Windows 10 Defender and Malwarebytes

and the license server access error is still coming up every time I start the Malwarebytes interface.

Switching off "register in the Windows Security Center" has stopped the Windows Defender nagging me to attend to an unspecified issue in Malwarebytes, so it's at least hiding the problem to some extent, but things still aren't right.

Any other suggestions?

Trying a different DNS is the next step. We have seen some ISP's DNS servers cause issues.

Hi again, sorry for the delay in reporting back.

I tried changing to the Google 8:8:8:8 DNS, but no difference I'm afraid, the error is still coming up every time I run the MB interface.

It automatically updated to version 4.1.2 earlier today, and that made no difference either.

I've done some more searching, and there are a large number of reports about this error on Malwarebytes, but nobody seems to have any definitive solution.

I should mention that I'm running Malwarebytes 3.5.1 on a couple of old Windows XP installations, and neither of them ever show this problem, and that's using the same internet connection!

I really thing MB need to look seriously at why this is happening and do something about it!

Cheers, Dave.

Malwarebytes has millions of users worldwide, the vast majority of which are running Windows 10, yet only a small number of users are affected by updating issues, with most of them being resolved either by removing Malwarebytes' servers from their HOSTS file (which shouldn't have been there in the first place, as I know of no good or legitimate reason to deliberately block Malwarebytes' servers), or by correcting an issue with their internet connection (usually an issue caused by their AV or firewall, or the use of a proxy or VPN).  A small number remain which still have issues for unknown reasons, with most of them being able to update after configuring an alternate DNS (which indicates the issue could be their network or their ISP).

Since none of the usual solutions have corrected the problem, it would be best to seek the advice of one of our top diagnosticians.  To do so, please follow the instructions in this topic, skipping any steps you are unable to complete, then create a new topic in our malware removal area by clicking here and one of our specialists will guide you in checking the system and hopefully determining what is causing the problem and getting it fixed.

Thanks, yes I have checked out everything I can, and there seems to be no explanation for the issue in my case.
I've actually tried turning the Windows 10 firewall completely off, and the error message is still there, so that's not blocking the access.
If MB 3.5.1 can apparently connect with no problem (on two different machines), I assume that there is nothing intrinsic to my internet connection that's causing the issue.
It could still be a configuration issue just on the machine that has the problem of course, but I can't for the life of me see what it could be.
I'm sure you're right that only a very small proportion of Malwarebytes' millions of users have this problem, but as the issue only manifests itself when the Malwarebytes UI is run, I do wonder how many users might have the problem but aren't aware of it!
The other strange thing is that there seems to be absolutely no problem with updating the definitions, so they can be accessed and downloaded OK, but  the license server apparently can't be contacted. Very strange.
I will look into the other support options you mention.
Thanks very much indeed for all your help.
Cheers, Dave.

If Malwarebytes is unable to reach the license servers for too long, it will notify the user that it cannot reach the servers (the error you're seeing when opening the UI) and will inform them that their protection will soon be disabled unless they are able to connect to the license servers for checkin, so even if the user never opens the UI they will still be informed of the problem.

Yes, it definitely seems most likely that it is specific to the one system since the others aren't having any trouble.  It likely is some obscure setting or network configuration issue with the system, but I'm sure they will be able to figure it out and they will have you run through several tasks to reset/verify your various connection settings, so a fix should hopefully not be far away.

Thanks again.
I don't know exactly how long my installation of MB has had this problem, but I've never seen the error message pop up spontaneously.
It only appears if I run the UI, and if I dismiss it, it then only appears again if I go to the accounts tab in the settings.
The account information displayed there appears to be correct, but probably needs to be refreshed, and that it can't do at the moment by the look of it.
I will report back if i get a resolution, as it may help anyone else who has the same issue.
Cheers, Dave.
