[ RESOLVED ] Malwarebytes blocks Acronis True Image Home login to NAS on Win7

Go to solution Solved by Roger475,

The latest version of Malwarebytes (4.2.3.96/1.0.32972/1.0.1104) is blocking Acronis True Image Home 2020 (Build 25700) from automatically logging into a NAS to save the backups.

I have verified this problem on 5 different windows 7 machines. It does not affect windows 10 machines.

If Malwarebytes 'Web Protection' is turned off, then the problem goes away.

Hi,

Thanks for posting in the Malwarebytes for Windows Help forum.

If you are having technical issues with our Windows product, please do the following:

Malwarebytes Support Tool - Advanced Options

This feature is designed for the following reasons:

  • For use when you are on the forums and need to provide logs for assistance
  • For use when you don't need or want to create a ticket with Malwarebytes
  • For use when you want to perform local troubleshooting on your own

How to use the Advanced Options:

Spoiler
  1. Download Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Double-click mb-support-X.X.X.XXXX.exe to run the program
    • You may be prompted by User Account Control (UAC) to allow changes to be made to your computer. Click Yes to consent.
  3. Place a checkmark next to Accept License Agreement and click Next
  4. Navigate to the Advanced tab
  5. The Advanced menu page contains four categories:
    • Gather Logs: Collects troubleshooting information from the computer. As part of this process, Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) is run to perform a complete diagnosis. The information is saved to a file on the Desktop named mbst-grab-results.zip and can be added as an email attachment or uploaded to a forum post to assist with troubleshooting the issue at hand.
    • Clean: Performs an automated uninstallation of all Malwarebytes products installed to the computer and prompts to install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows afterwards. The Premium license key is backed up and reinstated. All user configurations and other data are removed. This process requires a reboot.
    •  Repair System: Includes various system-related repairs in case a Windows service is not functioning correctly that Malwarebytes for Windows is dependent on. It is not recommended to use any Repair System options unless instructed by a Malwarebytes Support agent.
    • Anonymously help the community by providing usage and threat statistics: Unchecking this option will prevent Malwarebytes Support Tool from sending anonymous telemetry data on usage of the program.
  6. To provide logs for review click the Gather Logs button
  7. Upon completion, click OK
  8. A file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your Desktop
  9. Please attach the file in your next reply.
  10. To uninstall all Malwarebytes Products, click the Clean button.
  11. Click the Yes button to proceed.
  12. Save all your work and click OK when you are ready to reboot.
  13. After the reboot, you will have the option to re-install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows.
  14. Select Yes to install Malwarebytes.
  15. Malwarebytes for Windows will open once the installation completes successfully.

Please try doing a clean removal and reinstall on one of the Windows 7 computers and let us know if that corrects the issue or not.

Uninstall and reinstall Malwarebytes using the Malwarebytes Support Tool

Make sure you restart the computer after the install completes @Roger475

Thanks

Could you check for updates get the new current release and restart the computer and retest please.

Updating did not solve the problem.

Onward to the next possible solution, to uninstall with the removal tool and reinstall. I did this once already, but let's try it again.

So I followed the instructions of a complete uninstall using the Removal Tool on one windows 7 machine, and I'm happy to say that last night the Acronis backup worked.

So I will now do the same to the other windows 7 machines and let's see if this solves the problem for those machines also. I will report back.

Thanks for the help!

I am happy to report that the NAS login problem on all the other machines was fixed by following the instructions of a complete uninstall using the Removal Tool, and a fresh install.

However, I am unhappy to report that a new problem has cropped up on 3 of these machine, which use apteryx.com dental imaging software. Malwarebytes is preventing these machines from communicating with the server machine.

Once Malwarebytes is exited, everything then works ok.

Please note that these 3 machines were among the 5 machines that had the removal and reinstall process, and only these 3 use the apteryx.com software.

Again, this seems to me to be similar to the NAS login problem, where this latest version of Malwarebytes is interfering/preventing communication with other devices on the network.

Can you see any logs in Malwarebytes showing a block? Does just turning off web protection correct the issue?

I am not sure how to find/read the logs?

As to turning off web protection, yes, it worked as a temporary fix for the NAS problem.

I have not had opportunity to try turning off the web protection for the apteryx.com problem. To get things working again quickly I just quit Malwarebytes completely.

It is only a temporary test. You can simply re-enable if you find there is an issue. Depending on what hardware you have and how old would possibly prevent showing the device or certain functionality of the device while SNMP is off.

However, Microsoft many years ago has deprecated SNMP and has the following to say.

Just for general security reference

Server 2012   -  08/31/2016 from Microsoft

SNMP is deprecated. Instead, use the Common Information Model (CIM), which is supported by the WS-Management web services protocol and implemented as Windows Remote Management.

Server 2016   -  08/22/2019
SMB 2+ over NetBT is deprecated. Instead, implement SMB over TCP or RDMA

If you haven't done so already, I would recommend trying the latest beta to see if it corrects the issue as it has for some users.  To do so, open Malwarebytes and navigate to settings by clicking the small gear in the upper right and scroll down to the beta updates section of the General tab and enable the option to download beta updates and click Yes when prompted, then scroll back to the top of the tab and click the Check for updates button and allow it to download and install the new beta, restarting your system once the installation completes to ensure the new components are loaded into memory.

Once that is done, test to see if the issue persists or not.

Hello @Roger475

We now have confirmation even from some business customers that have run the consumer version on systems that were previously affected and they've confirmed the issue was resolved for them.

Please follow the directions above from @exile360 and see if that corrects your issue and let us know.

Thank you
