Email service providers domains listed in hphosts

Recommended Posts

I recently deployed a Pi-hole to block ads in my home network.

I am surprised to find that I can no longer access the websites of many email service providers, such as Campaign Monitor (www.campaignmonitor.com) or Mailchimp (www.mailchimp.com). ExactTarget is also included in the blocking, but SendGrid, for example, is not.

I don't think the business websites of these companies host any ad content directly - they've got separate domains to do that on.

Of course, there is always the option of removing hphosts from the (default) configuration of my Pi-hole, but I think the matter deserves at least a discussion. I do not work for any such company, but I work in a field where I need to consult these services and their offering frequently.

Often such domains will be blocked for advertising and tracking so that could be the reason for the blocks, though you may search hpHosts database on the hosts-file.net site to check the classifications for sites which are blocked.
