PUP.Optional.Legacy returns all the time

Recommended Posts

I have seen numerous users report this PUP coming back time after time.

I don't use Chrome anymore, I'll remove it with Revo Uninstall after the removal of this pesky thing.

Sync isn't turned on for Chrome.

Here's the log file of AdwCleaner:

Perhaps this is also interfering with Edge (which I don't use either).

Hello @Purity8

These are not Chrome entries alone that could be causing this. Let me have you run the following please and we'll see about getting the computer cleaned up.

Please run the following steps and post back the logs as an attachment when ready.

STEP 01

  • If you're already running Malwarebytes then open Malwarebytes and check for updates. Then click on the Scan tab and select Threat Scan and click on Start Scan button.
  • If you don't have Malwarebytes installed yet please download it from here and install it.
  • Once installed then open Malwarebytes and select Scan and let it run.
  • Once the scan is completed click on the View Report button, then the Export button and save the file as a Text file to your desktop or other location you can find and attach that log on your next reply.
  • If Malwarebytes won't run then please skip to the next step and let me know in your next reply.

STEP 02

RESTART THE COMPUTER Before running Step 2

Please download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens, click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). If you've, run the tool before you need to place a checkmark here.
  • Please attach the Additions.txt log to your reply as well.

Thanks

I've attached the Malwarebytes Scan log (which is clean of threats).

I was unable to run Farbar Recovery Scan Tool the first time around as Windows Defender's SmartScreen blocked it. I've disabled it and will post shortly when the scans complete.

You have a huge amount of add-ons in Firefox. We'll try this cleanup but you may end up having to clean up Firefox.

Please download the attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop.
NOTE. It's important that both files, FRST or FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on this particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system.

Run FRST or FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.
If the tool needs a restart please make sure you let the system restart normally and let the tool complete its run after restart.
The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please attach or post it to your next reply.

Note: If the tool warned you about an outdated version please download and run the updated version.

fixlist.txt

Thanks

Yeah, I was testing these add-ons. I've had FireFox Nightly (v74 at the time) on some of these profiles, but downgraded back to default FireFox (v72 or so). I wasn't able to use those profiles until now that FireFox has officially caught up.

I will clean that up along with organizing history into "Multi-Account Containers".

Here's the Fixlog.

The tool also made a zip file that contains Quarantine items. Would it be wise to just delete it?

Okay the log looks good. You can delete the zip file of quarantine files. It was made in case we needed to review anything.

Hopefully this helped with the issue but again it may be due to the Firefox issue. Does the scan only show under Firefox clean up?

Okay.

Nope, seems to only apply to Chrome (unless I'm wrong in this matter). Every time Chrome updates; they all come back.

I've used FireFox (it has always been my default) much longer than Chrome altogether. I saw extensions that were in Chrome I could use that weren't found on FireFox.

If this is referring to Google Chrome's Sync, I didn't use this function.

I have only tried using FireFox sync a few times but, I don't use it anymore either.

There are multiple other cleaning procedures that have nothing to do with Sync. Please run the other clean up routines and let me know.

You can also try the following method to clean up Google Chrome

Chrome
Reset Chrome back to defaults to completely clear out issues with Chrome.

  • Open Chrome and at the top right, click ellipse.png.2829aeeb2aea006bc956de077091and then More tools and then Extensions
  • Write down the list of Extensions installed.
  • Next, go to >> Google Sync << and sign into your account. Make sure you know your password as this will clear it from the browser.
  • Scroll down until you see the  reset_chrome_sync.png "reset sync" button to clear your data from the server and remove your passphrase.
  • Now, close all Chrome windows. Chrome cannot be running for the next step. If needed, print this information or use another browser to read the information.
  • Press the Windows key + R at the same time, to bring up the Run dialog box.

    • run_command.png

  • Type in (or copy/paste) the following and press Enter:     %localappdata%\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\
  1. Press Ctrl + A to select all the files and folders.
  2. Hold down Ctrl + A and click once on the files "Bookmarks" and "Bookmarks.bak". This will unselect them.
  3. With all the files selected (except for your Bookmarks), press the Delete key and click Yes to delete the files and folders.
  4. Example of all files and folders selected, except Bookmarks

chrome_files_folders.png.00938ead26fa2bd

Restart your computer now and make sure there are no longer any browser issues and let me know the results

I've tried opening Chrome & then running AdwCleaner, nothing has come up so far.

Then proceeded to only keep Bookmarks (which isn't that important, I've already imported them into FireFox yesterday) & restarted PC. Looks all good for now, I'm prepared to uninstall Chrome at any time.

When Chrome updates, I'll post back if they all come back.

I do have a script to completely remove Google Chrome if you want to run it. But it will remove ALL Google software not just Chrome.

If you're not backing up your data and you're still using Google Chrome then you're just not serious about Privacy, Safety, and protecting your data. Malwarebytes is a fantastic program but you still need to back up your data and you still need to block scripts and Ads in your browser.
If you're still using Google Chrome I would highly suggest you consider using Firefox instead. For more advanced users you might consider installing NoScript as well (it does have a higher learning curve though)

I have been using FireFox mostly (as I've mentioned time after time).

My PC does not have Google apps (at least not that I'm aware of; perhaps some others were installed without my knowledge). I only have Google Chrome as secondary browser. I won't mind if you'd provide me that script. Otherwise, I'd just remove Google Chrome with Revo Uninstaller & be done with it.

I have already been backuping my data since I've added an additional internal disk.

In addition, I'm already using Ublock Origin & KeePass (portable version through an USB). I also have ThunderBird installed for email & the built-in Mail & Calendar application.

I'm sorry but anything internal is not a real backup beyond having a possible resource for a deleted file as long as the computer is not infected. If your computer gets infected with any of the recent Ransomware attacks ALL disks that are accessible to you are accessible  to the malware and will be encrypted.

From the backup topic

It is also recommended that you do not keep the backup drive connected to the system all the time.  It should only be connected to do the backup and then once the backup has completed disconnect the drive.  The reason for this is that if your computer were to become infected and the backup drive was connected then the infection could potentially infect, delete, or encrypt your backup as well.

Sounds like you're at least much further along than many users. Information is simply to help improve that stance.

WARNING!!  To all readers except this user @Purity8

DO NOT use this script. This is a special fix designed to manually rip out EVERYTHING related to ALL Google software. There is no backup, no "are you sure". Once done it cannot be undone. ALL Google software will be forcefully removed from the computer.

Thanks
