Slow And Unstable Internet Connection Speeds

Recommended Posts

Greetings,

I am a longtime user of Malwarebytes Premium, and over the last couple of months have been encountering severe issues with my system's internet connection speed. It started over the last couple of months, and has only gotten progressively worse. Further, the system seems to be having trouble performing rudimentary tasks when the task manager indicates it has sufficient resources to perform said tasks. For example, Excel is telling me that it does not have enough storage space or RAM to open a new workbook, while the task manager indicates only 50% of my RAM is being used. If I try using Speccy to load the system's system specs, after 30 minutes it has not successfully fully loaded the system specs.

I want to know if malware has infested my system, or if some other software / hardware faults are disrupting its functioning. It took the system 20 minutes to download Farbar Recovery Scan, and the scan tool hangs when it begins Scanning Other Areas.

I have attached the logs up to the point it gets to before it crashes.

Also, Malwarebyte's settings keep changing by themselves. Under the Advanced Security options, the default enables Dynamic anti-heap spraying protection. This is continually being disabled periodically, and I have to reenable it by clicking restore defaults.

Hello @Travian

Sorry for the delay. Please temporarily uninstall the following software. Go to Control Panel, Programs, Add/Remove

Avast Free Antivirus
ZoneAlarm Free Firewall
ZoneAlarm Security

You're on Windows 10 which has built-in Windows Defender and you're also running Malwarebytes Premium so the computer will have protection without these other applications.

After you've removed those applications and rebooted, Please run the following steps and post back the logs as an attachment when ready.

STEP 01

  • If you're already running Malwarebytes then open Malwarebytes and check for updates. Then click on the Scan tab and select Threat Scan and click on Start Scan button.
  • If you don't have Malwarebytes installed yet please download it from here and install it.
  • Once installed then open Malwarebytes and select Scan and let it run.
  • Once the scan is completed click on the View Report button, then the Export button and save the file as a Text file to your desktop or other location you can find and attach that log on your next reply.
  • If Malwarebytes won't run then please skip to the next step and let me know in your next reply.

STEP 02

Please download AdwCleaner by Malwarebytes and save the file to your Desktop.

  • Right-click on the program and select RunAsAdmin.jpg Run as Administrator to start the tool.
  • Accept the Terms of use.
  • Wait until the database is updated.
  • Click Scan Now.
  • When finished, please click Clean & Repair.
  • Your PC should reboot now if any items were found.
  • After reboot, a log file will be opened. Attach or Copy its content into your next reply.

RESTART THE COMPUTER Before running Step 3

STEP 03
Please download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens, click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). If you've, run the tool before you need to place a checkmark here.
  • Please attach the Additions.txt log to your reply as well.

Thanks

Please download the attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop.
NOTE. It's important that both files, FRST or FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on this particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system.

Run FRST or FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.
If the tool needs a restart please make sure you let the system restart normally and let the tool complete its run after restart.
The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please attach or post it to your next reply.

Note: If the tool warned you about an outdated version please download and run the updated version.

Thanks

Greetings,

I went through and removed all of the files you requested, then ran FRST as instructed. The resulting fixlog is attached.

I'm sorry. My fault. I thought I asked you to run the scan again.

Please go ahead and run a NEW scan with FRST and make sure to get a new Additions.txt log as well and post those back. I'll check back on you again in the morning

Overall the logs look pretty good now.

How is the computer running?

Are there any other obvious issues or concerns ?

Please click on Start and type in "Check for updates" and run that and let Windows check for any updates that might be required.

The system appears to be performing better. Although I do still have trouble loading some webpages from time to time. Also, Malwarebytes is consistently having trouble connecting to the update servers still, which worries me.

Just out of curiosity, what were the key things that have been done to the system? Based on the Fixit log, it seems we ran the SFC to look for operating system errors (which were found and fixed), flushed the dns, rebuilt the TCP/IP system, checked the disk for flawed sectors, and cleared out a series of adware files. Were any obvious infections observed?

Also, is it normal for Malwarebytes to interpret FRST as randsomware? Because when I tried to download and run it from the website you linked, Malwarebytes quarantined it. I downloaded it a second time from the website you linked, ran it, and Malwarebytes detected no traces of Malware. I've attached the log from the detection here.

I see. I was not aware that Windows 10 had recently released a version into the wild that lead to internet connectivity problems for some applications. While my internet connection still is occasionally slow and buggy, it is not world ending.

If the problem persists or gets worse I will be back in touch.

Thanks!

Sounds good. I'll go ahead and close your topic but if you do decide you need further help please let us know. I'll also leave you with some information to help you better protect your privacy and data. No rush, take your time to read but make sure you also review the videos on how to use or setup some of this if you do decide to implement changes.

If you're not backing up your data and you're still using Google Chrome then you're just not serious about Privacy, Safety, and protecting your data. Malwarebytes is a fantastic program but you still need to back up your data and you still need to block scripts and Ads in your browser.
If you're still using Google Chrome I would highly suggest you consider using Firefox instead. For more advanced users you might consider installing NoScript as well (it does have a higher learning curve though)
