ZacharyZstorm Posted May 19, 2021 ID:1457827 Share Posted May 19, 2021 (edited) Hello and sorry if I posted on the wrong dubforum but I need some advice in setting up my Wifi connection. The brand and model of my Modem is Skyworth CM5100. The set up is as follows: ISP > Wireless Modem > End Devices. I have my Window's firewall enabled, but I didn't know that Modem and Routers have Firewalls too. When I snooped around, I saw that the firewall is in the low settings. I wanna ask what changes do I need to do? I have some of the options here and want to ask what should I enable or set them. IPv4 Firewall Protection: Off/Low/Med/High IPv6 Firewall Protection: On/Off Filter Proxy: Enable/Disable Filter Cookies: Enable/Disable Block Fragmented IP Packets: Enable/Disable Port Scan Detection: Enable/Disable IP Flood Detection: Enable/Disable I'm not sure if these settings will affect some of functions of my Wifi, but I play online games such as Valorant, League of Legends in garena, Teamfortress 2 and other Steam games, as well as watch streams on Netflix, Youtube and Cmovies. Any advice is welcomed. Thank you! In my Wifi's Low Firewall Setting, it said that No Ports are Restricted Edited May 19, 2021 by AdvancedSetup corrected font issue

ZacharyZstorm Posted May 19, 2021 Author ID:1458036 Share Posted May 19, 2021 When I use the medium firewall, why can't I play some mobile games as well as onlone games in steam?

David H. Lipman Posted May 19, 2021 ID:1458063 Share Posted May 19, 2021 Firewall Protection defaults to the most common TCP/UDP ports being allowed through. There are legitimate functions and games that may use un-common TCP/UDP ports and would require a "Firewall Rule" to allow it or them through. You can stay at Low. Or... you'll have to create Rules in Medium mode that would allow a specific TCP/UDP port allowance or a range of ports to be allowed through. ZacharyZstorm Posted May 19, 2021 Author ID:1458074 Share Posted May 19, 2021 Should I enable UPnP in order for it to automatically open and close ports for me? I don't want to use the low settings as it seems to be dangerous.
David H. Lipman Posted May 19, 2021 ID:1458076 Share Posted May 19, 2021 Only if you have hardware or software requires Universal PnP configurations. It may or may not be used by the software you have described.
ZacharyZstorm Posted May 19, 2021 Author ID:1458081 Share Posted May 19, 2021 Thank you for the help, you have mentioned to me that I should block some Ports and blocked them with the Port Filtering in our router, I have a question, it is said that with my Firewall being enabled be it low or medium, it protects me from Denial of Service Attacks. Am I safe even if it's in the low setting?
David H. Lipman Posted May 19, 2021 ID:1458083 Share Posted May 19, 2021 (edited) Individuals are rarely the target of a DoS attack unless you are a High Value Target. You'd have to read the Router's manual. I could not easily find it. Edited May 22, 2021 by David H. ZacharyZstorm Posted May 20, 2021 Author ID:1458110 Share Posted May 20, 2021 Nothing is said in the manual about the modem's firewall. Again, thank you so much for helping me throughout. Have a lovely day

Root Admin AdvancedSetup Posted May 20, 2021 Root Admin ID:1458124 Share Posted May 20, 2021 Do you have the actual physical printed manual or a PDF of the user manual? The online support doesn't seem to have the manual for it. ZacharyZstorm Posted May 20, 2021 Author ID:1458143 Share Posted May 20, 2021 I actually have the manual. Its only basic stuff about the Modem like how to access it and such. Nothing is said about the firewall and blocking of ports
Root Admin AdvancedSetup Posted May 20, 2021 Root Admin ID:1458239 Share Posted May 20, 2021 I was not able to find any manual for it either. It appears to be a very cheap Chinese made modem often offered to users in the Philippines and others around the region.
ZacharyZstorm Posted May 21, 2021 Author ID:1458391 Share Posted May 21, 2021 Yes it was provided by our ISP. Should I buy my own modem and router?
David H. Lipman Posted May 21, 2021 ID:1458408 Share Posted May 21, 2021 Owning and managing one's own Modem+Router puts the security in one's own hands and, depending upon the ISP, may save a monthly Rental charge. You'd have to check with your ISP. Some have an authorized list of appliances and may require providing the appliance MAC address to the ISP to get access into their network (aka; MAC Authentication).

You need to make certain that your ISP will allow you to have and use your own router before you even consider buying one. Cheers and good luck
