Hi, Windows 10 20H2 fresh install, MalwareBytes Premium 4.3.0. I've had several BSoDs in the last month all naming mwac.sys as the cause, this is the first since a Windows re-install two days ago. Details below, other AV product running is HitmanPro.Alert 3.8.8 build 889. I've turned off Web Protection in MWB for now but would expect to be able to enable it at some point. Any feedback or progress with this? I see it's a fairly consistent problem for people.

Hi,

Thanks for posting in the Malwarebytes for Windows Help forum.

If you are having technical issues with our Windows product, please do the following:

Malwarebytes Support Tool - Advanced Options

This feature is designed for the following reasons:

  • For use when you are on the forums and need to provide logs for assistance
  • For use when you don't need or want to create a ticket with Malwarebytes
  • For use when you want to perform local troubleshooting on your own

How to use the Advanced Options:

Spoiler
  1. Download Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Double-click mb-support-X.X.X.XXXX.exe to run the program
    • You may be prompted by User Account Control (UAC) to allow changes to be made to your computer. Click Yes to consent.
  3. Place a checkmark next to Accept License Agreement and click Next
  4. Navigate to the Advanced tab
  5. The Advanced menu page contains four categories:
    • Gather Logs: Collects troubleshooting information from the computer. As part of this process, Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) is run to perform a complete diagnosis. The information is saved to a file on the Desktop named mbst-grab-results.zip and can be added as an email attachment or uploaded to a forum post to assist with troubleshooting the issue at hand.
    • Clean: Performs an automated uninstallation of all Malwarebytes products installed to the computer and prompts to install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows afterwards. The Premium license key is backed up and reinstated. All user configurations and other data are removed. This process requires a reboot.
    •  Repair System: Includes various system-related repairs in case a Windows service is not functioning correctly that Malwarebytes for Windows is dependent on. It is not recommended to use any Repair System options unless instructed by a Malwarebytes Support agent.
    • Anonymously help the community by providing usage and threat statistics: Unchecking this option will prevent Malwarebytes Support Tool from sending anonymous telemetry data on usage of the program.
  6. To provide logs for review click the Gather Logs button
  7. Upon completion, click OK
  8. A file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your Desktop
  9. Please attach the file in your next reply.
  10. To uninstall all Malwarebytes Products, click the Clean button.
  11. Click the Yes button to proceed.
  12. Save all your work and click OK when you are ready to reboot.
  13. After the reboot, you will have the option to re-install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows.
  14. Select Yes to install Malwarebytes.
  15. Malwarebytes for Windows will open once the installation completes successfully.

Greetings,

Please try installing the newest beta for Malwarebytes which corrects several known BSOD issues with MWAC.sys.  To do so, open Malwarebytes and go to settings by clicking the small gear icon in the upper right, then scroll down to the Beta updates section under the General tab and enable the option, then scroll back to the top and click the Check for updates button and restart your system if prompted to do so.

Once that is done, test to see if the BSOD issue is resolved and let us know how it went.

Thanks

That's OK, just let us know if you encounter another BSOD, and if you don't encounter one within say a week or more (assuming you experienced it that often previously), then that should mean it's stable.

In the meantime, if you can provide the following memory dumps from previous crashes, I can ask a member of the team to take a look and see if the cause of the BSODs you experienced were the result of the issue addressed in the beta:

C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\012121-10078-01.dmp
C:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMP

Since that second file listed is likely to be quite large, your best bet would be to ZIP both files and upload them to WeTransfer.com, clicking the circular ... button on the page and selecting the option to send the file as a link, then once the upload completes, post the link here.

Once the memory dumps are analyzed, they can likely provide confirmation on whether the issue should be fixed for you with the beta.

A new version of Malwarebytes has just been released which includes fixes for several BSOD issues.  Details are available in this post.

To install the new version, open Malwarebytes and navigate to settings by clicking the small gear icon in the upper right, then click the Check for updates under the General tab and allow it to download and install the new version, restarting your system once it completes to ensure that the new components are loaded into memory.
