Web Protection and Log in Issues

Recommended Posts

Hello

A couple of peculiar things happened this morning.  Firstly my web protection setting had turned itself off and I had to restart my computer for it to come back on again.

Secondly I wasn't able to log into the forum and was eventually locked out after entering my password too many times.  I then received an email confirming this but it said the log in attempts had come from a different location from where I live.

Obviously it would be very much appreciated if this could be investigated so if someone doesn't mind looking into it I've attached the relevant MB, Adw and FRST files for you to examine.  If you need anything else please just let me know.

Many thanks

Hello @elnorte

I would recommend you consider uninstalling Bonjour

What exactly is mDNSResponder.exe?

https://www.groovypost.com/howto/howto/what-is-mdnsresponder-exe-and-why-is-it-running/

MDNSResponder, also known as Bonjour, is Apple’s native zero-configuration networking process for Mac that was ported over to Windows and associated with MDNSNSP.DLL.  On a Mac or iOS device, this program is used for networking nearly everything.  On Windows, this process is only necessary for sharing libraries via iTunes and other Mac applications like the Apple TV that were ported to Windows.  Bonjour allows different computers running iTunes to communicate with each other regardless of network configuration, this is because it enables automatic network discovery.

What Is mDNSResponder.exe / Bonjour and How Can I Uninstall or Remove It?
https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/6456/what-is-mdnsresponder.exe-bonjour-and-how-can-i-uninstall-or-remove-it/

The logs show that the system is running one or more P2P torrenting programs.

The act of torrenting itself is not illegal. However, downloading and sharing unsanctioned copyrighted material is very much illegal, and there is always a chance of getting caught by the authorities.
Torrenting non-copyrighted material is perfectly fine and is allowed. We have seen an increase in malware being bundled with software downloads over P2P.
Please keep this in mind when sharing files that you're increasing the risk that your system might get infected. Scan all files prior to running them.

There may be some type of conflict with McAfee antivirus and Malwarebytes

Please review the following links for adding exclusions to both programs

How to exclude files from virus scans on Windows or macOS

The logs do not indicate any obvious signs of an infection at this point

After setting up exclusions please restart the computer and scan again with both McAfee and Malwarebytes and make sure both scans come back clean.

Let me know if there are any other issues.

Thank you

Hi

Firstly many thanks for the prompt response and very helpful advice.

I was fairly certain that I had uninstalled McAfee a few months back as it was not updating properly.  I've done a search of my laptop and can find no evidence of it other than a (leftover) folder in Programme Files (x86).  I suppose as an aside at this point I should ask whether it is still advisable to have an anti-virus programme that is independent of Malwarebytes?  I realise this was the case in the past but have since been under the impression that it was no longer necessary as Malwarebytes provided protection against both malware and viruses.

A few weeks back I ran a trial version of ESET as I had been re-directed to a potentially dangerous website after clicking on a link that looked perfectly safe.  This revealed no issues of concern other than a couple of 'PUPs' one of which I'm sure was linked to the Bonjour programme.  That being said Bonjour is still among my listed apps. Would you recommend a full uninstall of Bonjour or just disabling it?  Judging by your advice in your initial post it would appear the former is the better option as it provides no real benefit other than very specific functions which I am unlikely to ever use.

One last point, the ESET scan also also to uninstall utorrent as, like with McAfee, I can see no evidence of this programme when doing a search on my laptop.

I have done a further Malwarebytes scan and no threats were detected so sorry if I've created more confusion with all the additional info.

Thanks again for your help and if there is any further advice you think is worthwhile telling me please do so whenever is convenient.

Hello @elnorte

Just following up. Looks like we lost contact with each other. Do you still need further assistance with this issue?

Please post a status update when you have a moment.

Thanks

Hi

Just remembered about this the other day so apologies as well for the break down in communication.

If you still feel it would be worthwhile providing me with the assistance you previously offered that would be most appreciated.

Hope you had a nice drive with the family!

Absolutely, love to help. Let me get some new logs so we can ensure we're on the same page. I'm headed to get some sleep but will check on your reply when I wake up.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system.
You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply as well.

Thank you

Okay, well McAfee is for sure running on the system. Please go ahead and visit the following link and choose Option #2 to manually uninstall McAfee using their tool if the normal uninstall was not working for you.

http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS101331

Once it has been removed and the computer restarted please run FRST again and get me both new fresh logs again

Thank you

You have the following Chrome notifications allowed, one of which includes McAfee

CHR Notifications: Default -> hxxps://calendar.google.com; hxxps://mail.google.com; hxxps://service.mcafee.com; hxxps://www.instagram.com; hxxps://www.radiotimes.com; hxxps://www.rt.com; hxxps://www.techradar.com; hxxps://www.tomsguide.com; hxxps://www.wayfair.co.uk; hxxps://www.youtube.com

Personally I turn off ALL notifications from sites in my Firefox browser. You may want to double-check and confirm if you want to allow or not
https://blog.malwarebytes.com/security-world/technology/2019/01/browser-push-notifications-feature-asking-abused/

Let me have you run the following fix, please.

Please download the attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop or location where you ran FRST from.
NOTE. It's important that both files, FRST or FRST64, and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on this particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system that cannot be undone.

Run FRST or FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.
If the tool needs a restart please make sure you let the system restart normally and let the tool complete its run after restart.
The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt) or wherever you ran FRST from. Please attach or post it to your next reply.

Note: If the tool warned you about an outdated version please download and run the updated version.

NOTE-1:  This fix will run a scan to check that all Microsoft operating system files are valid and not corrupt and attempt to correct any invalid files. It will also run a disk check on the restart to ensure disk integrity. Depending on the speed of your computer this fix may take 30 minutes or more.

NOTE-2: As part of this fix all temporary files will be removed. If you have any open web pages that have not been bookmarked please make sure you bookmark them now as all open applications will be automatically closed. Also, make sure you know the passwords for all websites as cookies will also be removed. The use of an external password manager is highly recommended instead of using your browser to store passwords.

The following directories are emptied:

  • Windows Temp
  • Users Temp folders
  • Edge, IE, FF, Chrome and Opera caches, HTML5 storages, Cookies and History
  • Recently opened files cache
  • Flash Player cache
  • Java cache
  • Steam HTML cache
  • Explorer thumbnail and icon cache
  • BITS transfer queue (qmgr*.dat files)
  • Recycle Bin

Important: items are permanently deleted. They are not moved to quarantine. If you have any questions or concerns please ask before running this fix.

The system will be rebooted after the fix has run.

fixlist.txt

Thanks
