Why does Chrome keep adding search engines ?

Every day before I turn off my computer, I have to go in and delete the extra search engines in google chrome.

Example:

I go to youtube to watch a video - chrome adds youtube as a search engine.

I go to a author I likes blog - chrome adds the blog as a search engine.

I could go on all day.

I feel like when I have had computer issues in the past part of it my have been a search engine being added.

So , like I said before I turn off my computer I have to delete all the extra search engines that were added to chrome.

That is getting old

Hi,

Thanks for posting in the Malwarebytes for Windows Help forum.

If you are having technical issues with our Windows product, please do the following:

Malwarebytes Support Tool - Advanced Options

This feature is designed for the following reasons:

  • For use when you are on the forums and need to provide logs for assistance
  • For use when you don't need or want to create a ticket with Malwarebytes
  • For use when you want to perform local troubleshooting on your own

How to use the Advanced Options:

Spoiler
  1. Download Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Double-click mb-support-X.X.X.XXXX.exe to run the program
    • You may be prompted by User Account Control (UAC) to allow changes to be made to your computer. Click Yes to consent.
  3. Place a checkmark next to Accept License Agreement and click Next
  4. Navigate to the Advanced tab
  5. The Advanced menu page contains four categories:
    • Gather Logs: Collects troubleshooting information from the computer. As part of this process, Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) is run to perform a complete diagnosis. The information is saved to a file on the Desktop named mbst-grab-results.zip and can be added as an email attachment or uploaded to a forum post to assist with troubleshooting the issue at hand.
    • Clean: Performs an automated uninstallation of all Malwarebytes products installed to the computer and prompts to install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows afterwards. The Premium license key is backed up and reinstated. All user configurations and other data are removed. This process requires a reboot.
    •  Repair System: Includes various system-related repairs in case a Windows service is not functioning correctly that Malwarebytes for Windows is dependent on. It is not recommended to use any Repair System options unless instructed by a Malwarebytes Support agent.
    • Anonymously help the community by providing usage and threat statistics: Unchecking this option will prevent Malwarebytes Support Tool from sending anonymous telemetry data on usage of the program.
  6. To provide logs for review click the Gather Logs button
  7. Upon completion, click OK
  8. A file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your Desktop
  9. Please attach the file in your next reply.
  10. To uninstall all Malwarebytes Products, click the Clean button.
  11. Click the Yes button to proceed.
  12. Save all your work and click OK when you are ready to reboot.
  13. After the reboot, you will have the option to re-install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows.
  14. Select Yes to install Malwarebytes.
  15. Malwarebytes for Windows will open once the installation completes successfully.

There is an add on for Chrome called "Don't add custom search engines" which works most of the time.  A few get through and I delete those.

I am not a fan of Chrome for many reasons. For those that just can't seem to part with it I highly suggest you send emails and post on the support site for Chrome asking them to update the program to prevent this type of behavior

I do not mind Chrome.  Firefox has too many problems for my taste.  Cut and paste doesn't work properly on Ancestry.com.  I've reported it to Firefox developers, but nothing has been done to fix it.  I also find too many web sites that don't display properly.  In any case, I don't mind that I have to use an extension to prevent this behavior so haven't reported it to Chrome.  I find they don't respond to requests for changes very well.

Yes, everyone has different tastes. Myself I prefer security and privacy over most other features. Chrome does have some unique features as does Firefox but it's not worth giving up privacy or security to stay with Chrome.

I don't like everything Firefox does either, but given the choice it is still much safer on privacy

As for view looking different cannot say I've seen that myself but I do know its very possible as different browsers do implement code differently, but again for myself no site is rendered that differently that I visit and have noticed.

I could probably live with the web sites not displaying properly, but the problem on Ancestry.com is a much bigger issue for me.  Genealogy is my passion and I spend hours every day working on it.  The cut and paste problem makes Firefox a non-starter for me.  Cut and paste works just fine in Chrome, Edge, Edge Chromium, IE, and Brave.

I've tried other browsers, but haven't found any I really like other than Chrome and Edge Chromium.

I use Ublock Origin, Ghostery, Malwarebytes Brower Guard, and HTTPS Everywhere along with Norton and Malwarebytes Premium.  I try to turn off everything I can in a browsers privacy settings and turn everything on in the security settings.  So I have privacy and security pretty well covered I think.

I found that Don't add custom search engines and started to install it but a pop up said that that it (The add on)  can read and change all my data on the web sites that I visit.

I did not like it able to read and change my data so I did not get that.

Thank You though on the information

It's due to how it has to function that it says that. I cannot 100% vouch for the company that created the plug-in but you're trusting the Google Webstore that they have done at least some basic review of the plugin and believe it to be safe otherwise they would not allow it in there.

Even our own plugin gets blocked if we update the code and they think something is wrong in the code and we'll have to change it to meet their rules.

One of the add-ons could be affecting Ancestry. I have a few clients that are as serious about genealogy as you are.

I always tell them if a site does not work with Firefox, Just use another browser for just the site with issues.

For those who want Chrome without Google's spying/advertising and 'automatic' handling of things like push notifications, search engines and other 'helpful' (i.e., unwanted and annoying) features, SRWare Iron is a viable alternative.  It's based on the same Chromium source code, just with all of Google's data collection and advertising either removed or disabled.

I put the Add On Don't add custom search engines on Chrome

Then went to Youtube

Then went to favorite authors blog

Yaaah

Chrome did not put those in as Other Search Engines , so I did not have to delete them 🙂

Now I can do a happy dance as that saves 2 or 3 minutes of my time- every single day

🤸‍♂️
