Got a bad case of trojan.vundo

Recommended Posts

Hello,

So I have a bad case of the trojan.vundo guys and I have been trying to get rid of them with no luck. I have been trying to get MBAM to work as well, but it will not load. I get a missing shortcut window when I try to open it. I have a norton virus scanner on my laptop which has shown multiple trojans and I did have AVG but AVG didn't see the trojans. I am at wits end with this and hope you guys can get me clean again. Here is a log I got through Trend Micro Hijackthis.

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2

can you load the taskmanager? if you can do you have a process called svchast.exe? Yes i meant to spell it with an "a" i just ran into this last friday. if you stop that process and delete that file (it was either in the windows director or the windows\system32 directory) that should let you run mbam. It should also fix some of the administrator privelages (or lack thereof) as well.

Sorry for the late reply. I do not have the svchast.exe process running.

  • Root Admin

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**

  1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Tools->Options->Main tab
    • Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

[*]During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

CF_download_FF.gif

CF_download_rename.gif

[*]It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.

[*]Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.

[*]Close any open browsers.

[*]Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

-----------------------------------------------------------

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Close any open browsers.
  • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
  • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
  • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

-----------------------------------------------------------

[*]Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.

[*]When finished, it will produce a report for you.

[*]Please post the "C:\Combo-Fix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

If you still cannot get this to run, try booting into Safe Mode, and run it there.

To boot into Safe Mode, tap F8 after BIOS, and just before the Windows logo appears. A list of options will appear, select "Safe Mode."

If this doesn't work either, try the same method (above method), but name Combofix.exe to iexplore.exe instead, or winlogon.exe..

This because It also happens in some cases that malware blocks EVERY process except for what is in its own whitelist, so this whitelist also includes system important processes such as iexplore.exe, explorer.exe, winlogon.exe...

Hello,

So I had some problems running combofix. Upon running it the first time when the application was logging a report my comp froze. So I rebooted and ran it again in safe mode. Upon the rebooting it went into normal mode and froze again. Then I ran it in safe mode again but this time it rebooted in safe mode and completed the task. I did notice the very first time ComboFix ran it deleted some files which may not be in the log here. After all this was done I ran HijackThis. After that I unistalled my attepted Malwarebytes app and reinstalled it again with no problems. I ran Malwarebytes which found additional items and deleted them. I want to be sure to keep these buggers off my machine. Please let me know if I should proceed with additional steps. Thank You so much for your help!

  • Root Admin

Please run the following.

Update and Scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

[*]When the update is complete, select the Scanner tab

[*]Select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.

[*]Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

[*]When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply

    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Then post back the MBAM log and a new Hijackthis log.

Then run this

Please go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove and for now remove ALL versions of JAVA

Then run this tool to help cleanup any left over Java

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location and post it back when you reply
Then look for the following Java folders and if found delete them.
    C:\Program Files\Java
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java
    C:\Windows\Sun
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Java

Hi,

Well the virus is still there. Dang! I ran another ComboFix again in safe mode (mbam.exe was deleted) because my comp kept freezing. Upon starting up my laptop the "security tool" program was there and well took over. I am going to post all the new logs here. I redid everything up to the Java part. After mbam prompts me to restart I click yes, but have to reboot the comp manually. After I reboot I do another scan and find all the same viruses. I went through this process about four times with the same result. Let me know how to proceed.

Thank You I appreciate all your help!!!

When the scan completes Notepad will open with with your results log open. Do a File, Exit.

A caution - Do not run Combofix more than once. Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or your computer to lock. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light. If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

Post back the Combofix log on your next reply.

Okay then please try the following

Please download to your Desktop: Dr.Web CureIt

  • After the file has downloaded, disable your current Anti-Virus and disconnect from the Internet
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file, then click the Start button, then the OK button to perform an Express Scan.
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click on the Complete scan radio button.
  • Then click on the Settings menu on top, the select Change Settings or press the F9 key. You can also change the Language
  • Choose the Scanning tab and I recomend leaving the Heuristic analysis enabled (this can lead to False Positives though)
  • On the File types tab ensure you select All files
  • Click on the Actions tab and set the following:
    • Objects Infected objects = Cure, Incurable objects = Move, Suspicious objects = Report
    • Infected packages Archive = Move, E-mails = Report, Containers = Move
    • Malware Adware = Move, Dialers = Move, Jokes = Move, Riskware = Move, Hacktools = Move
    • Do not change the Rename extension - default is: #??
    • Leave the default save path for Moved files here: %USERPROFILE%\DoctorWeb\Quarantine\
    • Leave prompt on Action checked

[*]On the Log file tab leave the Log to file checked.

