Can't get rid of Softonic PUP

Recommended Posts

Hello, this PUP.Optional.SofTonicAssistant keeps coming back and is lagging my whole laptop every time. I used Adwcleaner to remove it, but it comes back after a few days. Malwarebytes hasn't detected it. Anyone know what i can do? I was told to post my results here :)

THANK YOU!!! ❤️

Hello @ocmone and :welcome:

Your computer has a few issue. First off you have old compromised versions of Java on the computer. Please go to Control Panel, Programs, Add/Remove and uninstall the following software. If you're doing Java programming then you should try to always stay on the very latest version if possible.

Avast Secure Browser
Java 10.0.2
Java 8 Update 131
Java 8 Update 151
Java(TM) SE Development Kit 10.0.2

Not related, but noticed since I also use Keepass - your version is 4 builds behind.
KeePass Password Safe is now on 2.44   https://keepass.info/news/n200120_2.44.html

Your VLC Media Player is also way behind in version.

The use of TunnelBear, uTorrent and other similar peer2peer software used for sharing are themselves not illegal to have and use but sharing software, music, etc that you don't own is illegal and a good way to allow an infection into your system. I'd recommend you consider not using such software.

Wow, can't believe anyone is still using something this old. Up to you but the Windows 10 built-in search is pretty darn good nowadays
HKLM-x32\...\Run: [Google Desktop Search] => C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exe [30192 2015-01-30] (Google Inc -> Google)

Ever since Avast bought CCleaner most Experts are not too keen on using it anymore

HKU\S-1-5-21-2086725182-3724228025-506963172-1001\...\Run: [CCleaner Smart Cleaning] => C:\Program Files\CCleaner\CCleaner64.exe [24552064 2019-10-14] (Piriform Software Ltd -> Piriform Ltd)

You're using Avast which is dug in like a tick into your Google Chrome browser (that has pieces of it that are way out of date) My advice, for now, would be to fully remove Avast antivirus at least temporarily and use the built-in Windows Defender antivirus until we get your system cleaned.

Do some research on the Avast browser issue that's been in the news recently. We just want to get a clean slate and go from there until the computer is cleaned up.

Please uninstall Avast using the Control Panel, Programs, Add/Remove - then after a reboot run their clean up utility to remove leftover items.

I'd recommend a full removal of all Google software but I see you're using quite a bit of it so that might be a bit drastic for you. For now please do the following clean up for Google Chrome though

How to Back Up and Restore Your Chrome Bookmarks Locally

How to export your saved passwords from Chrome

If you are saving passwords in Google Chrome I highly suggest not doing so. That is not a secure method of storing passwords. Use your Keepass

Once you've done the above then please do the following in the exact order provided.

Please run the following steps and post back the logs as an attachment when ready.

  • If you're already running Malwarebytes then open Malwarebytes and check for updates. Then click on the Scan tab and select Threat Scan and click on Start Scan button.
  • If you don't have Malwarebytes installed yet please download it from here and install it.
  • Once installed then open Malwarebytes and select Scan and let it run.
  • Once the scan is completed click on the View Report button, then the Export button and save the file as a Text file to your desktop or other location you can find and attach that log on your next reply.
  • If Malwarebytes won't run then please skip to the next step and let me know in your next reply.

Please download AdwCleaner by Malwarebytes and save the file to your Desktop.

  • Right-click on the program and select RunAsAdmin.jpg Run as Administrator to start the tool.
  • Accept the Terms of use.
  • Wait until the database is updated.
  • Click Scan Now.
  • When finished, please click Clean & Repair.
  • Your PC should reboot now if any items were found.
  • After reboot, a log file will be opened. Attach or Copy its content into your next reply.

RESTART THE COMPUTER Before running Step 3

Please download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens, click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). If you've, run the tool before you need to place a checkmark here.
  • Please attach the Additions.txt log to your reply as well.

OMG, it worked! I did everything you said in that exact order, and the problem is not coming back as usual. All logs are looking good now.

It is absolutely amazing to me how much effort you have put into analysing my specific case and even give me additional security advice not directly related to my problem.

Next thing for me is buy the premium version of Malwarebytes.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Have a great day and stay healthy!

Well we're not really done at this point unless you don't want to continue. I need to get the logs back so that I can review for any further possible updates, changes, or recommendations @ocmone
