BSOD caused by MWAC.sys in 4.0.4.49

Recommended Posts

I keep getting a BSOD after clean installing Windows 10.  This has happened three times now (twice yesterday, then I reset Win 10 again) and then happened again.  Running MWB Premium and BSOD message is DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (mwac.sys)

I thought from reading through the forums that this was supposedly fixed back in 2018.  Also attaching dump file.

Greetings,

A few users have reported this issue recently and the Developers are currently working on a fix.  You can refer to the following threads for additional details:

https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/255029-crash-everynight-caused-by-mwacsys-driver/

https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/255466-mwacsys-bsod/

https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/255552-mwacsys-bsod-win-10-1903/

The last I heard, a staff member said that the Developers were tracking down the cause and planned to have the fix out in the next release, which will hopefully be soon.

As long as you are running Malwarebytes Browser Guard in your web browser, you're definitely better off with version 4 with Web Protection disabled.  Malwarebytes Browser Guard works with Chrome and other Chromium based browsers (such as SRWare Iron, Vivaldi, and Microsoft's new Chromium based Edge browser) as well as Mozilla Firefox and can be downloaded Malwarebytes Browser Guard.  It works with or without Web Protection active and should keep you safe from malicious sites, at least through your browser, which is by far where the greatest risk is found when it comes to malicious sites.

I have the same issue and for whatever reason, running the newest JRiver Media Center 26 seems to trigger it. I also ran VinylStudio today and got the mwac.sys irq less than equal BSOD. I have attached the zip file from the process that you detailed above.

Turn off Web protection until the fix is released.

Hi,  Anyone else got this problem recently again?  Also covered here: https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/263562-bsod-caused-by-mwacsys-and-maybe-ivacy-vpn/ and here: https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/262676-bsod-mwacsys-irql-not-less-or-equal/ Exact same situation as discussed in these posts.  I have the latest version.

Can you please collect and upload as an attachment the diagnostic data using our MBST?

  • Download and run the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  • Accept the EULA and click Advanced tab on the left (not Start Repair)
  • Click the Gather Logs button, and once it completes, attach the zip file it creates on your desktop to your next reply

FYI, a new beta was just released which addresses some BSOD issues.  To install it, open Malwarebytes and go to settings by clicking the small gear icon in the upper right, then under the General tab scroll down to Beta updates and enable the option to install beta updates, then scroll back to the top and click the Check for updates button to allow it to download and install the update, then restart the system once it finishes and test to see if the issue is now resolved or not.

It hasn't happened since then but just did again:

On Sat 1/16/2021 3:31:32 PM your computer crashed or a problem was reported
crash dump file: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\011621-59343-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: mwac.sys (0xFFFFF8014CDE7929)
Bugcheck code: 0xD1 (0x8, 0x2, 0x0, 0xFFFFF8014CDE7929)
Error: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
file path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\mwac.sys
product: Malwarebytes Web Protection
company: Malwarebytes
description: Malwarebytes Web Protection
Bug check description: This indicates that a kernel-mode driver attempted to access pageable memory at a process IRQL that was too high.
This bug check belongs to the crash dump test that you have performed with WhoCrashed or other software. It means that a crash dump file was properly written out.
A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: mwac.sys (Malwarebytes Web Protection, Malwarebytes).
Google query: mwac.sys Malwarebytes DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

It's no longer a beta; it's been released so you can update to the new version by launching Malwarebytes and clicking the Check for updates button under the General tab in settings.  Once that's done, restart the system to ensure that the new components are loaded into memory and hopefully that will correct the BSOD issues you've been experiencing, but please let us know if it does not.
