I am 80 and need tech help to stop my computer from BSD every time

I use it.
Dell optiplex GX620 XP upgraded to
Win 7 pro 64 bit
4 GB
No boot disc.  made 1 back up when I first got, had a partition on C drive labeled D  now has disappeared.
Things I have noticed:

when restarted in safe mode videos blur on Facebook with notification

calling for a particular software, but when tried to install, Microsoft says not appropriate for this computer.
Can watch Facebook videos ok. when using normal boot, but not when in safe mode.
Microsoft security  essentials  & Malwarebytes premium are my only installed security.  only Malwarebytes

will run in safe mode.   Thanks Swiss Army knife.  🙂
After I received the FREE win 10 notice, computer fan started and now runs on high speed.

Sometimes if I wait a long time

to open any programs, fan will quiet down, but must type slow & wait between opening new tabs or it

goes back up.
BSD   happens more often if I have Microsoft hotmail/outlook mail open

and always use Firefox as browser.  can use either Facebook or Twitter, but if I have Facebook open

and try to share comments, etc to Twitter...almost automatic BSD.

Help Please.

Hi,    :welcome:
My name is Maurice. I will be helping and guiding you, going forward on this case.
Let me know what first name you prefer to go by.

Please follow my directions as we go along.  Please do not do any changes on your own without first checking with me.

If possibly you are getting help in some other venue, please then stop & provide me the detail.

Please know I help here as a volunteer.  and that I am not on 24 x 7.

I appreciate knowing you are a senior.  Lets see if this younger old-timer can help you.  Do let me know your experience level about doing things in Windows.  Like are you a recent newbie to Windows, or have you used it for a number of years.

I simply just want a feel for your level of experience with Windows apps  & possibly, how to get around in the Windows system.

Do you possibly know how to run the Windows internal app named WINVER ?

I would like to simply just get a plain MSINFO report from this machine.
Would you please go to the Start button and then the RUN option. ( Windows-key + R key )
type in

msinfo32

and tap Enter-key. This starts the Microsoft System Information tool. Allow enough time for the applet to load and finish.

Look on first screen on the menu bar.
Select File > EXPORT ...
then provide a meaningful file name and save that. Then also attach that files in a new reply so that I can see some other basic information about your hardware & operating system information.

.

To send a report or any attachment

  • To upload  attachments please click the link as shown below. Then browse to where your file is located and select it and click the Open button.

At this point,  I would advice to sdtay out of Facebook & Twitter if at all possible  ....just to avoid Windows STOP aborts.

Thanks Maurice.
Little slow getting back to you.  Toooo much Blue!
A little history:  My first computer was an ADAM that I used with

a free local dial up for internet..(time restricted & free)

and a small portable TV as my monitor.

Didn't really like Microsoft Windows as was much slower

like going through pond scum to get to the nice clean swimming pool.

Only had that ubiqutious game and a word processor for typing

letters...etc. on it.  Also could do some programming of your own and

make your own games.  Started learning C, but went to work and no time for home computer any more. (job, 2 kids, husband, clean house, mo-ze-lawn  etc.)

I can't copy the results, but here is the nibs.

Microsoft Windows
Version 6.1 (Build 7601:Service Pack 1)
C 2009 Microsoft   I run the 64 bits

Info says not verified, but have a copy I typed out that shows my

Microsoft windows key for my software in my machine
(OEM  Dell type)  Plus another key posted on my machine where

certified Microsoft tech upgraded XP machine to Win 7 Pro.

When I click the run key, this is showing as

what is entered   system 64/sfc /scannow

If I clear and enter  msinfo  or even msinf32  I

get not found.   🙂

Should I do the   system 64/sfc /scannow  ??????
Hope I didn't overload you.  Really need some help .
Is it possible to buy a system boot CD that will work?
Problems really started when I kept getting notified that

fetch  eg super fetch was not working and said something to do

with log key not showing.

Thank you in advance,  and please advise. 🙂

Goodness gracious, the Adam personal computer.  That is so far back.   😄

No, no need for you to run SFC  ( System File Checker ).

and no, Malwarebytes does not have boot media.    The Malwarebytes for Windows only runs in Windows.

