Adaware Web Protection

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I downloaded an updated version of a free youtube downloader I'd used with no problems in the past, but this time it also downloaded something else called ''Web Companion'' without my permission.  Web Companion looked a bit dodgy so I uninstalled it and also ran Malwarebytes before and after installation.  The items cleared are on the attached log.

I was hoping someone could help me check if my laptop is definitely safe now.

Thanks

Hello @Stewwart

Let's go ahead and do a bit more scanning and get some logs to double-check.

Please run the following steps and post back the logs as an attachment when ready.

STEP 01

  • If you're already running Malwarebytes then open Malwarebytes and check for updates. Then click on the Scan tab and select Threat Scan and click on Start Scan button.
  • If you don't have Malwarebytes installed yet please download it from here and install it.
  • Once installed then open Malwarebytes and select Scan and let it run.
  • Once the scan is completed click on the View Report button, then the Export button and save the file as a Text file to your desktop or other location you can find and attach that log on your next reply.
  • If Malwarebytes won't run then please skip to the next step and let me know in your next reply.

STEP 02

Please download AdwCleaner by Malwarebytes and save the file to your Desktop.

  • Right-click on the program and select RunAsAdmin.jpg Run as Administrator to start the tool.
  • Accept the Terms of use.
  • Wait until the database is updated.
  • Click Scan Now.
  • When finished, please click Clean & Repair.
  • Your PC should reboot now if any items were found.
  • After reboot, a log file will be opened. Attach or Copy its content into your next reply.

RESTART THE COMPUTER Before running Step 3

STEP 03
Please download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens, click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). If you've, run the tool before you need to place a checkmark here.
  • Please attach the Additions.txt log to your reply as well.

Thanks

Hi,

I've attached the logs I was able to run. There were 2 for Adwcleaner so I've just attached them both just in case it matters.

When I tried to run Farbar from my desktop the laptop said - ''this app can't run on your PC.  To find a version for your PC check with software publisher'' .  Could use something else?

Thanks

Stewart

Thank you @Stewwart

Please restart the computer and then run the FRST program and attach back both of the new log files. It is quite late for me so unless you post back those logs very soon I'll need to check them for you when I get back to work again tomorrow.

Thank you

You need to temporarily disable Smart Screen and Bullguard AV when you run this fix. You need FRST to be on the Desktop saved along with this file otherwise the fix will not work.

https://www.howtogeek.com/75356/how-to-turn-off-or-disable-the-smartscreen-filter-in-windows-8/

Please download the attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop.
NOTE. It's important that both files, FRST or FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on this particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system.

Run FRST or FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.
If the tool needs a restart please make sure you let the system restart normally and let the tool complete its run after restart.
The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please attach or post it to your next reply.

Note: If the tool warned you about an outdated version please download and run the updated version.

I'm going to be heading off to bed. After the fix above please follow the directions in the following topic and let me know how things are working now.

I'll check back on you again in the morning sometime.

Hi there,

I've attached the fixlist log.

I realised that I had been running IE7 which is out of date but with it set up so that a google page came up automatically.  So I downloaded chrome to see if that would maybe sort the issue and allow the green safe ticks to appear but sadly it didn't.  I managed to set up my google account and imported my existing list of IE7 bookmarks.  Then I got stuck.  Somehow I've managed to pause the sync (per attached) and I can't get rid of it, and I couldn't find the reset sync.  Sorry to be a pest.

Thanks

You just need to sign back into Google Chrome and in the Settings you can go to the Advanced section at the bottom, then click the RESET SYNC at the bottom.

It looks like Windows found some corrupted files but was not able to correct all of them.

DISM was also unable to correct it as it couldn't download due to an error. Please review the following page and see if you can get DISM to run on your system to repair it.

That's okay. If you got DISM working maybe I can get it to do what we want.

SFC and DISM are both tools from Microsoft designed to fix, repair invalid or corrupted operating system files so you don't end up having to reinstall Windows when some things are broken.

Possibly if you're able to zip them up and upload. But let's go ahead and see if we can have you download a Windows 8.1 ISO image to use to help us too.

Please download a single language x64 ISO image of Windows 8.1

Please see if this link works to allow you to save the file to your computer.

https://software-download.microsoft.com/sg/Win8.1_SingleLang_English_x64.iso?t=f6813d4f-8d59-43d6-8801-7b3d0aba707f&e=1587766175&h=a646d7c262d2a46f32af2299672c8511

See if you can right click over the link and select Save-As

All good I review the logs that I wanted to see.

I don't think we'll actually need the USB disk at this point, but potentially later on. For now please go to the following site and download Windows 8.1 (which is what I believe you're running here) and let me know where you save the file to.
