Dramatic change in Scan times with New Ver 4.1.2.73

Recommended Posts

After Updating MWB the Scan times are very different.

How do I know if it is really working correctly?

Background:

Had trouble getting new Version(4.1.2.73) of MWB to work.
After update, rebooted the PC
1) Malware protection was off and would not turn on
Shutdown PC and restarted it.
1) Malware protection was on now
2) tried to run a scan, but it got stuck at Checking for updates and after 20 minutes I had to shutdown the PC to make it stop.
Restarted  the PC then I ran a scan.
The first Scan took 13 min which is 2 times what it normally takes.
So I ran another scan and it took 56 seconds. So did the next 3 scans for about the same number of files.
Shut down the pc and restarted it.
Now the scan runs 2 min 54 secs for the approx. same number of files.

Malwarebytes does some caching of files during a scan. So a scan right after a new version will take longer than the subsequent ones.

Thank you for your reply.

So, the difference in scan time for the first few scans after a new version is loaded it due it setting itself up?

Now that things have settled down subsequent scans should be in a more typical range?

And it really is working fine?

It just seemed strange to go from 6 min(old ver) to 13 mins , then 56 seconds and now to 3 minutes all for approx the same number of files scanned.

Just want to get some sense on if it is working, since I had a hard time getting it to work at all after the update.

Thank you!

Assuming you have a good spec machine and also a SSD.

Ran the update, got the all ok message. then restarted the PC.

After the restart,  MWB had the Malware Protection Turned OFF and would not let me turn it on.

Shutdown PC and then started it up.

Now the Malware Protection was on.

Tried to run a scan , but it got stuck on CHECKING For Updates (20 minutes and counting...), it wouldn't allow me to pause or cancel.

I went into task manager and ended MWB.  But it was still running "Check for updates" when I opened it.

So, I  shut down the  PC.

Restarted PC

MWB looked ok, so , then  I ran the scan that went for 13 minutes.

At this time It seems to be working , but I really don't know how to tell.

Your thoughts?

Without looking at support logs, is fast start enabled? If so.

I suggest turning off fast startup in Windows. Then restart.

I have seen updates choke if you do not run a manual update before doing your first scan. Should not be a factor but it happens.

Malwarebytes will not let you pause or cancel until the actual scans start and it will finish the current stage of the scan before it does.

Thanks for your fast reply and all your helpful information.

1) Fast Start is not an issue. So we are good there!:-)

2) I did NOT Manually check for Updates before starting a scan.( never had to before, so did not think to check manually first)

Now I know and will  be sure to Manually check first.

Thank you again for your time and for sharing your expertise.

It is much appreciated.

Right after install it does it on its own and if you scan right away, I think the 2 checks that end up going on jam it up.

It checks for updates prior to scanning, however it is subject to the same metering of program updates that scheduled update checks are.  The only way I know to force a program version update is to use the Check for updates link found under the About tab in settings.  At least that is my understanding; the button under the General tab may also work, but I'm not certain.

Updated this AM, all went well, scan time was ~ 1 minute longer. Running Win 8.1 NO SSD

On  this machine which is Win 7 Professional 64 bit , NO SSD the scan time increased by 8-9 minutes.

But it is consistent on all runs , so I guess "it is what it is"!

Not sure why it would do that with a Version upgrade , but unless someone has an idea that something is wrong ....?

Thanks!

When databases grow and shrink scan time change. When a scan is run Malwarebytes loads the entire database in to memory and the size of the database will make a difference.

Thank you to everyone for your comments.

Just to clarify ...

1) Based on the above information, Does it sound like every thing is OK with Malwarebytes update  on my PC?

2) Is there any need for me to Download the Malwarebytes Support Tool and generate a log file to post?

Thanks!

Seems like it is OK. If you have any further issues or concerns then logs are needed.

I just wanted to point out if you use the Malwarebytes support tool to uninstall and do a clean install that the scan times were much faster for me on my old Satellite laptop. Today I used the support tool and found that the scan time was much better. Don’t forget that you will have to disable the Windows Security Center if running Windows Defender and then click on the Windows Defender notification to enable Windows Defender as default AV.

Also I have “Automatic quarantine” disabled also since there may be a false positive alert when using “Artificial intelligence to detect threat” and “Use expert system algorithms to identify malicious files”. Also in “Quick scan advanced options” I don’t have anything checked. So far Malwarebytes has done a extremely great job at fixing the false positives. Yay!!

I also have these settings in “Threat Scan” below:

I can always change the “Start time” settings to suit my needs depending what time of year and when I know I’m going to be on my OS. I would only recommend these settings to advanced users.

Ever since the last update, Malwarebytes has been not just slow but painfully slow. I downloaded the latest version but it is equally slow. I have been a Malwarebytes fan for years, and it has worked well. The last two  "upgrades" have been terrible. I just downloaded the last one hoping I'd have the patience to wait for a full scan, which used to take 14 minutes. It has now been 40 minutes. It is crawling along and nowhere near the end. I just renewed my subscription but there's no way I can put up with this misery for another 328 days. The first hang up seems to be on scanning the memory. From there on, it is slow beyond all belief. This has never happened before in all the time I have used this program. How about ditching these last two upgrades, Malwarebytes, and going back two versions to the one that worked faster?

Are you talking about a full custom scan or a regular stansard scan?

I have still not finished scanning. It has now been over an hour. I am NOT happy. I am running a regular, standard scan, the one that used to take 14 minutes.

Some clarification on my original information when I started this Topic….

Since upgrading MWB from Version 4.1.0.56 to 4.1.2.73 the scan time has increased by approx. 3X.

It just seems strange that the scan time changes so much.

Here is some information that might be informative to understanding what is happening….

One of the Previous posters said something that made it sound like an uninstall/reinstall using the MWB support tool improved scan time????

This got me thinking…….

Is it my machine OR a change in MWB????

Uninstall/reinstall seems drastic but doable

Would hate to think every time there is a MWB Upgrade would need to do this.

So I downloaded the MWB Support Tool.

Here is the log:mbst-grab-results.zip

Can anyone tell what has changed and why this is happening?

Thank You!
