What are the best file converters to download

I need to convert video and while a online converter can be very reliable I still have to upload and download multiple GB's of raw footage with a decently slow internet. When I look for a program to download I always see stuff from sketchy websites that I wouldn't even risk downloading from. Does anyone know which programs are the best for video file conversion?

Hey Dave,

I have MKV hoping to move it to MOV or MP4. I like to save my raw footage in MKV because if I have a power outage at least the footage is saved but the problem is premiere doesn't support MKV.

You can try VLC Player from VideoLAN. 

• Start VLC Player and then choose;  Media --> choose "Convert / Save"
• Choose "Add" and add the MKV file that you want to save as MP4. Then click the Down Arrow icon next to the Convert / Save button and choose Convert.
• From the drop-down list of format Profiles choose MP4

Both are great opensource programs with some differences to them. I've used both before and even some commercial products have been known to use their libraries
