Hi,

I'm not sure if this is correct place to post.  I bought this laptop computer in 2016, but didn't start using it regularly until 2019/2020.  In 2019 from about April until July, I used it for a part-time work-from-home survey job.  Then, early this year I started using it exclusively when Windows 7 became obsolete.

The laptop runs slow, and this isn't something that started after an update.  It just seems to keep getting slower.  Sometimes it seems particularly slow when using the internet or specific websites (like FaceBook, etc).  Btw, I usually use MS Edge browser.  Rarely do I use the Chrome browser.  When I had that survey job last year, I had to use Firefox, which has since been deleted from this computer.  Other times, the computer is slow in opening apps or files...or even slow to open task manager when I hit 'CTRL' + 'ALT' + 'DELETE'.

I know there are a lot of MS apps on my computer that I don't even use.  Not sure if they have anything to do with it.  And, I don't know for sure how to ensure my non-MS apps are up-to-date.  I used to use Avast (not premium, just free), and it would notify me if an app was out-of-date.

My previous laptop with the Windows 7 (and way less storage, etc) ran much faster.  Could you either help me figure this out, or send me to a more appropriate forum/website?  And after this issue is resolved, are there guidelines for Windows 10 settings?

Thank you, Julie

  • Please attach the Additions.txt log to your reply as well.

Thanks

The Malwarebytes report is attached.  When the adwcleaner was finished scanning, there was no "clean & repair" option.  So, I didn't proceed with your directions after that.  Attached are the adwcleaner report and a snip of the screen after the scan was finished.  Note: It says there are 33 results, but only showed me the few in the snip.  It says at the top of that screen "2/2".  I could not find a way to look at "1/2".

Please advise.

Thank you!

Hi,  Just wanted you to know I did not have time to look at the computer yet.  I had to get an application in, and my old printer was out of ink.  So, I had already purchased another and was just trying to use the ink.  In the process, I have now downloaded the software, etc for the new printer.  And eventually will delete all HP software.

At any rate, I will look at this after work in about 8 hours.  IF your instructions have changed at all based on the new printer install, please let me know.

Thank you

What exactly is mDNSResponder.exe? aka Bonjour

https://www.groovypost.com/howto/howto/what-is-mdnsresponder-exe-and-why-is-it-running/

MDNSResponder, also known as Bonjour, is Apple’s native zero-configuration networking process for Mac that was ported over to Windows and associated with MDNSNSP.DLL.  On a Mac or iOS device, this program is used for networking nearly everything.  On Windows, this process is only necessary for sharing libraries via iTunes and other Mac applications like the Apple TV that were ported to Windows.  Bonjour allows different computers running iTunes to communicate with each other regardless of network configuration, this is because it enables automatic network discovery.

What Is mDNSResponder.exe / Bonjour and How Can I Uninstall or Remove It?
https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/6456/what-is-mdnsresponder.exe-bonjour-and-how-can-i-uninstall-or-remove-it/

Unless you specifically use or need it, I would recommend that you uninstall Bonjour

CCleaner most experts recommend no longer using it but you can make up your own mind

https://www.howtogeek.com/172820/beginner-geek-what-does-ccleaner-do-and-should-you-use-it/

Please download the attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop.
NOTE. It's important that both files, FRST or FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on this particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system.

Run FRST or FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.
If the tool needs a restart please make sure you let the system restart normally and let the tool complete its run after restart.
The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please attach or post it to your next reply.

Note: If the tool warned you about an outdated version please download and run the updated version.

fixlist.txt

Thanks

  • 2 weeks later...

I wasn't sure if the topic was still open, but glad it is.  I've been so busy with work, and the computer did work well for a few days.  Now, is slow again.  Not like before, but slower than it should take to load a website or even open a file from my documents.

Anything I should check, to see why the system is slow now?

Thank you,

Attached are the documents you requested.

Also- I had switched printers a couple of weeks ago.  New one is a Brother printer.  I tried to delete all HP related software, as my old printer is the only HP product I ever had.  One HP app would not let me uninstall it.  I'll attach a snip of the error message it gave me.

And, in trying to clean up my apps, I found a couple of apps that looked like games.  They said installed on 5/24/20.  I do not play games on my computer, and I certainly did not download anything today.  On the one app, before I uninstalled, I noticed it mentioned king.com.  I've never heard of this site, and I am not going to the site to check it out.  Is there some kind of malware that is installing this?

Thank you!

Not sure about reinstall. Does Garmin install Ads or shortcuts or games?

The logs are not showing any obvious infections.

Take a look at the following topic and I'd highly recommend you install uBlock Origins and Malwarebytes Browser Guard

https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/258363-tips-to-help-protect-from-infection/

For a few day, try right click on Malwarebytes tray incon and uncheck the Web Protection module. See if speed improves any and let me know.

No problem. Microsoft is scaling out  the updates so it might be a while before it's offered.

The one you did was just a minor update for some micro code

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4497165/kb4497165-intel-microcode-updates

How is the computer running now?

Computer seems to run okay.  Just updated/installed KB2267602.  Still no "Windows 10 known as 2004 build."

Is there any way to know when the computer will start an update?  I feel like when the laptop is really slow, that there is some big process or download and the computer basically won't let me do anything for several minutes.  Sometimes, I shut the computer down manually.  I don't know how to prevent it from that state of literally doing nothing, whether trying to close a tab or open task manager, etc.

Thank you
