Possible RAT?

Recommended Posts

Good evening,

I had just gotten a new laptop last month and it's been working great. My girlfriend noticed yesterday that someone was trying to order Amazon giftcards on her account. Long story short, I'm in trouble because she thinks it was me and says she has proof that it originated from this computer. I've got nothing to hide, so I sat down with her last night, gave copies of all my history on my browser and Google activity as well. We had discovered it originated from my account. After the fact, I noticed that someone had accessed my Google account from the other side of my state.

Possible RAT, probably not, but that was my first thought. I also thought that it might be the Laptop seller. Also thought, it could be as simple as someone got my password and helped themselves to my stuff. Help me, please........

Joey

Hello @EmnJoey

Please run the following steps and post back the logs as an attachment when ready.

Go ahead and run another scan using Malwarebytes from Step 1

STEP 01

  • If you're already running Malwarebytes then open Malwarebytes and check for updates. Then click on the Scan tab and select Threat Scan and click on Start Scan button.
  • If you don't have Malwarebytes installed yet please download it from here and install it.
  • Once installed then open Malwarebytes and select Scan and let it run.
  • Once the scan is completed click on the View Report button, then the Export button and save the file as a Text file to your desktop or other location you can find and attach that log on your next reply.
  • If Malwarebytes won't run then please skip to the next step and let me know in your next reply.

STEP 02

Please download AdwCleaner by Malwarebytes and save the file to your Desktop.

  • Right-click on the program and select RunAsAdmin.jpg Run as Administrator to start the tool.
  • Accept the Terms of use.
  • Wait until the database is updated.
  • Click Scan Now.
  • When finished, please click Clean & Repair.
  • Your PC should reboot now if any items were found.
  • After reboot, a log file will be opened. Attach or Copy its content into your next reply.

RESTART THE COMPUTER Before running Step 3

STEP 03
Please download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens, click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). If you've, run the tool before you need to place a checkmark here.
  • Please attach the Additions.txt log to your reply as well.

Thanks

Are you actually using any of these Norton products?

Norton Anti-Theft (HKLM-x32\...\NAT) (Version: 1.5.0.38 - Symantec Corporation)
Norton Online Backup (HKLM-x32\...\{40A66DF6-22D3-44B5-A7D3-83B118A2C0DC}) (Version: 2.2.3.45 - Symantec Corporation)
Norton Online Backup ARA (HKLM-x32\...\NARA) (Version: 4.1.0.11 - Symantec Corporation) Hidden
Norton PC Checkup (HKLM-x32\...\NortonPCCheckup) (Version: 2.0.18.15 - Symantec Corporation)
Norton Security Dashboard (HKLM-x32\...\NortonSD) (Version: 1.1.1.9 - Symantec Corporation)

They are not listed in the WMI section of Windows Security Center and some of the files listed are from 2012 which is ancient for a computer.

Spybot is newer but really has no features available now that Windows built-in security does not already cover

Please uninstall all of the Norton software.

Go to Control Panel, Programs, Uninstall and remove all and reboot.

Locate any other software that you know for sure you no longer use and don't need and uninstall it too.

Once that's done go ahead and restart one more time and run FRST again and post back both new logs as an attachment.

My computer started lagged badly and I almost had to force close it. Thankfully I had patience and let it rest until I could actually click the button to restart. I think I had gotten everything uninstalled as far as Norton goes, but I will double check now to make sure and repost another set of .txts from the FRST64 program shortly.

This is what's left on my pc after doing an uninstall frenzy. Sorted by date* I had went through about 10 C++ things that were installed that looked fishy. I uninstall a lot more as well. Uploading the file for a new scan in a moment.

Using uTorrent or other Peer2Peer software greatly increases the risk of infecting your computer. I would highly suggest that you consider stop using such a program especially after just experiencing an issue. I'm not saying it is or was because of using torrenting but it does greatly increase the risk.

Please download the attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop.
NOTE. It's important that both files, FRST or FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on this particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system.

Run FRST or FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.
If the tool needs a restart please make sure you let the system restart normally and let the tool complete its run after restart.
The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please attach or post it to your next reply.

Note: If the tool warned you about an outdated version please download and run the updated version.

fixlist.txt

Thanks

I assume this was a used or second hand purchase? You are on Windows 8 and the update for that was Windows 8.1 that came out on August 27, 2013

Windows 8 came out on October 26, 2012

If the logs are correct it looks like someone installed, re-installed Windows 8 on May 13, 2020 less than a month ago.  Is that correct? You do know that you can do a free upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 8 do you not?

Though the RAM is pretty low and the computer is rather old. It might be a bit slow if you did install Widows 10
