Have any of you heard of 5sercher.biz?  I have this on my phone and it keeps popping up with notifications.  Malwarebytes doesn't seem to see it as a problem.

Do you use Chrome as a browser on your phone.

It sounds like an issue with the push notifications feature in Chromium based browsers (which includes MS Edge).  Please see if the instructions in this Malwarebytes Labs article help or not.

Please let us know how it goes and if the issue still persists.

Thanks

Hi @RitaC,

These types of ads are usually browser related. This is caused by the way most browsers handle redirections executed by javascript code.  Most browsers don't do a great job of preventing these redirects, which also cause ad pop-ups.  Advertising affiliates are aware of this, and exploit this weakness.  Even if an advertising affiliate is shut down for using this exploit, they just come back with a different affiliate id and are right back at it.

The best way to block these pop-ups are to try a different browsers, disable javascript, install a browser with ad blocking (like Opera), and/or install Ad-block Plus.

If you encounter these pop-ups again, back out of them using Android's back key. Also, clearing your history and cache will help stop the ads from reoccurring.

Also, if you come across an ad in the notifications, you can find out if an app is causing it using this method:

  1. Press and hold the notification and it will give the option to go to MORE SETTINGS
  2. Click MORE SETTINGS and it will take you to the notifications settings
  3. Within the notifications setting, you can get to the App info by clicking the icon of the app at the top
  4. If you take a screenshot of App info section, I can try to track it down

Thanks for reaching out,

Nathan
