From what I understand and I may be wrong but there is more natural gas resources around the US than any other fuel. Like I said I may stand to be corrected.

Methane Hydrate seeps in the Gulf, Caribbean and off the Oregon coast and possibly even more places.

Interestingly enough, there is a Polychaete Worm named Hesiocaeca Methanicola that thrives on Methane Hydrate seeps.

California shutdown 18 power plants in the past decade without any replacement.

Yes, interesting how some of these creatures survive where you'd never think possible.

Seems about 21 have been shut down - I've not reviewed the years when shutdown though, and it shows 3 are under construction but very small in terms of output