You mentioned something like "super fetch" is not working ?

.

I see the report you attached.  The system runs Windows 7 Professional   ( 64-bit )

and the report itself, is quite short.  It is not what I expected.   I expected a lot more detail.

.

Let's see if you could run a specific report  so that I can have additional  information so I can better help you.

1:   Please download & Save DDS from this link  and save it to your desktop:

Don't click any flashing ads  ( if any show up).   The download will begin on its own thru your browser.

2:  RIGHT-click dds.com and select OPEN.  (If prompted,  reply YES and allow the tool to run.)

Next click the Start button.

This scan will produce 2 logs, DDS.txt and Attach.txt, and save them to your desktop.

When the report has finished, the 2 report files will show in your default text application.

Just Close those 2 windows.

3:  Please attach the two logs created to your next reply.   DDS.txt and Attach.txt

Sincerely.

Hi Carolyn.   Thank you for sending the DDS reports.   You did fine on one of the 2.

I did not get a proper copy of DDS.txt

See if you can find it again,  and next time  attach that with that next reply,  as you get the chance.

.

By the way, you had noted before

Quote

BSOD   happens more often if I have Microsoft hotmail/outlook mail open

I believe I recall that Microsoft has some sort of fix very recently for those that had a local install of the Outlook program.

You may want to do some research on that.

.

The Malwarebytes  for Windows on this machine shows as version 4.1.0.56

I very much would like for you to have the very very latest,  which is version 4.1.2.73     with Component 1.0.990

There is a very short how-to-video  about how to do that

Hi.  If any thing is confusing, then please Stop and ask first.

This new file is still not the actual one.  This is a text copy of a reply I had posted much earlier.

Lets put that off to the "table for now".

What about my suggestion to do a Check for Updates in the Malwarebytes program ?     Please try that.

Opened it and it is the correct one, also compared my update numbers and update of Malwarebytes should be correct.
I have it set to update before  each scan.  wonder why it didn't do ?

bumbling through with

some excellent, very patient help.

Thanks Maurice.

Hi.  That is perfect.  That zip file had the proper DDS report.  It shows that Malwarebytes is running.

The reason that the computer may not have had the most recent Version 4.1.2  is that maybe you just did not see the message for a Upgrade.

On full version upgrades, it requires your consent  and active action.   On changes in "Version" numbers it is not a silent automatic update.

I want to go real slow.  I need for you to look again visually

Start Malwarebytes.  click the Settings  (gear ) icon at the top right.

Then look for the ABOUT tab  and click it.   Do you see the same "component"  1.0.990  shown on yours as this image ?

Sure if you want to zip the result from "msinfo32".

So, the Windows 7 pc does have the very latest Malwarebytes.  Just do one normal / regular scan with it.

This is just simply to do a basic check for any potential  ( if any )  active malware.

.

Please do a new Scan on this machine, using Malwarebytes for Windows.

To run a Threat Scan, open Malwarebytes for Windows and click the blue Scan button.

Have patience during the run.

When the scan phase is done (  if some thing is tagged),    be real sure you Review and have all detected lines items check-marked on each line on the left. That too is very critical.

Then click on Quarantine selected.

Then, locate the Scan run report;  export out a copy;  & then attach in with your  reply.

See https://support.malwarebytes.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038479194-View-Reports-and-History-in-Malwarebytes-for-Windows-v4

do you want the simple first page or the

advanced results.  I have anything that is detected or whatever put in to quarantine automatically.
takes about 35 to 37 minutes to scan.  will give it a try!.

the zip file is much smaller than the  txtssystem summary for Maurice.7z file...

sending both.  closing up shop and doing a MWB  scan.  Later.

Thank you..hope you are still having fun.  🙂

Thanks for the reports.  Thanks for scan report from Malwarebytes.  That scan result is perfect.   No malware here.

.

I would like you to close Firefox  at the time of, or before pressing "scan"  on this next task.

I  would suggest to download, Save, and then run Malwarebytes ADWCLEANER.

Please close Chrome and all other open web browsers after you have saved the Adwcleaner and before you start Adwcleaner scan.

Adwcleaner  detects factory Preinstalled applications too!