[*]Leave the log file path alone: %USERPROFILE%\DoctorWeb\CureIt.log

    [*]Log mode = Append

    [*]Encoding = ANSI

[*]Details Leave Names of file packers and Statistics checked.

[*]Limit log file size = 2048 KB and leave the check mark on the Maximum log file size.

[*]On the General tab leave the Scan Priority on High

[*]Click the Apply button at the bottom, and then the OK button.

[*]On the right side under the Dr Web Anti-Virus Logo you will see 3 little buttons. Click the left VCR style Start button.

[*]In this mode it will scan Boot sectors of all disks, All removable media, and all local drives

[*]The more files and folders you have the longer the scan will take. On large drives it can take hours to complete.

[*]When the Cure option is selected, an additional context menu will open. Select the necessary action of the program, if the curing fails.

[*]Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the files.

[*]This will move it to the %USERPROFILE%\DoctorWeb\Quarantine\ folder if it can't be cured. (in this case we need samples)

[*]After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list

[*]Save the report to your Desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv

    [*]Close Dr.Web Cureit.

[*]Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.

[*]After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously to your Desktop in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.

Okay. Not sure if you have something there blocking CF or if it just doesn't like one of the files in the program.

Please try this DDS when Web is done.

Download
DDS
and save it to your desktop

Disable any script blocker if your Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware has it.

Once downloaded you can disconnect from the Internet and disable your Ant-Virus temporarily if needed.

Then double click
dds.scr
to run the tool.

When done, the
DDS.txt
will open.

Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.

When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:

  1. DDS.txt

  2. Attach.txt

  • Save both reports to your desktop

  • Please include the following logs in your next reply:
    DDS.txt
    and
    Attach.txt

Then Quit All Browsers including the one you're reading this in now.
Then click on Fix checked and then quit HJT

STEP 02

Please download the following tool to your Desktop and then double-click and run it.

When it asks to reboot the computer go ahead and reboot.

STEP 03

You may have corrupted files on your disk. Please try running the following.

First close ALL Applications as this routine will automatically restart your computer.

Click on START - RUN and copy / paste the following entry into the box and click OK

CMD /C ECHO Y|CHKDSK C: /F | SHUTDOWN /R /T 30

STEP 04

Then donwload a NEW copy of CF and try to run it again.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**

  1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Tools->Options->Main tab

Hi,

I had to run CF in safe mode. When in regular mode it would complete stage 16 then lock up. These logs are for a second run in safe mode. After the first run in safe mode it rebooted into normal mode and locked up. Here are those logs followed by HijackThis logs.

Okay not sure why these two files are being so stubborn. Please try the following.

Please download and run the Trend Micro Sysclean Package on your computer.

NOTE! This scan will probably take a long time to run on your computer so be patient and don't use it while it's scanning.

  • As an example on 2009-06-05 the files to download are:
    sysclean.com
    |
    lpt173.zip
    |
    ssapiptn777.zip

  • On the Spyware Pattern page scroll down to this section:
Detection and Cleanup (Trend Micro Anti-Spyware)

  • Root Admin

You might be able to if you have Internet connection in Safe Mode.

Let's try a couple of other scanner again.

Please download the following scanning tool. GMER

  • Download the randomly named EXE and copy the file to your Desktop. Remember what its name is.

  • Double click on
    random named exe file
    and run it.

  • It may take a minute to load and become available.

  • Do not make any changes. Click on the
    SCAN
button and DO NOT use the computer while it's scanning.

  • Once the scan is done click on the
    SAVE
button and browse to your Desktop and save the file as
    GMER.LOG

  • Zip up the
    GMER.LOG
    file and save it as
    gmerlog.zip
and attach it to your reply post.

