Please try installing Malwarebytes using the offline installer found here and let us know if that resolves the issue or not.

Hi @jerimiah124bullfrog,

Your issue is being caused by the following proxy configuration:

ProxyEnable: [.DEFAULT] => Proxy is enabled.
ProxyServer: [.DEFAULT] => http=127.0.0.1:14118;https=127.0.0.1:14118


Do you recognise this? Do you know where it came from?

Installation of Malwarebytes will be possible once this is removed (or with use of the offline installer mentioned above).

Good morning,

Thank you for the assistance.  I do not recognize this Proxy setting or know why its there.  

I was able to run the offline installer and run a scan.  Will this remove that Proxy setting?

Okay, looks like its manual proxy is turned off there.

I'm getting a message in the notification center to turn on my Virus Scan, but it looks like its running.   If I click on any of the 'Turn on Now' buttons, it just takes me to 'C:\WINDOWS\system32' folder.

Okay, I have moved your topic to the malware removal section of the forum so I can provide you with one-on-one support. Let's scan your system for any malware and review to see if any Windows fixes may be in order as well.

 

Please run the following steps and post back the logs as an attachment when ready.

STEP 01

  • If you're already running Malwarebytes then open Malwarebytes and check for updates. Then click on the Scan tab and select Threat Scan and click on Start Scan button.
  • If you don't have Malwarebytes installed yet please download it from here and install it.
  • Once installed then open Malwarebytes and select Scan and let it run.
  • Once the scan is completed click on the View Report button, then the Export button and save the file as a Text file to your desktop or other location you can find and attach that log on your next reply.
  • If Malwarebytes won't run then please skip to the next step and let me know in your next reply.

STEP 02

Please download AdwCleaner by Malwarebytes and save the file to your Desktop.

  • Right-click on the program and select RunAsAdmin.jpg Run as Administrator to start the tool.
  • Accept the Terms of use.
  • Wait until the database is updated.
  • Click Scan Now.
  • When finished, please click Clean & Repair.
  • Your PC should reboot now if any items were found.
  • After reboot, a log file will be opened. Attach or Copy its content into your next reply.

 

RESTART THE COMPUTER Before running Step 3

STEP 03
Please download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens, click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). If you've, run the tool before you need to place a checkmark here.
  • Please attach the Additions.txt log to your reply as well.

The logs indicate that you did not tell Malwarebytes to remove what it found. I would highly suggest you allow Malwarebytes to remove and quarantine what it finds. Any software you think you want would be best to find a safer variant or other solution for.

Please run Malwarebytes again, do a threat scan and this time allow it to remove what it finds.

Then we'll reboot and run another FRST scan to see if anything else was missed or not.

Just noticed another issue, windows is apparently unable to install Security Update for Windows 8.1 (KB3172729).  Ran the windows update troubleshooter, apparently something is corrupt.  (Apologies, its my son's computer)

Recommend no longer using the following program: CCleaner

Please go to Control Panel, Programs, Add / Remove and uninstall Java - you have an old compromised version. If at all possible try to use the computer without Java.

The same for Real Player. If you're not actively using it or even know what it is I'd recommend uninstalling it. There are better players if needed but most content today is mainly HTML5, .MP4 container based.

Programs to uninstall:

Bonjour
CCleaner
Java
RealPlayer

Then restart the computer one more time and run the following fix below. It will attempt to scan and repair missing or corrupt Windows files as well as remove some invalid or bad or ancient software.

I'm going to remove Log Me In driver and launch settings as they are from 2014. If you really want them then please download and install fresh drivers once we're done here.

 

 

Please download the attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop.
NOTE. It's important that both files, FRST or FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on this particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system.

Run FRST or FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.
If the tool needs a restart please make sure you let the system restart normally and let the tool complete its run after restart.
The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please attach or post it to your next reply.

Note: If the tool warned you about an outdated version please download and run the updated version.

Okay, something blocked the Windows scanning tools from downloading to repair some found corrupt files.

Please download MiniToolBox save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following check-boxes:

  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files


Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using Reset FF Proxy Settings option Firefox should be closed.
