Error code: 731(0,6) Scanner failing to finish

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have had an infection of Vundo variant which was picked up and deleted by Superantispyware. I ran scans with A-squared, Eset, Adaware, Avira and all haven't picked up anything even before deleting the vundo. After that I ran Trendmicro rootkit buster which picked up over 200 hidden files including encrypted ones. They were all deleted except one which it will not delete.

I have run a hijack this log. ( but don't understand it)

I have tried to scan using malwarebytes anti malware. Shortly after scanning starts a detection is notified along with an error code: 731(0,6). Then further into the scan after 35 minutes 2 more detectionsa re found and then the scanner stops makes the computer rev hard and shuts down the scanning program with no record of having been run.

My concern is that something is affecting the scanner which may be still on the machine.

Could someone please advise what I should do?

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the assistance, I have run a Hijack this and here is the result:

Hello and welcome to Malwarebytes

Please try to run the following and post back the log.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**

  1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Tools->Options->Main tab
    • Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

[*]During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

CF_download_FF.gif

CF_download_rename.gif

[*]It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.

[*]Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.

[*]Close any open browsers.

[*]Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

-----------------------------------------------------------

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Close any open browsers.
  • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
  • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
  • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

-----------------------------------------------------------

[*]Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.

[*]When finished, it will produce a report for you.

[*]Please post the "C:\Combo-Fix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

If you still cannot get this to run, try booting into Safe Mode, and run it there.

To boot into Safe Mode, tap F8 after BIOS, and just before the Windows logo appears. A list of options will appear, select "Safe Mode."

If this doesn't work either, try the same method (above method), but name Combofix.exe to iexplore.exe instead, or winlogon.exe..

This because It also happens in some cases that malware blocks EVERY process except for what is in its own whitelist, so this whitelist also includes system important processes such as iexplore.exe, explorer.exe, winlogon.exe...

Thanks for the response and directions Advanced setup. As you can probably see it is a Japanese operating sytem.

Update: All previously detected items were deleted using Trend Micro rootkit buster.

Malwarebytes Antimalware is still getting the error though.

Please try this on the computer that is having an issue.

1. Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware using Add/Remove programs in the control panel.

2. Restart your computer (very important).

3. Download and run this utility. mbam-clean.exe

4. It will ask to restart your computer (please allow it to).

5. After the computer restarts, install the latest version from here. mbam-setup.exe

Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent

Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration. Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.

Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray and that you can run a quick scan and all is working as expected.

Also take a look at this FAQ and make sure you have file exclusions setup for your Anti-Virus if needed.

Please unhide your files and folders setting so that you can see system files. Then look in your Windows and System32 folders and see if you can find any files that have just an extension with no file name. Like: .exe .xyz etc Or characters like (%& as the starting character and no extension.

Does it give this error on screen from the program or where do you see it?

What does this key say in the Registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup

SystemPartition

Just sort Explorer by name, by type, look around and see if you find anything odd is all.

I can try to write up a little batch file for this probably tomorrow. Too many other things going on right now and I need to reference the exact file name types that another user was having issues with that this fixed it.

Thanks for your replies and help.

Did the previous combofix log look clean of infections?

I may just do a reformat and give everything a go from there. This forum seems very busy, but if you have written something up I'll give it a go, if not I may just move on and do a reformat as in hindsight it would have been quicker. I'll follow your directions and go from there.

Thanks.

No guarantee that this will help but take a look here: http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.p...st&p=131222

Combofix found and removed stuff yes but it now seems to be clear unless something is very hidden. I wouldn't want you to format and start over just because mbam wont' run properly on your system. A good clean build is a good thing though if you're up to it and know what you're doing.

Just let me know how you'd like to proceed but right now if you're no longer having any Malware related issues then let's run an Online AV scan and go from there.

nod32scanner.jpg

Please temporarily
disable
your current Anti-Virus in order to run this Online Scanner.

Using Internet Explorer:

  • Vista and Windows 7
users need to right-click on the IE icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select
    "Run as Administrator"
    from the context menu.

  • Click
    here
to run the Eset Online Scanner using Internet Explorer.

  • Click on the
    ESET Online Scanner
    button.

  • Click on the checkbox
Yes, I accpet the Terms of Use
and click on the Start button.

  • By default the ActiveX installer will be blocked by Internet Explorer. You should see a yellow banner at the top of the Window.

  • Click the top of the Window and select "Run ActiveX
    C
    ontrol" and then click the
    Run
button on the next dialog box.

  • Click the
    Retry
button if prompted to resend the request to load and run the ActiveX control from ESET

  • Make sure you
    Uncheck
    the
    Remove found threats
checkbox in case we need you to submit a copy of any files found.

  • Click on the
    Advanced settings
selection in the middle and place a checkmark on the following items

  • Scan for potentially unwanted applications

  • Scan for potentially unsafe applications

  • Enable Anti-Stealth technology

  • Under Current scan targets: click the Change... item and make sure it's set to Local drives and the Operating memory

  • Then click on the Start button and it will start downloading signature database files to update the program
  • Once the database files are downloaded it should automatically start scanning your system for threats.
  • When the scanner is done please click on the List of found threats and click on Export to text file...
  • Save the file as NOD32_SCAN.TXT to your Desktop
  • Click the << Back button. For now do not uninstall the program or delete the quarantine files, just click the Finish button.
  • The next screen is advertisement to purchase the product. You can just close that window for now.
  • If we need to run the program later on it can be ran from here: C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET Online Scanner\OnlineScannerApp.exe
  • Open the file you saved to your Desktop as NOD32_SCAN.TXT and select all and copy/paste it back on your next reply

Using Another Browser

  • Please click
    here
to launch the application which installs and launches ESET Online Scanner in a separate window.

Sorry been away from the computer.

That link was interesting reading but is way beyond me as far as doing what they did.

Before reading your 2nd last post I trialled Sunbelt Counter Spy and it found a Backdoor.Bifrost in the registry (now quarantined no report). I also gave Bitdefender a run and it gave a clean result after the backdoor find.

I have now seen your ESET online scan request. I have ESET on my machine. I'll give them a run. As it is night here I'll have to do it in the morning.

Thanks.

I've run a scan using my ESET security suite scanner and it didn't detect anything - it never has by the way.

I think I'll wait and see what happens as there seems to be no malware symptoms - Microsoft updates are unhindered not like before.

Thanks for your assistance and I'll try MBAM in the future on my new machine (just arrived from Dell) or if I do a reformat on this one. This machine gets tired with only 512MB ram. Please feel free to close this thread and to help others in more serious need.

Is there anyway I can send a donation?
