Malwarebytes Android Free not scanning any files?

Recommended Posts

Hey,

First time poster. I have been having problems with Malwarebytes free for android for the past two days. I have been using Malwarebytes for android for a few years now and everything has been fine. However, after updating my Samsung A20 to android 10 and Samsung's One UI 2.0 on the 13th of May, Malwarebytes has not been scanning any files at all. The program scans all the apps on my device but scans zero files when previously it has scanned files. I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app as well as checking if the app had the correct permissions (it does) but nothing has helped. Again the only thing different between the 12th when it scanned files and now when it doesn't is the update to android 10. The app version is 3.7.5.6. What can I do to fix this situation?

Hi @Reveninc,

Could do me a favor and post a screen shot AFTER the scan is done?  After the scan is done it should show 'x' amount of files scanned.  One way or another, be ensured that we ARE scanning files.

Hey,

Here is the screen shot of the result screen after the scan is finished.

I have a Galaxy S9+ and I'm experiencing the same issue, and it started at about the same time.  IT IS ABSOLUTELY NOT SCANNING FILES, based upon the progress bar which ends immediately after the app scan, as well as the verbose logs that are viewable when sending a report to Malwarebytes.

Here's a sample of a log excerpt before the problem (Emphasis added in bold blue):
-----------------------------------------
Last scan information:
Time: 2020-05-06T23:16:18.851-04:00
Duration (s): 464
Type: AFTER_UPDATE_SCAN
Malware (apps): 0 of total 477
Malware (files) : 0 of scanned 48486
-----------------------------------------

Here's what it now currently reports:
-----------------------------------------
Last scan information:
Time: 2020-05-14T19:54:53.870-04:00
Duration (s): 597
Type: ON_DEMAND
Malware (apps): 0 of total 477
Malware (files) : 0 of scanned 0

In addition to the foregoing, I've noticed two additional problems.  Malwarebytes is NOT performing scans on any of the built-in Samsung Apps that are updated through the Galaxy Store (or any app installed from the Galaxy store for that matter).  For example, if I install Instagram from the Google Play Store, Malwarebytes will perform a scan and log in in the Scan history.  If, however, I install Instagram from the Samsung Galaxy Store, Malwarebytes does not show a scan of it.  This, coupled with the fact that it absolutely is not scanning files, leads me to believe there is a significant problem.  Most users may not even be aware of this.

Finally, in an effort to troubleshoot on my own since your tech support people have been useless (when they've replied at all), I de-encrypted my SD Card.  The Security Audit should now flag my unencrypted SD Card as an issue, but the security audit shows clean -- another problem.

BUT FOR THE FACT that I have booted into safe mode and made sure there was nothing amiss with my Device Administrator app list, I would think my phone was compromised.  Now it just appears that your program is buggy.  You need to investigate the severity of this problem ASAP and figure out if there is some new malware preventing the file scans with your software of whether it is hopefully just a program flaw.  But please don't tell us it's scanning files... your own logs show it is not.

Thank you for prompt updates to this thread.

AndroidS9User,

I have also observed the same behavior of the app as you. It clearly is not scanning files based upon the fact that the progress bar stops half way and it only takes 30 to 40 seconds to run a full deep scan. Something is causing the program not to run properly. Thanks, for taking the time to make an account here and post I was starting to think I was the only one with this problem. I have also responded to your private message.

Have you managed to solve the issue?

Nameless27,

No, I have not managed to find out what the issue is with Malwarebytes. It is still scanning zero files.

Hi @AndroidS9User,

Thanks for all the info!  My analysis came from my own phone, a Pixel 2 on Android 10.  Something weird is going on here, but I thought it was just not reporting the files being scanned in real-time.  Here's a screen of my personal device after a scan.

So did this start happening to you after the May update from Google as well?  Could you create an official support ticket  referencing this forum post?

@Nameless27 Do you have a Samsung as well, and this started happening after the May update from Google as well?

Thanks @Reveninc for already submitting a ticket.

This is a shot in the dark, and I know some of you have already done something similar, but it may be worth trying this:

  1. Go to settings ---> apps and find/click Malwarebytes in the Apps list
  2. Go to Storage & cache
    1. Click Clear Storage
    2. Click Clear cache
  3. Click the Back arrow to go back to Malwarebytes main App Info screen
  4. Click Uninstall
  5. Go to Google PLAY store and re-install Malwarebytes
  6. Restart your device

Another question is do any of you have other security (anti-virus) applications installed?

Thanks for the support!

Nathan

I have retried this as the first time I believe I did not clear the Cache. However unfortunately after following the steps provided the app is still displaying zero files scanned. However, after I uninstalled and reinstalled it on my device my premium trial was still active which I found weird.

Yes. I have Avast installed on mys phone as well. Previously at the time I also had BitDefender installed however, uninstalling BitDefender has not result in no change to the situation.

If you are referring to the update to the Malwarebytes from the google play store then I am confused. As on the google play store on my phone says that the last update for the application was on the 16th of April. Is this the update you are referring to?

Thanks for responding.

I was referring to the system update since you mentioned you updated to Android 10.  Sorry I didn't make that more clear.

@mbam_mtbr
1) I have created the support ticket and referenced this thread, as requested;
2) As my phone is from Verizon, it comes preinstalled with Verizon's Digital Secure Antivirus App, which I believe is McAfee based;
3) I too have been running Bitdefender alongside Malwarebytes, but this has not been a problem with the file scanning until around May 13th when it no longer scans files, either on demand or on a reboot scan.
4) I am concerned that there are other issues with Malwarebytes that are not related to the current file scanning issue -- specifically, the apparent failure to scan apps that are either updated or installed through Samsung's Galaxy Store.  For example, the Instagram App is available from both Google Play Store and the Galaxy Store.  If I install Instagram from Google Play, Malwarebytes reports a clean scan upon installation.  If I install from Galaxy Store, Malwarebytes does not report the scan upon installation at all (whereas both Bitdefender and Digital Secure show it to have been scanned).

Thanks for the continued investigation!

Having same issue with premium. At first I thought because was free version, so I upgraded. It will only scan apps, and no files. Whole scan maybe 30 seconds.

Hi Everyone,

Our dev team is looking into the file scanning issue, and should be resolved in our next release.

@AndroidS9User, we are looking into the Galaxy Store issue as well.
