Hi guys, I was wondering if someone could give me a hand with a Trojan problem. Nosirrah gave me a hand last week to remove trojan.agent off my computer but it seem like it is not completely gone because my Norton Internet Security is still blocking attacks. He had said something about xcllsx.exe maybe being the problem and I thought he removed it but it looks like it is still on my computer as per the HijackThis log.

I have run a MBAM scan just now after an update and it comes up with nothing. I have the paid version of MBAM and it has not decect anything with its real time proctection. Does anybody see anything out of the ordinary here?

Thank you for your help

Here is the MBAM log:

Hi,

mbam should detect this one though... because definitions for this one was added a week ago. But I have a feeling your Windows Defender is interfering here. That's why, I want you to turn it off for now.

To turn real-time protection off

Open Windows Defender. (Click Start, click Programs, and then click Windows Defender.)

Click Tools, and then click General Settings.

Under Real-time protection options, Uncheck the Turn on real-time protection (recommended) check box.

Then click Save.

When your hijackthislog is clean again, please turn on the realtime protection again.

First of all, please update MalwareBytes, because the databaseversion is outdated.

  • Start MalwareBytes and click the Update tab. There click "Check for updates"
  • Once the updates are downloaded, perform a quick scan again.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log, then we'll proceed from there with new steps.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Hi Mieke, thanks for the reply.

I could not follow your instructions on how to open Windows Defender because I am running Vista. Instead, I found it in the control panel. When I clicked on it a box appeared which said that Windows Defender is turned off, and it asked me if I would like to turn it on - I said no. So it appears that WD is off.

I updated MBAM and did another scan which found nothing. I will post that and the HJT log here:

Hi,

No wonder the logs are confusing... You're posting the same Hijackthislog everytime

Scan saved at 8:49:10 PM, on 9/18/2009

;)

Please rightclick HijackThis and select to run as administrator. This is an important step otherwise it won't overwrite the older log.

Then click scan and let let scan. Then click save log. Windows will give a warning if you want to overwrite the existing log, please allow and let Windows overwrite the log.

Then post the new log in your next reply.

Hi,

This log makes a lot more sense, because this entry was present in the log before:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [zmmclr] C:\Windows\system32\xcllsx.exe

And I know mbam deletes that file and key in the registry, so since mbam scan came up clean afterwards, above entry should be gone in your log, and it is. ;)

How are things now?

Well, Nosirrah helped me out around a week and a half ago and he also noticed:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [zmmclr] C:\Windows\system32\xcllsx.exe

He got me to update MBAM and it did find something new, which it deleted. I assume it was the xcllsx.exe. My computer seemed fine for a couple of days, however, my Norton IS would periodically start notifying me that it had blocked a trojan attempts and backdoor.trojan attempts. It would quarantine the trojans after it would detect them. When I looked at the detailes, the files are always called 250.exe or 032.exe, etc (always three numbers followed by .exe - numbers always change though). Each instance there would be between one and six files quarantined. That lasted for about three or four days, during that time MBAM never detected anything. I have since had no notifications from Norton for the past two days, however, I have not done anything to attempt to remove what was on my computer.

Any ideas?

Okay, sounds great ;)

I guess the numbered .exe files were just sitting in the background designed to run at later dates in the future I imagine?

Things have been okay for a couple of days now so hopefully it stays that way. If not, I'll let you know.

Thanks for your help, it is appreciated!

Glad I could help. ;)

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.

And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.

Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!
