Malwarebytes+Kaspersky on Windows 10 -- adobe and chrome hang

Recommended Posts

Hi.  I am in the process of moving everything from windows 7 to  10 on a new laptop.  With just MalwareBytes  (setup file download 12/19/2019, file version 4.0.0.108) installed, there are no problems.  With just Kaspersky Internet Security (20.0.14.1085(g)) installed there are no problems.  However, when I have both installed, I have problems with the entire system hanging, notably Adobe Reader DC (possibly also Chrome, testing today was just with Adobe, I first noticed the issue several days ago and this was my first opportunity to attempt to isolate the issue).  Here's the basic order of what I've done:

  1. Installed MB (probably already had Adobe installed, don't remember).
  2. A day or two later installed Kaspersky, which complained that MB was incompatible; installed anyway.  Was ok that day.  Next day, Adobe (and possibly Chrome) hung.  Even with nothing open in Adobe.  Walked away until I had a better mindset.  🙄
  3. Uninstalled Kaspersky.  (probably restarted computer) Adobe worked again.
  4. Uninstalled MB   Restarted.  Adobe worked fine.
  5. Reinstalled just Kaspersky.  Adobe worked fine.  Reinstalled MB.
  6. Uninstalled MB.  Uninstalled Adobe.  Reinstalled Adobe.  works fine.(probably restarted once or twice in the process)
  7. Added exclusions for the two folders listed in https://support.malwarebytes.com/docs/DOC-1123
  8. Installed MB. Adobe starts hanging again after 5-10 minutes.
  9. Quit MB.  Service is still running.  Adobe still hangs.  Tried to start MB, and got an error "Unable to start", "Unable to connect the Service".  Verified that Services was still running.  Tried to stop it to see if that would fix the issue.  It was set to "stopping" but it never got to "stopped".   Uninstalled MB and restarted.

Note that I've tried installing MB first and KIS first.  Doesn't make a difference.  log from Support tool also attached (although MB was installed when it was run).

Looking forward to getting these things playing happily together again (I have had them play nicely for years, just recently started having issues...)

Many thanks in advance!

j

Greetings,

There are currently known compatibility issues with the latest versions of Kaspersky and Malwarebytes Premium, in particular the Ransomware Protection component in Malwarebytes.  You may refer to the information in this topic for further details and known workarounds.

I hope this helps and if there is anything else we might assist you with please let us know.

Thanks

No problem, I do know that Malwarebytes' Developers are looking into the issue and I also heard that Malwarebytes has reached out to Kaspersky Labs to seek a solution, and I know from past experience (having been Product Manager for Malwarebytes previously) that Kaspersky Labs is generally willing to work to resolve compatibility issues as there have been a few similar situations in the past where an update rendered the two applications incompatible and Kaspersky Labs' developers corrected the issues so I have a fair amount of confidence that things will go similarly this time, it is likely simply a matter of time.  I do know that things have improved with the latest patch issued by Kaspersky, though it did not fully resolve the issue, it did allow for additional workarounds to enable the two applications to work together in real-time.  Details on that are also in the thread I linked.

There's no need to close the thread, however I can request that one of the forum Admins do so if you would prefer, just let me know.

Malwarebytes Components Update: 4.1.0.56 version 1.0.854 addresses Certain Ransomware protection incompatibilities with Kaspersky

This release includes, along with other things, the fix for Kaspersky, iTunes and Photoshop

If your PC is already on Version 4  ( regular or beta) you will be updated to it automatically as long as automatic updates are enabled. If you have temporarily disabled them then please enable them to allow this update.

The original Kaspersky conflict issue was due to a change made by Kaspersky on their Antivirus 20.0.14.1085(patch E) programs. As their change was causing issues for our users we took it upon ourselves to work on developing a workaround for this conflict.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 20 version 20.0.14.1085 was released on July 24, 2019
Patch E for Kaspersky Anti-Virus version 20.0.14.1085 was released on October 23, 2019 which is when the issue was first reported to us.
Patch I for Kaspersky Anti-Virus version 20.0.14.1085 was released on February 18, 2020 and is the latest at the time of this posting on 2020-03-19

Please note that although our update works around this issue, at any time in the future another update from Kaspersky could once again potentially create another conflict. This applies to most other security software as well since we do not have control over what other security program changes other vendors make. On Windows 10 the built-in Microsoft Windows Defender has consistently worked pretty well alongside Malwarebytes when enabled for quite a while now for those that have chosen to use it.
