Win10: Programs open then instantly close. MB Protection layers disabled

Recommended Posts

Started up my computer this am and noticed that when I tried to open a program it would come up, then stall and close. Chrome is functional, but MS Edge and Brave start and then shutdown. Malware Bytes scans and finds nothing, but all of the protection layers are deactivated even in safe mode. I am stuck on what to do next. Any assistance would be appreciated.

I don't see an obvious infection but I do see that there is some type of path issue. Possibly from blocking by something.

Do you have access to another clean computer?

Please try to open an elevated Admin command prompt and copy / paste or type in the following and the restart the computer and let the disk check run

ECHO Y|CHKDSK C: /F

Let me know if that helps at all

Still having problems with most programs including Malware Bytes. I can only get it to run in safe mode and it doesn't detect anything. Even Windows 10 isn't operating correctly. Everything I try to access in settings hangs and then closes. The first chkdsk pass appeared to fix a few things, but after a few hours everything reverts back to being inoperable. Adobe Acrobat opens, hangs and then closes. Spotify the same. When I open up the desktop tray, 1/2 the applications close including Malware Bytes. Latest FRST scans are attached.

Can you get into Normal Mode at all?

At this point we need to try and do a Clean Boot option if possible and see if we can repair. If you tasks have really been removed then it's going to be more work trying to fix the computer than format and reinstall Windows will be.

If you can't do that then it's probably best to back up your personal data and do a clean install of Windows 10

Let me know please.

All your TASKS are missing. Which is an issue on Windows 10. Earlier versions of Windows it wasn't as important but on Windows 10 they're pretty important.

From the NORMAL Mode please open an elevated admin command prompt and type in the following and press the Enter key

SFC /SCANNOW

Then run the following as well

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

Let me know what both say please.

They both found nothing. I have not used the anit-root kit. Installed, but I cannot use it normal mode. Opens, hangs and closes.

Please log into the other Admin account. Then run FRST from that account. It could be you simply have a corrupted user account. Sadly that is too common on Windows 10. It happened before in other versions but sure "seems" to happen more in Windows 10 or at least more people reporting it.

Thanks

Well, the computer may function a bit better under this account but it's still highly messed up with regards to underlying operations.

I notice you do have Acronis True Image installed. Do you have a Full image backup of the system on an external USB drive?

If so you could backup your current documents and then do a full system restore, then copy back the updated documents.

At this point without doing a system restore I think you're looking at having to reinstall Windows from scratch.

Let me know @sem23tex

Thanks
