I just had a Watchdog BSOD today. I could use a hand trying to find out what caused the BSOD. I deactivated my Malwarebytes license 30 minutes ago to see if another watchdog BSOD would occur without any real time protection.

All of my Drivers are up to date and my BIOS is up to date as well. So are my windows security updates through July.

Hi,

Thanks for posting in the Malwarebytes for Windows Help forum.

If you are having technical issues with our Windows product, please do the following:

Malwarebytes Support Tool - Advanced Options

This feature is designed for the following reasons:

  • For use when you are on the forums and need to provide logs for assistance
  • For use when you don't need or want to create a ticket with Malwarebytes
  • For use when you want to perform local troubleshooting on your own

How to use the Advanced Options:

Spoiler
  1. Download Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Double-click mb-support-X.X.X.XXXX.exe to run the program
    • You may be prompted by User Account Control (UAC) to allow changes to be made to your computer. Click Yes to consent.
  3. Place a checkmark next to Accept License Agreement and click Next
  4. Navigate to the Advanced tab
  5. The Advanced menu page contains four categories:
    • Gather Logs: Collects troubleshooting information from the computer. As part of this process, Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) is run to perform a complete diagnosis. The information is saved to a file on the Desktop named mbst-grab-results.zip and can be added as an email attachment or uploaded to a forum post to assist with troubleshooting the issue at hand.
    • Clean: Performs an automated uninstallation of all Malwarebytes products installed to the computer and prompts to install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows afterwards. The Premium license key is backed up and reinstated. All user configurations and other data are removed. This process requires a reboot.
    •  Repair System: Includes various system-related repairs in case a Windows service is not functioning correctly that Malwarebytes for Windows is dependent on. It is not recommended to use any Repair System options unless instructed by a Malwarebytes Support agent.
    • Anonymously help the community by providing usage and threat statistics: Unchecking this option will prevent Malwarebytes Support Tool from sending anonymous telemetry data on usage of the program.
  6. To provide logs for review click the Gather Logs button
  7. Upon completion, click OK
  8. A file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your Desktop
  9. Please attach the file in your next reply.
  10. To uninstall all Malwarebytes Products, click the Clean button.
  11. Click the Yes button to proceed.
  12. Save all your work and click OK when you are ready to reboot.
  13. After the reboot, you will have the option to re-install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows.
  14. Select Yes to install Malwarebytes.
  15. Malwarebytes for Windows will open once the installation completes successfully.

[  Just only some notes about the type of BSOD / Stop you mentioned at the top ]

DPC is short for Deferred Procedure Call. Watchdog refers to the bug checker, which can monitor or track your Windows programs and the PC performance.

The DPC watchdog violation blue screen error can be triggered by many different  reasons.

I have read elsewhere that some can be due to old display drivers  ( like ones for Nvidia for example.)

I went to my manufacturer's website to check and I have the latest (Intel)display driver.

You might also check this page to see if Intel has released a newer driver for your CPU's integrated graphics than the one being offered by your system manufacturer.

Ok.

I'm also going to see if BSOD reoccurs with the ransomware protection off. I'm kind of curious to find out if the ransomware protection may be the culprit.

Yes, good idea, just as long as you have everything you need backed up just in case anything goes wrong (OS corruption/file corruption etc.).  It isn't likely, but I would hate for you to lose anything important while troubleshooting.

Please let us know how things go and if there is anything further we can do to help.  In the meantime, I will monitor this thread to report to the Product team on your findings.

Thanks

Thanks. I have everything important backed up on an external hard drive.

I'm glad it didn't crash at least, though a freeze isn't much better, especially since it prevents running tools.  I'm going to ask that someone familiar with analyzing the crash dumps and logs in detail take a look here to see if they can find the cause of the trouble.

Did the hang occur with Ransomware Protection disabled, or was it active?  Did you try disabling any other modules yet to see if they might be causing it?

Hello @hopper15

Please run the following so that I can get a better idea of what might be going on. If we're unable to get it fixed up then I'll send an email to one of the BSOD guys and see if they can take a look.

Please restart the computer and then let me get an updated set of FRST logs.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system.
You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply as well.

Next,

Create an Autoruns Log:

  • Please download Sysinternals Autoruns from here.
  • Save Autoruns.exe to your desktop and double-click it to run it.
  • Once it starts, please press the Esc key on your keyboard.
  • Now that scanning is stopped, click on the Options button at the top of the program and select Verify Code Signatures and Check VirusTotal.com and Submit Unknown Images
  • Once that's done press the F5 key on your keyboard, this will start the scan again, this time let it finish.
  • When it's finished, please click on the File button at the top of the program and select Save and save the Autoruns.arn file to your desktop and close Autoruns.
  • Right-click on the Autoruns.arn file on your desktop and hover your mouse over Send To and select Compressed (zipped) Folder
  • Attach the Autoruns.zip folder you just created to your next reply

Next,

Provide System Specifications:

  • Please download Speccy from here and save the installer to your desktop or another location where you can easily find it.
  • Double-click the file to begin installation and follow the onscreen steps to complete the installation and make sure that the checkbox next to Run Speccy is checked before you click on Finish at the end.
  • Once the program starts it will analyze your system, please be patient as it may take a few moments to complete.
  • Once it finishes and none of the areas say Analyzing click on the File button at the top and select Save Snapshot...
  • Save the file to your desktop and click Ok to confirm
  • Go to your desktop and right-click on the file you just created and hover over Send to and select Compressed (zipped) Folder
  • Please attach the zip file you just created to your next post

NOTE: Due to changes from Avast please review the following installer settings

I'm headed to lunch but will check logs when I get back.

The issue with AutoRuns might be the timing. With it set to check VirusTotal it can take a long time to complete and it doesn't have good feedback on when it's done.

Yeah I noticed that as well.  At the bottom it said ready and I saw nothing else was scanning so I assumed it was finished. Also after you click save the prompt box that says it's saving to the location of your choice didn't close on it's own. I had to press escape for it to close.

As I noted before pressing F5 didn't continue the Scan.  I had to click rescan. Hopefully that worked.

Let's not update your video driver right now. I believe you said you already did, but this driver appears to be newer than the current one shown in the logs. But I want to get your Service Tag number as I think you may have a BIOS update available and I want to update that and then also do a clean removal of both Avast and Malwarebytes. Then do some other checks to update your system for fixes and then reinstall software.

This listing for now is just for reference so I don't have to look it up again for later on. Please do not update it just yet.

I updated my BIOS two weeks ago. I'm very certain I have the latest version.

I've decided I'm going to do a system image backup. I'm going to see how things go when I revert the system.