  • DO NOT
directly post this log into a reply. You
    MUST
attach it as a .ZIP file.

  • Click OK and quit the GMER program.

RootRepeal - Rootkit Detector

Close ALL applications and as many items in the task tray that will stop and exit.

  • Please download the following tool:
    RootRepeal - Rootkit Detector

  • Direct download link is here:
    RootRepeal.rar

  • If you don't already have a program to open a .RAR compressed file you can download a trial version from here:
    WinRAR

  • Extract the program file to a new folder such as
    C:\RootRepeal

  • Run the program
    RootRepeal.exe
    and go to the
    REPORT
    tab and click on the
    Scan
    button

  • Select
    ALL
of the checkboxes and then click
    OK
and it will start scanning your system.

  • If you have multiple drives you only need to check the C: drive or the one Windows is installed on.

  • When done, click on
    Save Report

  • Save it to the same location where you ran it from, such as
    C:\RootRepeal

  • Save it as
    your_name_rootrepeal.txt
    - where your_name is your
    forum name

  • This makes it more easy to track who the log belongs to.

  • Then open that log and select all and copy/paste it back on your next reply please.

  • Quit the RootRepeal program.

    Please create a BOOTLOG
  • Delete the following file if it exists. C:\Windows\ntbtlog.txt
  • Restart the computer and press F8 when Windows start booting. This will bring up the startup options.
  • Select "Enable Boot Logging" option and press enter.
  • Windows prompts you to select a Windows Installation (even if there is only one windows installation)
  • This boots windows normally and creates a boot log named ntbtlog.txt and saves it to C:\Windows

Hi,

RootRepeal would not run beyond the initializing stage. My computer never froze but RootRepeal wouldn't advance. I also got a message that I was low on virtual memory and windows was going to increase it. Also twice I got a serious system error causing the program to quit. I did run gmer which is attached and also here are my boot logs.

Still don't see anything obvious that would be allowing those files to come back. Please temporarily disable your AVG and run the following scanner and we'll see if it can detect anything.

nod32scanner.jpg

Please temporarily
disable
your current Anti-Virus in order to run this Online Scanner.

Using Internet Explorer:

  • Vista and Windows 7
users need to right-click on the IE icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select
    "Run as Administrator"
    from the context menu.

  • Click
    here
to run the Eset Online Scanner using Internet Explorer.

  • Click on the
    ESET Online Scanner
    button.

  • Click on the checkbox
Yes, I accpet the Terms of Use
and click on the Start button.

  • By default the ActiveX installer will be blocked by Internet Explorer. You should see a yellow banner at the top of the Window.

  • Click the top of the Window and select "Run ActiveX
    C
    ontrol" and then click the
    Run
button on the next dialog box.

  • Click the
    Retry
button if prompted to resend the request to load and run the ActiveX control from ESET

  • Make sure you
    Uncheck
    the
    Remove found threats
checkbox in case we need you to submit a copy of any files found.

  • Click on the
    Advanced settings
selection in the middle and place a checkmark on the following items

  • Scan for potentially unwanted applications

  • Scan for potentially unsafe applications

  • Enable Anti-Stealth technology

  • Under Current scan targets: click the Change... item and make sure it's set to Local drives and the Operating memory

  • Then click on the Start button and it will start downloading signature database files to update the program
  • Once the database files are downloaded it should automatically start scanning your system for threats.
  • When the scanner is done please click on the List of found threats and click on Export to text file...
  • Save the file as NOD32_SCAN.TXT to your Desktop
  • Click the << Back button. For now do not uninstall the program or delete the quarantine files, just click the Finish button.
  • The next screen is advertisement to purchase the product. You can just close that window for now.
  • If we need to run the program later on it can be ran from here: C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET Online Scanner\OnlineScannerApp.exe
  • Open the file you saved to your Desktop as NOD32_SCAN.TXT and select all and copy/paste it back on your next reply

Using Another Browser

  • Please click

Hello,

Here are my logs from ESET followed by the logs for mbam. I haven't tried to remove the files through mbam. I left it where it is asking if I want to remove the viruses. Let me know if I should remove them.

Thank You.
