How to start custom scan immediatly?

Recommended Posts

When I click "Scan" I get no options to what and how to scan, it just starts.

To get options for scanning I have to use the planner, for example if I want to enable rootkit scanning and to specify drives. This doesnt start immediatly however, even when selecting the current precise minute it will still wait 5 minutes to actually begin the scan.

I dont understand why this is so difficult, it should be straightforward options for me to select when I click "Scan". How does one IMMEDIATELY start a custom scan?

Hi,

Thanks for posting in the Malwarebytes for Windows Help forum.

If you are having technical issues with our Windows product, please do the following:

Malwarebytes Support Tool - Advanced Options

This feature is designed for the following reasons:

  • For use when you are on the forums and need to provide logs for assistance
  • For use when you don't need or want to create a ticket with Malwarebytes
  • For use when you want to perform local troubleshooting on your own

How to use the Advanced Options:

Spoiler
  1. Download Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Double-click mb-support-X.X.X.XXXX.exe to run the program
    • You may be prompted by User Account Control (UAC) to allow changes to be made to your computer. Click Yes to consent.
  3. Place a checkmark next to Accept License Agreement and click Next
  4. Navigate to the Advanced tab
  5. The Advanced menu page contains four categories:
    • Gather Logs: Collects troubleshooting information from the computer. As part of this process, Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) is run to perform a complete diagnosis. The information is saved to a file on the Desktop named mbst-grab-results.zip and can be added as an email attachment or uploaded to a forum post to assist with troubleshooting the issue at hand.
    • Clean: Performs an automated uninstallation of all Malwarebytes products installed to the computer and prompts to install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows afterwards. The Premium license key is backed up and reinstated. All user configurations and other data are removed. This process requires a reboot.
    •  Repair System: Includes various system-related repairs in case a Windows service is not functioning correctly that Malwarebytes for Windows is dependent on. It is not recommended to use any Repair System options unless instructed by a Malwarebytes Support agent.
    • Anonymously help the community by providing usage and threat statistics: Unchecking this option will prevent Malwarebytes Support Tool from sending anonymous telemetry data on usage of the program.
  6. To provide logs for review click the Gather Logs button
  7. Upon completion, click OK
  8. A file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your Desktop
  9. Please attach the file in your next reply.
  10. To uninstall all Malwarebytes Products, click the Clean button.
  11. Click the Yes button to proceed.
  12. Save all your work and click OK when you are ready to reboot.
  13. After the reboot, you will have the option to re-install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows.
  14. Select Yes to install Malwarebytes.
  15. Malwarebytes for Windows will open once the installation completes successfully.

I would like to add that the option to start as soon as possible is also enabled as well as the time to start was set to the current minute.

Hello @jayman1000, Open Malwarebytes GUI and click on the target sign above scan. Then on the next screen click on Scan Scheduler and select Schedule Scan you will then see Custom Scan and then select drive and files you choose to scan and then next and you will be able to select the time and and set to Daily or your choice.

Greetings,

In addition to the info from Hardhead above regarding the scheduler, to manually start a custom scan, open Malwarebytes and click on the Scanner card in the center (not the Scan button located at the bottom of the scan card; just the card itself), then select the Advanced scanners link located just below the Scan button displayed in the new menu that opens up and click the Configure Scan button beneath where it says Custom Scan on the right and you'll be able to configure whatever options you like for your scan and can then start it by clicking the Scan button located on the lower right.

Additionally, if you wish to scan a particular drive or folder, you may right-click on it and select Scan with Malwarebytes.

Just FYI, the reason that the custom scan option is not prominent in the main interface is because the scan engine used by Malwarebytes is very different from typical AVs and most other anti-malware tools as it is composed largely of heuristics threat signatures and the default scan is controlled by the Malwarebytes Research team to target all known locations where threats install themselves in addition to all running processes and loaded modules in memory, startup locations, the registry, system folders, program folders, data folders, temp folders, browsers, most of the default system and user folders and many other locations where active threats would install themselves or droppers and malware installers would be found.  Whenever a new location is discovered to be used by threats, the Research team adds it dynamically via database updates, meaning changing the default locations doesn't require a full program update/upgrade to adapt to the latest threats.  Also keep in mind that even if an active threat is running from a previously unseen/unscanned location, it should still be detected since it is running in memory and would also have to have at least one component configured to run at startup in order to persist past a system restart.

I hope this helps and if there is anything else we might assist you with, please let us know.

Thanks

I mean if that is the case that is like encouraging spammy behavior just to reach a certain VERY high post limit. So what should I do? Tour the threads making comments here and there making sure to make each post seem like it has meaning to game the system?? I dont want to do that (so I wont of course, but less caring users might). But this cant be the reason.. right?

With input from other Trusted Advisors, Experts, or even some Honorary Members that most of your posts are helpful, friendly, trying to help others we can look at adding you to the Honorary Members group which would allow editing as well as access to a couple other forum areas.

Cheers and Happy New Years