Please download  Malwarebytes AdwCleaner  https://downloads.malwarebytes.com/file/adwcleaner

Be sure to Save the file first, to your system.  Saving to the Downloads folder should be the default on your system.

Go to the folder where you saved Adwcleaner. Double click Adwcleaner  to start it.

At the prompt for license agreement, review and then click on I agree.

You will then see a main screen for Adwcleaner. ( if you do not see it right away, minimized the other open windows, so you can see Adwcleaner).

Then click on Dashboard button.

Click the blue button "Scan Now".

allow it a few minutes to finish the Scan.   Let it remove what it finds.

NOTE:  When it comes to the section "

Pre-installed applications

You can skip that.

Please find and send the Adwcleaner "C" clean report.

In Adwcleaner, click the "Reports" button.  Look at the list of reports for the latest date & type "Clean".

Double Click that line & it will open in Notepad.   Save the file to your system and then Attach that with your reply.

That C clean report will be the one with the most recent Date and time at folder  C:\AdwCleaner\Logs

Thanks.  Keep me advised.

didn't read quite well enough.

will it hurt anything to quarantine those dell files.  They don't have any

updates or support for this machine anyway..  Built as an XP converted or upgraded to Win 7 Pro and they are no help.  Needed to upgrade the graphics because Microsoft denied Win 10 because of graphics...

Please advise.  Think there is a restore or remove from quarantine .

Please advise.
Thank you Maurice.

On the link,  it may be that the default web browser is not set to do HTTPS  accesses

retry that using this other way

http://support.malwarebytes.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038479194-View-Reports-and-History-in-Malwarebytes-for-Windows-v4

As far as the ADWCLEANER  report, that is a good run.  Since this Dell machine originally came with XP, you can make do without the applet for Dell Support.

Did the machine have a Windows crash  ( blue screen abort)  today ?

Is that type of crash now gone today & yesterday ?

lost count, at least 4 that I recall, think there is an event list somewhere ???
set my power to not let computer sleep...need at least 6 hours to catch up on a

backup service that uploads documents, photos etc to save.   has crashed twice tonight since I set it up.  Have to watch or it crashes & if you don't  indicate  by manual click to reopen in safe it will just open in normal...
was doing something else , but sitting beside the computer...had about an hour of quiet running and all of a sudden the fan motor hit high.
opened task manager and something called desktop download .exe was hogging all the cpu....should have hit stop!
tried various file names and can't find a program.   must be a very sneaky trogan????  always wonder about those that  hide then use your computer as a ddos server?    I don't have a virtual desktop program either.  enough to work with what  I have !

Is it Event viewer that will list the crashes and the reason?

Please advise.

Thank you again, Carolyn

hope you like puzzles.

Signing out of websites  ( when you are done) is a good practice.   Especially on banking or shopping sites.

You have just recently done a Scan with Malwarebytes for Windows.   You also did a different scan with the Adwcleaner.

You may if you wish do a new scan with a free scan tool from ESET   ( this is just a one time run).

I would suggest a free scan with the ESET Online Scanner

Go to https://download.eset.com/com/eset/tools/online_scanner/latest/esetonlinescanner.exe

It will start a download of "esetonlinescanner.exe"

Save the file to your system, such as the Downloads folder, or else to the Desktop.

Go to the saved file, and double click it to get it started.

When presented with the initial ESET options, click on "Computer Scan".

Next, when prompted by Windows, allow it to start by clicking Yes

When prompted for scan type, Click on Full scan

Look at & tick  ( select )   the radio selection "Enable ESET to detect and quarantine potentially unwanted applications"   and click on Start scan button.

Have patience.  The entire process may take an hour or more. There is an initial update download.

There is a progress window display.

You should ignore all prompts to get the ESET antivirus software program.   ( e.g.  their standard program).   You do not need to buy or get or install anything else.

When the scan is completed, if something was found, it will show a screen with the number of detected items.  If so, click the button marked “View detected results”.

Click The blue “Save scan log” to save the log.

If something was removed and you know it is a false finding, you may click on the blue ”Restore cleaned files”  ( in blue, at bottom).

Press Continue when all done.  You should click to off the offer for “periodic scanning”.
