Hi.

Please I really need your help here. I scanned my laptop today with malwarebyte scanner and it dug out some viruses relating to svc host precisely. Then I removed or quarantined them since they were infected and was prompted to restart my PC - lo! I couldn't boot to windows. I only get a black screen and a spinning animated dots. That's all I get. Please help me. What do I need to do? I have also had to put my hard drive into another pc because for some reason, i cannot enter recovery mode on it - Toshiba. Please just help me out. Would love your timely response. Have a whole lot to do on my PC and I've been on it since the early hours of this morning.

When I try to boot, after it has gotten past the windows logo, normally I'm supposed to have a blue screen with this animated dots that rotate in circles and then the log on screen but after the windows logo, all I have is a black screen with the animated dots rotating in circles and it keeps on rotating like forever. As for the other PC, it has windows- Home edition installed.

Boot up your spare PC, in the search function type or copy/paste recovery drive, hit enter. In the new window make sure to untick "back up system files to recovery drive" (This PC is a different version so system files are no good.) When that is unticked click next.

The recovery drive will be created, you will be prompted to plug in your USB flashdrive, it will say 1GB. I ask for 8 incase we need to add other stuff later.... The USB will be formatted before the recovery drive is loaded.... Let me know when that completes...

This will be on the sick PC, when you boot from the Recovery Drive (USB) you will then be able to use the following instructions to access system restore...

In the Recovery Options, click Troubleshoot.

Hiya Israel_codes,

Lets see if we can get a log with FRST.....

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool from here:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-recovery-scan-tool/

save it to the same USB flash drive as the Recovery Drive. Ensure to get the correct version for your system, 32 bit or 64 bit

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

Plug the flash drive into the infected PC.

After booting to the Recovery Environment select the correct keyboard, from the next window select "Trouble Shoot" then "Command Prompt"

Continue with the following:

  • In the command window type in notepad and press Enter.
  • The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
  • Select "Computer" or "My PC" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
  • In the command window type E:\frst64 or E:\frst depending on your version. Press Enter
  • Note: Replace letter E with the drive letter of your flash drive.
  • The tool will start to run.
  • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive.

Post log from Flash drive via spare PC....

Thanks,

Kevin

Thanks Kevin.

I had to reinstall windows... I didn't lose my files but my apps. Thanks for your help.

But I have a question. Regarding malwarebytes scanner. It proved to be effective enough to search put the viruses on my PC even Windows Defender couldn't do that. Consequently, it shows the scanner is powerful. I saw links regarding it online that it would help me remove viruses hiding and hidden anywhere cos I had my chrome browser opening up links at the click of any area on the browser's window. Lo, the scanner fixed this. I probed further to search out all viruses on my PC and it did but it got me here. What did I do wrong? Do not know, I might need to use the scanner anytime (as we all get viruses crawling into our PCs one way or the other), is it still recommended to use the scanner? I mean knowing fully well the removal of virus caused me to reinstall windows.

Hiya Israel_codes,

I definitely recommend Malwarebytes, not only as a scanner but the premium version so that you have "Real Time" protection. I have nothing to gain from that recommendation as I am not an employee of Malwarebytes.

Its a shame you reinstalled windows, I`m sure we would have got your system booting correctly. Usually System restore helps, if not then we can see what is wrong with FRST scan and make the required fix...

Did you refresh windows via the recovery drive..?

Thank you,

Kevin..

Refresh windows or restore windows???

I have tried restoring severally - different restore points.

I'll still use malwarebytes scanner as you've recommended since I saw it capabilities. I just hope I do not fall into this kind of issue next time. I didn't want to reinstall windows but I had to.

I'm really grateful for your help Kevin. You really were patient with me.

Should I run into this kinda error next time (though I wish not😄), I'd reach out to you.
