Issues with Kaspersky and MBAM

Recommended Posts

Reporting in just to add credence to the problems reported by others.  Apparently a systemic problem with 4.0.4.49.  I started having similar problems with browsers, extremely slow loading programs, etc. also a day after installing the Malwarebytes update.  I normally suspect Malwarebytes anymore when I have sudden/strange computer problems so exercised the MB "quit" option and the problems went away.  Have used the MB support tool twice to clean and reinstall 4.0.4.49 which seems to work for a little while only.  Malwarebytes then also becomes unable to connect to it's server for updates (which REALLY delays scans!) and also is unable to restart from the icon/link on my desktop after I have to kill it in order to operate my computer.  I have to do a Windows reboot since my network connection is broken when I quit MB during an attempted scan, by the way.  Running Windows 10 with all updates and Kaspersky which doesn't like Malwarebytes when it/Kaspersky is being installed, but has cohabited on my computer pretty well with MB over the years.  I've stopped using MB and will wait for another version of the program since I'm a user, not a development lab or Beta site.  Thanks..................Jim

Greetings,

There is a known issue with Kaspersky's latest release/patch and that is what is causing the issues you are experiencing.  The workaround is to disable the Ransomware Protection component in Malwarebytes until the issue is resolved.  It is currently being worked on and Malwarebytes' Developers are in contact with Kaspersky Labs to seek a solution.

Certainly is a problem with the Ransomware module, but you'd better dig a little deeper.  I had very severe problems with Firefox, Thunderbird, CCleaner and other programs which I resolved by shutting off the Ransomware module on November 7th and it's still off. (I keep a detailed log, engineer thing I guess).  Some text from my log is pasted below.  The recent problem with 4.0.4.49 is different for sure.   Jim

Nov 7, 2019:  TURNED OFF RANSOMWARE REAL-TIME PROTECTION on Malwarebytes.  Was the root of a lot of problems with various programs (Firefox, Thunderbird, Win500, and CCleaner for sure).  Also turned off notifications in the tray for real-time protection layers being off.   Most programs would start, but only once.  For example, Firefox visible browser would close, but task manager would still show non-visible versions running in the background.  As long as the non-visible instances were active, I couldn't reopen Firefox again.  Similar for other programs.  By the way Chrome browser did not exhibit this problem with Ransomware module turned on.

The issue first occurred when Kaspersky released patch 'e' for their 2020 line of products and the issue also started impacting Kaspersky 2019 users once patch 'j' for that product line was released, at least according to one member who downgraded to the older build of Kaspersky to try and work around the issue.  It is not specific to Malwarebytes 4.0 as it also impacts Malwarebytes 3.  Currently the only known workarounds are to disable Ransomware Protection as I mentioned or to remove either Kaspersky or Malwarebytes or to install a pre-patch 'e' build of Kaspersky 2020 and not allow it to install the patch (assuming that is possible).

Pardon my abruptness, Exile360.  I really appreciate your prompt response and the effort that your developers are already exerting.  It could very well be another conflict with Kaspersky Internet Security.  I'll provide a little more log text in case it might be useful.  First saw the Ransomware-related issue in late October:

October 25-26, 2019

Serious problems with Firefox, Thunderbird, Pale Moon and Everything (search of computer).  Spent hours working on the Firefox/Thunderbird issues which relate to not being able to close them and then reopen them without a reboot.  Problems at times are worse than that though.  ALL FOUR OF THOSE PROGRAMS RUN PERFECTLY IN WINDOWS SAFE MODE!!!!

Ended up isolating the problem to the Ransomware module by whitelisting WIN500 (a police band scanner control program) so that Ransomware module ignores it.  Then shut off the entire Ransomware module after which the other major program ran just fine..

Thanks again.  I had not seen your post about the Kaspersky "e" patch when I replied above with the additional log information, but I did notice the Ransomware issue with the older version of Malwarebytes (not sure about what version of KIS at the time, of course).  Anyway, it's all making more sense to me after your explanation.  I'll look forward to a revision in the future from either MB or KIS (or both, perhaps!).  I really feel good about my protection level running both of these programs or I wouldn't be so persistent.

Yes, the issues you describe all fit with the Kaspersky conflict/issue and match the findings of others impacted by it.  Programs such as browsers, email clients and others failing to launch and/or hanging, overall system sluggishness/unresponsiveness etc. so that's definitely what you're experiencing and the timing fits as well because that is around the time that Kaspersky released the affected patch.

Thank you for the details and your continued patience.  Please keep an eye on the forums here for any updates from the Malwarebytes staff as they will be posting to inform everyone once the issue has been corrected.

Thanks

Hello,

For Black Friday, Kaspersky offered me a sweet deal on its basic antivirus program. I am a previous Kaspersky customer, and their older antivirus worked well with Malwarebytes. However, when I went to install this new version last night, it would not install without me removing Malwarebytes from my computer first. I shut down the install. My question, if I remove Malwarebytes Premium, which I renewed last June, how do I re-install it as I don't recall receiving an activation key for it?

Thanks.

Please start by creating an account at My.Malwarebytes.com if you haven't done so already, if possible using the same email address you used when you originally purchased your license.  You will find instructions on how to do so in this support article. You should be able to retrieve your key.

Keep in kind there are issues running them together now.

The latest version of Kaspersky is known to have problems with Malwarebytes.  Please try temporarily disabling Kaspersky and then installing Malwarebytes, and if that works, then once Malwarebytes is installed, disable the Ransomware Protection component in Malwarebytes as it is known to cause system performance issues when used alongside Kaspersky's latest version.  You can disable Ransomware Protection by right-clicking on the Malwarebytes tray icon near your system clock and clicking where it says Ransomware Protection: On and then click Yes if prompted by User Account Control.

Yes, I recall reading that up the thread here or in the other Kaspersky thread. I'll try that, although it was ransomware protection that I specifically purchased Malwarebytes for. I have contacted Kaspersky online chat and discussed the issue with them. If all else fails, I'll return the K. - antivirus, which I would rather not do.

The ransomware component is more of a reactive protection. The rest of the components do more to protect you from ransomware that the ransomware component does.

I'll update if things change, but as of this afternoon I've downloaded and installed Malwarebytes version 3.8.3.  This after cleaning the original MB 4.0 version with the MB Support Tool.  Disabled the Ransomware module (and the notification in the tray indicating that it is off).  Also disabled automatic download and updating of MB of course.

All is working well with Kaspersky Internet Security also running.  I have the paid versions of KIS and MB (lifetime license).  Basically back to where I was prior to upgrading to MB 4.0.4.49.  I can live with this.

I'll continue to monitor both MB and KIS forums for a long-term solution and hope for the best.  Thanks for all of the information.   .................Jim
