Latest version of 'never expires' Malwarebytes Premium ?

Recommended Posts

When we Open Malwarebytes we are getting a message: "Support for this version of Malwarebytes ends on May 4, 2020.  Update to the latest version for free."
W10 Control Panel indicates our current version of Malwarebytes Premium is 3.7.1.2839.
Where do we find a description for the 'latest version' ?
And will the usage of the latest 'premium' version be free per our current 'never expires' subscription ?
Please advise.
Thank you

Hi,

Thanks for posting in the Malwarebytes for Windows Help forum.

If you are having technical issues with our Windows product, please do the following:

Malwarebytes Support Tool - Advanced Options

This feature is designed for the following reasons:

  • For use when you are on the forums and need to provide logs for assistance
  • For use when you don't need or want to create a ticket with Malwarebytes
  • For use when you want to perform local troubleshooting on your own

How to use the Advanced Options:

Spoiler
  1. Download Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Double-click mb-support-X.X.X.XXXX.exe to run the program
    • You may be prompted by User Account Control (UAC) to allow changes to be made to your computer. Click Yes to consent.
  3. Place a checkmark next to Accept License Agreement and click Next
  4. Navigate to the Advanced tab
  5. The Advanced menu page contains four categories:
    • Gather Logs: Collects troubleshooting information from the computer. As part of this process, Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) is run to perform a complete diagnosis. The information is saved to a file on the Desktop named mbst-grab-results.zip and can be added as an email attachment or uploaded to a forum post to assist with troubleshooting the issue at hand.
    • Clean: Performs an automated uninstallation of all Malwarebytes products installed to the computer and prompts to install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows afterwards. The Premium license key is backed up and reinstated. All user configurations and other data are removed. This process requires a reboot.
    •  Repair System: Includes various system-related repairs in case a Windows service is not functioning correctly that Malwarebytes for Windows is dependent on. It is not recommended to use any Repair System options unless instructed by a Malwarebytes Support agent.
    • Anonymously help the community by providing usage and threat statistics: Unchecking this option will prevent Malwarebytes Support Tool from sending anonymous telemetry data on usage of the program.
  6. To provide logs for review click the Gather Logs button
  7. Upon completion, click OK
  8. A file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your Desktop
  9. Please attach the file in your next reply.
  10. To uninstall all Malwarebytes Products, click the Clean button.
  11. Click the Yes button to proceed.
  12. Save all your work and click OK when you are ready to reboot.
  13. After the reboot, you will have the option to re-install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows.
  14. Select Yes to install Malwarebytes.
  15. Malwarebytes for Windows will open once the installation completes successfully.

Lifetime never expires and is good for ALL future versions.

Thanks much for the info !

We used the update button suggested and the installation started; during which there were several popups along the way asking about 'install now'.
We clicked on them and it appears version 4.1.0.56 was installed successfully.

The 'Settings' menu indicates notification of 'version updates' when available, which we assume we are then able to decide when to install.
Is there a way to get notification of 'threat intelligence updates' for choose when to install ?

We are just a bit leery of auto anything on the internet these days.
For example we are still trying to find a program to control W10 updates like we were able to do with W7 in order help prevent updates that cause problems if updated too soon or at all.

Thanks again for your help.

Hello @akm

This would be my suggestion to get the latest version

RESTART the computer first.

Please do the following Uninstall and reinstall Malwarebytes using the Malwarebytes Support Tool

Please have lots of patience with the tool.  The first phase is a cleanup and does require a Windows Restart.
After the Restart, it may take 2 - 3 - 4 minutes till the Support tool screen shows up.   Please be patient and have faith.  Wait for it, whatever it takes.
The 2nd phase is where it offers to do a new Install.

Let me know if that clears up the issue or not.

Thanks

Unfortunately there is no way to get notifications about definition/signature updates, and they are generally released 10 or more times per day.  That said, Malwarebytes does have extensive protections and validation processes in place to guard against any kind of major false positive.  You could disable auto-updates and check for updates manually, however I wouldn't recommend it as you'd obviously often end up with at least partially out of date signatures/protection (unless you checked very frequently, which would be quite inconvenient).

Thank you for the clarification.

Under 'Application updates' we have 'Automatically download and install updates' OFF; and 'Notify me when a new version becomes available' ON.
Am assuming that means we are able to choose when we download and install 'version' updates ?

But am not able to find a place where disabling 'definition/signature updates' is possible.
Where should we look ?

If we disabled Mbam definitions auto updates we would probably update daily.
Thanks again.

OK.

This one will Nag you to death. Turn it off if you actually. want to control it. Subscribe to the release thread instead.

Personally as just an user. Not keeping up with versions automatically makes it in my personal opinion a waste of your money (you have a lifetime key)and reduces protection significantly.

As a dedicated user and a technician, who supports over 400+  home user computers, of which absolutely none of them have ever had an issue due to a Windows update automatic or otherwise....

But if you have to, Update mini tool

I am NOT endorsing the above program because I would never use it or any one like it. (use due diligence)

You can Pause Win 10 updates for up to a 35 days at a time now. (If your Win 10 is the latest version).

In Update and Security there is a one click button for a 7 day pause, or go to advanced options to set the pause for up to 35 days at a time.

Thanks for the info !

After receiving your post we found a user guide at https://support.malwarebytes.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038984693-Malwarebytes-for-Windows-guide-v4.

It seems helpful and describes the 'Security' tab options (as you described) to turn off/on auto database update.

Also it indicates at the 'General' tab and 'Application updates', the 'Check for updates' button will check for version and database updates.

And at the 'Security' tab, it indicates the 'Automatically check' (if left on) for database updates timing can be set for minutes, hours or days.  We tried that and updates did limit to our test setting of 3hrs.

Also, at the 'About' tab and 'Version Information' there is:
1 - 'Malwarebytes version',
2 - 'Update package version',
3 - 'Component package version'.
And under that list is another 'Check for updates' button for version and database updates.
Which one of those 3 is the 'database version' ?

Btw, any idea if a pdf version of that user guide is available ?

And Thanks again for your help !

Every time I manually click check for updates I get any and all updates available including the two biggest items you turned off. Since you have decided to turn everything off. You probably not want to click those in case I happen to be correct.

No there is not.

The update button below seems to check all updates. I would have to turn mine off to test (not going to happen) to really be sure.

There is a item in the right click menu of the tray icon that "might" do as you want.

There are database updates just about every hour. So reducing it from the default of hourly diminishes the protection. Also makes the updates larger when it catches up.

The Update package version is the database/signature version.  Unfortunately there is no offline/PDF version of the documentation, it is only available online for the moment.
