Unable to activate license on very slow internet

I'm using a throttled hotspot to browse the internet. A lot of programs will fail to connect and say I'm "offline", but I can still browse the internet very slowly. I am fairly sure this is what is causing the issue since other programs tend to have issues with it.

I downloaded Malwarebytes Premium offline installer and got it to install, but it's stuck on the Free version because I can't activate it.

When I try to activate, I get the following message: "Unable to contact license server. Check your network settings or contact your system administrator for help."

Are there any completely-offline installers (no connection to license server required)? Or is there any way I can get this working otherwise?

If you haven’t already done so, please run the Malwarebytes Support Tool and then attach the logs in your next reply:

  1. Download Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Once the file is downloaded, open your Downloads folder/location of the downloaded file

  4. Place a checkmark next to Accept License Agreement and click Next
  5. You will be presented with a page stating, "Get Started!"
  6. Click the Advanced tab on the left column

  7. Click the Gather Logs button

  8. A progress bar will appear and the program will proceed with getting logs from your computer

  9. Upon completion, a file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be found on your Desktop. Click OK

  10. Please attach the file in your next reply. Before submitting your reply, be sure to enable "Notify me of replies" like so:

Unfortunately there is no way to activate your license offline that I am aware of as it requires checkin with the servers in order to validate and send the activation key to the software.  You could try an alternate method of perhaps booting into Safe Mode with Networking to see if you are then able to activate, however if it still isn't able to secure a connection to the licensing servers then it will still fail.

With that said, there is a possibility that something else on your system is hindering and/or blocking Malwarebytes from connecting, so if you are able with your current connection, please download and run the Malwarebytes Support Tool so that we may investigate and see what possible options you might have and what the possibilities are:

  1. Download and run the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Accept the EULA and click Advanced tab on the left (not Start Repair)
  3. Click the Gather Logs button, and once it completes, attach the zip file it creates on your desktop to your next reply

Hi Vegeto079,

Read my post regarding the slow internet.  The symptom you described sounds like what I saw at my client's office.  Just looking at the Settings|Account of the fully activated installation of MB 4.0.4 gave the "Unable to contact license server".  I ended up downloading & installing the offline copy of MB 3.8.3 thanks to Porthos post.

There may be a way such as tethering to a smart phone or some other alternate means of connecting, or even wired if available, however it is unfortunately very likely that the issue will recur if connectivity for Malwarebytes remains limited as it will fail validation checks and end up reverting to free mode.  Unfortunately we may just be stuck by the limitations of the consumer version.  I do not know if any of Malwarebytes' business products offer any way around this (though I would think so since I believe individual protected endpoints are able to continue functioning by simply checking in with the local admin server/Management Console installed on a server on the local network).  Of course if you do not need one of the business versions then that doesn't help your situation.
