Malwarebytes not registering in Windows Security sometimes.

Recommended Posts

Sometimes Malwarebytes doesn't register in Windows Security / Defender. I have the option turned on, and sometimes it doesn't register.

My computer falls asleep now. Everything is stable for me right now :) Thank you for working so hard Malwarebytes team.

Greetings,

I'm glad to hear that your system is otherwise stable, however it sounds like perhaps the Windows Security Center integration component in Malwarebytes isn't functioning properly.  If you would, please do the following so that we might investigate the issue:

  1. Download and run the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Accept the EULA and click Advanced tab on the left (not Start Repair)
  3. Click the Gather Logs button, and once it completes, attach the zip file it creates on your desktop to your next reply

Thanks

We generally prefer to work publicly here on the forums, however if you are greatly concerned about privacy you may contact Malwarebytes Support directly if you aren't comfortable posting logs in public.  With that said, we can probably correct this issue easily without necessarily needing any logs.  Please try the following first, and if the issue is corrected then don't worry about the logs, however if the issue still persists and we aren't able to help without collecting logs, you may then contact Support if needed.

First please try toggling the setting off/on for Malwarebytes to register in the Windows Security Center.  The setting can be found by clicking the small gear icon in the upper right area of the main Malwarebytes UI then selecting the Security tab and you should see it if you scroll down the list of items on that tab under an area titled Windows Security Center.

If that does not fix the issue then please try a quick repair using the Support Tool:

  1. Run the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Accept the EULA and click Start Repair
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions and restart your system if prompted to do so to complete the repair process and follow any instructions it provides on system restart if it needs to run the installer for Malwarebytes

Once that is done check to see if the issue is fixed, and if it still continues then please try a clean install to see if that corrects the problem:

  1. Download and run the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Accept the EULA and click Advanced tab on the left (not Start Repair)
  3. Click the Clean button, and allow it to restart your system and then reinstall Malwarebytes, either by allowing the tool to do so when it offers to on restart, or by downloading and installing the latest version from here

Please let us know how it goes and if the issue still continues or not.

Thanks

Sure, no problem.  Toggling the setting off/on again will probably correct it, with that said, if you would prefer to use Windows Defender that ships with Windows 10 alongside Malwarebytes then you should turn that option off, otherwise Defender will disable itself.

Personally I set all computers with that setting OFF so I can have Defender running as well.

What happens if you disable the option, restart the machine, then re-enable the option and restart the machine once more, does it see it then?

Of course, we have many customers who run Malwarebytes in combination with Windows Defender this way with great success as Porthos mentioned, so if you would prefer to run your system this way you may simply disable the option to prevent Malwarebytes from trying to register with the Windows Security Center so that Windows Defender will remain active alongside Malwarebytes.

I tried to turn the setting off and on. It still doesn't work. Defender doesn't see it.

When off Windows security center will not list it al all. That is what it should look like.

Below is what is seen when that setting is off in MB.

@Porthos Malwarebytes is not listed in Defender at all... The company Malwarebytes is not showing up in here, regardless if it's on... or off.

It sounds like the Security Center/Action Center integration component in Malwarebytes is not functioning at all if it never shows up.  To try to address that I would suggest trying the options I posted here and that will hopefully fix it.  If not then we may need to dive deeper and check logs to see what is going on with the machine.

Same for me as well... Tried switching off & on the button and also tried reinstalling Malwarebytes.... still won't register with security center.  😞

Seems like it stopped working after the latest windows update...

Greetings,

If you would, please do the following so that we may take a closer look at what is happening with your installation and hopefully determine what is causing this issue so that it may be fixed:

  1. Download and run the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Accept the EULA and click Advanced tab on the left (not Start Repair)
  3. Click the Gather Logs button, and once it completes, attach the zip file it creates on your desktop to your next reply

I'm not aware of any checkboxes except for the one on the EULA/agreement page which must be checked to proceed.  Beyond that I believe you just need to click the Start Repair button and it should handle the process automatically and provide instructions on anything you need to do once it finishes such as rebooting your system and allowing it to install the latest version once the system restarts.

I used the repair process, and it's still not registering in Windows Defender / Security Center... I did the repair process with the Official tool.

I have seen other Anti-virus software, that hardly ever has this problem. It seems like it's not up to me at this point.

The way that Windows Security Center/Action Center functions in Windows 10 is very different from previous Windows versions and how they handled registering security applications (including AVs, anti-spyware, firewalls etc.) and monitoring them.  It was far more passive previously, with security vendors simply needing to pass some basic validation testing through Microsoft and prove their efficacy for providing protection, then coding in the right data to write into certain system data files which were used for tracking the applications being monitored by Security Center/Action Center.  In 10 it's all much more closely tied to Defender and a slew of new components and functions, including I believe, the need for the security vendor to load a special application into memory which handles interfacing with the Security Center/Action Center (in Malwarebytes' case, this would be the MBAMWsc process I believe) so I don't know all that is involved in getting it working in 10, especially in the latest versions of 10 as there have been many changes to how such things work in the recent major updates for Windows 10 published by Microsoft.

Anyway, with all of that said, if you still prefer to leave it be then that's fine.  Malwarebytes is protecting your system and that's by far the most important thing.  Registering with Security Center/Action Center is a minor function at best and really doesn't impact how Malwarebytes works on your system or the protection it provides since you still have all of its protection modules active, and of course Malwarebytes will notify you if there are any issues such as your databases being too far out of date or any of its protections failing to run or stopping or when any threats have been detected by Malwarebytes so there isn't really anything significant as far as Malwarebytes' features go that you miss out on in not having it registered in the Security Center/Action Center.

For anyone still wishing to continue troubleshooting this issue, you are of course free to do so as we certainly want the software to work as intended, however the Developers for Malwarebytes will likely require some additional details about the systems and what is going on with them in order to try and track down a common cause and (hopefully) a fix, assuming the issue is something Malwarebytes has control over in their own code and it isn't some kind of Windows Update bug as a user above mentioned, which is certainly another possibility given Microsoft's recent track record, especially with AV/security software compatibility (users of some of the most common/prominent AV software products had to wait to install certain major Windows 10 updates due to incompatibilities with these very commonly used applications from major vendors).

To provide logs for troubleshooting, please do the following:

  1. Download and run the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Accept the EULA and click Advanced tab on the left (not Start Repair)
  3. Click the Gather Logs button, and once it completes, attach the zip file it creates on your desktop to your next reply

Thanks
