
  • When finished, if items are found please click Quarantine.
  • Your PC should reboot now if any items were found.
  • After reboot, a log file will be opened. Attach or Copy its content into your next reply.

RESTART THE COMPUTER Before running Step 3

STEP 03
Please download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens, click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). If you've, run the tool before you need to place a check mark here each time
  • Please attach the Additions.txt log to your reply as well.
  • On your next reply, you should be attaching frst.txt and additions.txt to your post, every time.

Thanks
